That is a great bull. Congrats on staying calm. Counting the points is easier when the bull is down. The advice I gave my son is especially true without snow. Poke a hole in the elk and shoot until it drops. His first bull came out of a deep hole above no man's land. It got 4 holes in the neck and died on the ridge top. My Dad killed a big 6 in 1980. I heard 10 shots at dusk and we found 9 bullet holes in him when we quartered it. It was a big bull that weighed over 600 lbs quartered. It did not fit the over size meat sacks Mom made. I remember the neck alone weighed 50 lbs and the hide weighed 82 lbs. I carried the hide in my arms after running out of pack boards. Dad wasn't one to leave a 10 dollar hide on the mountain... I miss those days.
Beautiful bull, way to stay after it and not giving up and thanks for not saying I smoked him after you made three solid shots, that's the best way to show respect for that animal.
Great hunt and great job on that bull. This is a great video because it’s a great story and a positive for hunting. Wounded bull, 6 hours tracking and trying to find it, verifying life, finding again and sealing the deal. What a major relief-such a sweet thing to witness their ability to survive and know he didn’t suffer. Doesn’t always go like that, but this shows that doing it the right way sometimes pays off big time. Hat is off.
Wow! If it's the tag I'm thinking of, the draw odds were like 1% last year? I can't think of a more deserving person than you to be successful! Well done Schneiders!
Awesome job Tom! That is an amazing bull! I'm so glad you stayed with him. We have seen that before using copper bullets. I can't believe how big that guy is! Two thumbs up from me 👍👍

Congrats Tom! That's a beautiful bull. I love them dark horns. I also like calling them close. I'm sure you've heard of Paul Medel, the elk nut. If you don't have his app, it is well worth the $10. Why would you want them to know you’re there with calls rifle in hand ? there’s a time and place for calls this wasn’t one of them. That’s the thing who cares if it’s with a bow 30 yards or a rifle 4-500 yards dead is dead when people romanticize the hunt they usually go home empty handed you have to try each opportunity for what it is and not force situations because you envision them to go a certain way elk don’t usually read the script to the perfect hunting story. My last bulls have been 150 yards rifle 2017 6x6, 30 yards bow and arrow called him in with my 8 and 11 year old 2018 5x5, 220 yards rifle 2019 5x5, 539 yards 2021 7x6. I’m just grateful to see the opportunity when it’s there sometimes it’s spot and stalk sometimes it’s crazy in your face bugle battles adapt and overcome these guys aren’t amateurs that’s what you must do to seal the deal year after year great shooting boys 💪🏼
Tom specifically mentioned when he was trying to sneak in, one of the cows busted him and he could not see or get close enough to the herd bull. Even though he had a rifle in hand. There are calls you can use to call her back if she did not see you or didn't quite know what you were, and calls you can use to let the rest of the herd know why she is running. This can prevent the rest of the herd from running, and convince the herd bull that he needs to come over and investigate or defend. Great hunters never want to stop learning. The Stuck in the Rut crew seems to fit that bill. So if there is a way to kill a bull the first time you are in there, rather than making multiple trips back, I think Tom would be interested in that kind of knowledge. If not, that's okay. Doesn't sound like it's your cup of tea. No problem. I would rather be able to use calling and 80% of the time get the elk, rather than 80% of the time the elk got away. I'm sure we all have stories of The One That Got Away, but what if there was something you could say to that elk to bring him back or kill him before he ran away? I think it's worth a $10 app :-) Or if you are cheap, Go download some podcasts where Paul was a guest on. Great info for free

Great story! Way to stick with him. A couple years ago I was in on a rifle elk kill with a buddy. We found an old wound on him and dug a broadhead with 14” of arrow out of his backstrap. It was healed pretty clean, no sign of infection, just still draining out his side. I showed photos around and one of my other friends recognized the arrow. He’d shot and lost the bull 2 years earlier. Said he’d caught up and put another one in his neck but we found no evidence of that. That bull was happily bugling with his herd as well when we got him. Unreal what they can recover from.
A friend of the family shot a 6x6 in Colorado back in the early 80s. When they skinned the head there was a broadhead stuck in the skull right between the antlers!
