After many requests from my lovely American students, I finally decided to open a youtube channel entirely dedicated to people from the U.S. that LOVE Italian and Italy.
The Natural Method I suggest you follow is based on the concept of MASSIVE LISTENING to INTERESTING and COMPREHENSIBLE Italian.
It worked for hundreds of thousands of people I helped since 2013.
By doing that using the advantages of being an adult, you will naturally absorb the Italian language so that when you'll try to speak words will come out without you stressing about grammar rules, verb conjugations, articles, etc...
You'll know the right way because you followed the right principles that allow your brain to learn Italian.
It will be just a matter of time before Italian will be yours!

    Some tips to learn Italian:
    30+ Minutes of Duolingo Daily
    20+ Minutes of these videos
Write some texts in Italian (with the help of google translate) and read them while speaking.
Once you get the base of Latin, your learnings are going to be easier then they were at the beginning.
Good luck and have fun ;)
(Im brazilian and went from English to Italian)

Alberto, un gruppo di noi che studia italiano a Washington, DC, in una meravigliosa scuola chiamata Casa Italiana, adora i tuoi video. Più di una volta abbiamo parlato di te in classe. Scopri Casa Italiana. È un tesoro. Avrei voluto aver iniziato a studiare e imparare la tua bellissima lingua anni fa. Ti auguro un successo continuo. Sei un ottimo insegnante!

As strange as it sounds, I would also recommend focusing on Alberto's mouth movement while he speaks. This is something the brain does subconsciously to help you learn to speak. Studies have shown that babies actually lip-read first when learning how to talk. Grazie mille.

It definitely resembles Spanish! After spending the last year or so studying Spanish (I'm probably lower advanced level at this point), I found that I can understand 60% of the spoken Italian, and 90% of the Italian subtitles just from the similarity. This is about where I was after 50-100 hours of comprehensible input for Spanish, yet here I am as a raw beginner to Italian, with less than an hour of listening.
I wonder how it would be for a native Spanish speaker, who's learning Italian as their second language. While they would certainly have the advantage of a very similar language, one of the skills you pick up learning any foreign language is the ability to parse the sounds of a unfamiliar language and hear words and syllables rather than a mangled mess of sounds, and this skill transfers between languages, at least to some extent.
I'd say that for spoken language, Italian and Latin are the closest languages to Spanish. Portuguese is closer in writing, almost like "Spanish with very poor spelling", but the pronounciation is more distant.

This is amazing! I honestly thought that I wouldn't understand anything. Probably my native Portuguese helps a lot. I have been studying the Natural approach for a while and I was looking for content in Italian, so thank you for this! If I may, I also have a question for you: Why do you think that the translation to the native language (not mine in this case but anyways hahah) is effective and at what point of the language acquisition process should they be left aside? Thanks a lot! :)

    • @italianforamericans2416
      @italianforamericans2416  3 года назад +2

Ciao Raissa, I'm happy you found the video helpful. The translation is very useful at the beginning of the process because you don't need a dictionary, you have everything ready. It's handy. And you need it to build your vocabulary, to understand what's been said. The translations should be left aside when you feel you can understand a lot without needing to look at the translations. =) When you feel ready, we are waiting for you on our other channel: ruclips.net/user/AlbertoITALIANOAUTOMATICO
