They’ll tell you that you can’t print 40x50 inches from an RZ67 negative. They’ll say it’s just too big a blow-up for 6x7 film. They’ll say I’m crazy for pushing the Epson V750 that hard. Yeah, they’ll say that.
…they might be right. But what the hell? Life is short, printing is fun, and the opportunity arose. So let’s blow some stuff up! Negatives and prints, I mean! Of course. That’s what I’m talking about. Not that the NSA is listening to this or anything but, you know, in the event they were listening I just want to be crystal clear that I’m talking about blowing up images, as in making them larger. That’s all.
Haha. Man… Is it hot in here?
So here’s a video about me making a 40x50-inch pigment print on Hahnemuhle Photo Rag paper from that “Joshua Trees in Fog” photo I took awhile back in Joshua Tree National Park using my Mamiya RZ67. Getting a good print from such a moderately sized negative was difficult, but transporting this big buxom beauty proved to be the bigger challenge. It had a 450+ mile journey home. And hey I’m even going to do what everyone always asks me to do in these videos: share the costs involved with making such a big framed print. As you can imagine, it ain’t cheap.

Maybe you could consider offering your friend an engraved plate, museum style, with the info for the photograph to place it below the frame. I would even consider gluing a dummy plug in the back so you can use the plate to hide the electric outlet under the frame.

Back a lifetime ago I took a college course in archival photography mounting and framing. For the style of framing you used we were taught that the photograph was to be signed, dated and numbered on the back of the print. It was standard procedure to use an archival ink like India ink for permanence. A small, tasteful, archival info card was then attached to the mat in the lower right corner. According to my instructor, these touches were what elevated a print to the level of fine art. In her mind how you treated the print when it came to displaying it was equally important to the act of creating the piece. You created a piece of art for your friend that was part of a limited edition and as such you’ve done a great job. In your next go around you’ll know exactly how to achieve the results you’re looking for. Great image and great lesson for all. Keep up the great work Nicky C. 😀👍

I appreciate the transparency about the expenses. I work at a printing and framing studio that does a lot of large scale fine art work and it’s always slightly horrifying how much people can spend.
What kind of glazing did you go with? I thought you hadn’t gone with any until you mentioned the plexi not getting damaged by the drive.
Also impressed that the Epson file held up so well and you didn’t need to spring for a drum scan. You’d be shocked at how many people will try and blow tiny JPEGS up to the size of a wall and don’t seem to mind the results.

When I was a student, I worked part time in a photo lab. We did large format ink prints (up to 60x90 cm). I had worked on an image for very long time from a black and white negative (Tri-X, it looked awesome). The printing took forever, but it was finally done. I took it out to check if the print came out OK. I put on gloves, and carried it carefully to the inspection bench, and leaned over to see if there was any printing marks or weird faults. Just as I leaned over, a small drop fell out of my nose and onto the print. My first instinct was to brush it off as quickly as I could. It did not go well...
Fast forwards through a lot of swear words and despair, my boss just laughed at me while I was prepping the large format printer again, and kicking my self in the back

Great. Way to go Nick!!! I’m so behind. Never print …. This is inspiring. Hoping to take some pics with my GFX 100S that deserve this kind of effort.
I use the GFX with Pentax 645 lenses most for tilt shift but find the native GF are better.
I have a canon 50mm TSE on order and am hoping it will be better than the Pentax 645 45-85mm.
I think your approach using various film cameras like the Shen Hao 617 is better but beyond my personal capabilities.
Bottom line: Bravo!!! Great job. A change in scale is a change in kind, as we say in the architecture biz. And your huge print transforms the image from a very good one into a great one. Clearly it’s ART! Congrats to photographer and client!!!

In my experience I found having better results scanning at the maximum optical resolution of the V800 (2400dpi) and then the same as you do more or less. If you have extra budget a bulletproof way is to scan on Imacon for a 3200 dpi scan (25in wide print), or having a drumscan made at 6400dpi (for a 40in wide print), from a medium format neg of course.

There's more than enough optical resolution stored in that negative for a picture of that size. The easiest way to extract it these days would be in camera composite with a Sony a7r4 and a macro lens. That would yield a raw file well in excess of 100 megapixels, of real actual data, assuming the lens was sharp enough to record it on the film. I know you are not fond of camera scanning Nick, but I expect with black and white the Canon colors would not be an issue :-) That would make a really entertaining RUclips episode, renting an a7r4 and showing exactly how much resolution you can get out of it. I got 80mpx from Adox CMS 20 II in 135 using an a7r4 as the scanning camera and a Sigma 105mm Art as the taking lens. That is as measured using a USAF resolution chart. I still use my Epson, and my PIE XA Super, but when you need big prints from small negatives, nothing compares to camera scanning.

Your videos with prints and associated framing are always so interesting to watch. But you could certainly take a picture of the phone book, print it, and frame it in a giant frame and we would still get a great sense of art. You are simply so good!
One last rather comical thing I noticed. I follow a guy on RUclips named Martin Miller (musician) and he looks so very similar to you in appearance in some videos that it could be assumed to be your brother. Looking forward to your next video Nick!

Holy smokes, what an interesting story. A lot went into making that piece and delivering it was a whole other beast lol. Great stuff! Only thing missing was those sweet sweet lo-fi hip hop beats 🤣🙌🏾

Here I thought it was a 40x50 enlargement print. You'd get better detail that way than through a scan, in my humble opinion. Cool shot and nice process regardless!

Love your video! Great story and yes, making BIG prints is awesome!
I run a print lab myself and did a large format print of a 6x6 epson v850 scan, sized 1x1 meter. The picture was made with Hasselblad camera and optics. I was limited by the lens resolution, not by film and scanner. The artwork sits now on my wall, and from a regular viewing distance, you will not see any compromise.
As a print operator, I prefer customers to not enlarge their files, as it makes it very difficult to judge on quality-size. For images that size, you can go as low as 100 - 120ppi. The RIP software will scale the file perfectly. Once the image is enlarged in software, it is almost impossible to advise on maximum dimensions. But, if you want full control on grain structure and the level of sharpening … hey, there is no alternative ;-) Great job documenting your steps.
What Fineart photo Rag paper was used to print on? Hahnemuhle?
