I bought a second hand, genuine Rega 3, 12mm glass platter for £47 on fleabay. Wouldn’t touch a badly made aftermarket acrylic platter with a barge pole. There’s a reason why Rega uses glass and not acrylic.
The standard P1 platter is moulded resin. The glass platter is machined and, because of its greater weight, has the advantage of the flywheel effect in improving speed stability. I'm sure the acrylic platters are machined too, but from your testimony I assume it is not machined quite as competently, and of course the flywheel effect would be much less.
I’ve got an RP1 and I’m very impressed with it using a bog standard ATN91 stylus. No other changes apart from the latest Rega upgraded belt. How much more does the Planar 3 bring in your opinion? I suspect it’s the cartridge that makes most of the difference.
Hi, i have an old P3/24 and I think this setup is definitely better than my P1 when i compare them side-by-side but then again people don't do that on the whole! Is it several hundred pounds better? That probably depends lots of things like disposable income etc. - but if you are pleased with your P1 you can happily stick with it I reckon

I believe the Planar 1 bearing isn't as sturdy as the Planar 2 or 3, so I'd be wary of using a heavier platter on it.
