Everybody always says get out of the water if you see any of these signs of riptide. But, nobody ever adds. If it's already to late and you're being dragged out, don't swim against it. Swim parallel to the beach until you're out of the current. You'll wear yourself out trying to swim against it.
Happens on lake Michigan. I'm in SW Michigan. We even have signs everywhere, teaching about the rip tides. The tourists never listen. And the Chicago side rarely has RIP tides, so they think they're safe on this side. there's even an app for your phone that alerts rip currents. Thanks for listening. Have a good night.
Another thing to know: not all riptides work like that where you can swim parallel, some actually move with the beach and then circle out and into the ocean, and there is also the added factor of tide, some tides also work along the coastline and can work against your attempted escape, so in some cases it’s a 50/50 that this will work.
I saw the bodies of a father & daughter get dragged out of a beach cause they didn't listen to the signs and they got dragged out to sea and drowned likely from exhaustion. I think they were dead by the time the wife even realized they were missing....scary stuff. I got caught in a riptide along with a couple others at a beach when I was 9 yrs old, I just floated on my back while crying until folks on jetskis came along. One of them was probably a family member of another, because he slapped him so hard I'll never forget the echo it made :P
@@GeorgeTooCur1ous He was angry/afraid because many many kids die at that beach every year (this is in Morocco, people are a bit more handsy, or at least were). I saw a video about this once and a while ago I saw this phenomenon in Lake Michigan. I never thought I would see it in person since I thought you could only see it along the ocean shore.
Waves generally do not indicate the direction of current flow. They follow the direction of the wind or disturbance that created them in the first place. So if you see wavefronts crossing at 90 degrees, or at any other angle... it most likely means that two boats recently passed you.
That's dead right. That's not the explanation in the photos, (those wave sequences probably originate from distant storms in two mutually perpendicular directions, or more likely one set of very clean swells from such a storm refracted by passing two different bottom contours, one off to each side or by passing an island and refracting around the far side)... but in NO case of wave trains at or close to 90 degrees is it about currents (contrary to what the dude narrating the clip says, he clearly knows sweet FA about the topic)
You can get individual pyramid shaped waves, or a few in close proximity, as a result of currents, but not regular, sharply defined, identical instances happening over large areas as in the clip.
I live in Deleware and downstate on the coast this is literally all the waves look like. It’s all of our common rivers and large sources of water flowing into the bay and crossing over to the Atlantic 😘

I saw square waves off the coast of Morocco, it's a matter of currents running into each other. Nothing to be afraid of.
"If you see square waves, play checkers in them."
Plus they’re generally near and transporting you to a current that can drag you more than 50m from the coast
They're so much fun to swim in though haha. If you're a really good swimmer and arent near a rocky coast, it can be fine. Just be careful af
