I played paper and pencil RPGs in the 1980s. The standard of RP was a lot higher than today objectively, we used to try a lot harder with our imaginations, because we had to. I still play Morrowind, because it feels the most like a proper RPG. Subsequent iterations were dumbed down and simplified for older console players, the so-called casual gamers.
That's why I'm hoping that Todd goes back to making it more like rpgs, but I'm not holding out that much hope from how he dumbs it down every time.
Pretty sure that bookseller in Balmora has the Chronicles of N'whatitsname

I definitely understand their reasoning for dumbing down the games as they want to bring in newer players, both those who are casual gamers and those who are fans of some of the modern takes on RPGs or the various subgenres but who might not be as open to playing something like bg1, neverwinter nights, or even the more recent pathfinder with more complex mechanics then they are used to. Not that Morrowind is as complex as some of those but some of the relevant older mechanics like THAC0 for Daggerfall for example or morrowinds lack of certain modern "quality of life" features can come off as intimidating and off-putting to those who arent use to those types of games.
Of course, Bethesda will want to just make the game appealing to everyone because money. But I would like to believe part of it is IP preservation as well. Appealing to only the hardcore fanbase of Daggerfall and Morrowind could potentially hurt the appeal of a newer game, so if the newer games dont sell that well then theres the potential that Bethesda as a company would not see any reason to produce another Elder Scrolls game. Although it could be argued that the name "elder scrolls" has evolved to a point that even if they did go back to the games being more like Daggerfall or Morrowind, the game would likely do fine.
I didnt grow up on pen and paper RPGs and didnt really start playing some of the older RPGs until my early 20's and am still slowly catching up to some of them even today nearly a decade later. I've come to appreciate various aspects of newer and older RPGs and just appreciate the genre as a whole which i think is why I've been more accepting of both the complex, "clunky", older mechanics of certain games as well as some of the simplification and quality of life of newer games in the genre. Skyrim is one of my favorite games but I will 100% agree that I do wish it was more like Morrowind. I will also 100% always stand by the agreement that Skyrim's magic system is terrible without mods. But I think my love for the lore and the world has made me overlook that.
These VODs haven't caught up to my progress on the live streams, but I have currently completed the entirety of Morrowind's base game and both DLCs and I can say with certainty that this game is currently my favorite Elder Scrolls game of all time. And I do really hope that Bethesda does start to bring back some of the things that made Morrowind and Daggerfall great, kind of like with what Wayward Realms is planning to do. But even if they continue with the simplified approach, I know I'll still end up enjoying the game due to just me wanting to explore a new world set in the Elder Scrolls universe.
Apologies for the wall of text 😅I can get pretty passionate when talking about these games
