This video was shot using a Canon 5D Mark III, a Canon 60D, and a Blackmagic Pocket Camera. Audio recorded using a Fishman pickup, a Behringer amp and a Zoom H4n. Looping was done with a Boss RC-50.

I had learnt how to play the violin in the past before and I currently play the piano now, but I had recently been contemplating whether to learn how to play cello or whether I should just do violin again because I had some experience with the violin. Time is one of my favourite songs, and this video you made has made me make up my mind, I want to learn to play the cello.

I think he accomplishes the gritty sound by adding more pressure to the string and moving slowly. The lower strings naturally have the duller sound as well.
Octavia Harmony The lower strings do not have a naturally 'duller' sound. The only thing that produces a dull sound is a lack of vibrato and a bad combination of bow pressure and bow speed.
Andre Gaskins Now that I listen to it again, I might have to agree. I don't know if he's trying to go for loud but "calm", but I feel like a faster bow would keep the strings from sounding sticky. I'm not sure how to describe it, but I assume you know what I mean when you press too hard and bow too slowly. What I meant by duller is that it's easier to produce such a result using the lower strings than the higher ones. Sorry if it sounded like I was saying that the tonal qualities of the strings vary by string - that just wouldn't make sense.
Another factor I might add may be the device he's using to pick up the sound not being the best for getting the most clear results. Perhaps if he used a boom mic in front of the f-holes, he might cut down on the buzzing.
Octavia Harmony Well - the tonal qualities actually do vary by string - the lower strings have a more robust quality, while the higher strings can be a little brighter and more brilliant. The quality naturally varies from instrument to instrument, and there are many other factors, such as the quality of the strings, the setup of the instrument itself (bridge and soundpost placement, etc...). You are correct that there would be less buzzing from a boom mic vs. a pickup mic. However, the quality of the sound is ultimately the responsibility of the musician producing those sounds. Yes, the buzzing is more present, due to the pickup mic - but it can also be tempered with less bow pressure and more vibrato. The vibrato is a distinguishing quality from musician to musician. Regarding bow pressure (in general), the lower strings do, in fact, need a slower speed (and more pressure) in order to maintain a consistent tone. Move the bow too fast or with not enough pressure, and the sound will be very thin, wispy, unfocused - generally undesirable. But it is also possible to overdo it, with the pressure (and slow bow speed) - too much and the string will definitely crunch. It's one of those things that every string player has to constantly search for. :-)
I know it's 2 years later but Mhm. That sound make me cringe and not enjoy it at all. Am a cello player ... and he almost made the notes into staccato instead of one smooth flow. I think he has too much rosin on there too. I've heard a similar effect on my instrument and it wouldn't go away if i changed my bowing - wiping and re-applying rosin fixed it right away.
