This was such an interesting rabbit hole, i recently learned of this too. This is one of the cases where I think the MCU made a better character to be honest. She's a mary sue in the comics.
Punisher was only immune to the Penance Stare because Deadpool purified him using an Angelic Feather. Without that protection, when he had the Stare used on him again, it didn't end so well.

The reason he did it was to save the many millions of other inhabitants on said moon. Edit: just read a more full context of the comic. It was starlord *and* a sentient spaceship called "ship" esentially kamikazied itself and starlord on the moon, killing all 350000 of the people on it. which basically killed the fallen one and saved the moon's planet which had a few million. Still a pretty crazy feat. Love starlord
