Till Lindemann and guitarist Richard Kruspe have both confirmed the song to be a reference to their unhappy childhood relationships with their own mothers. I get goose bumps every time I hear this song.
Thank you for reacting to my favorite Rammstein song! I take the song meaning to be either a clone, test tube baby, or bioengineered in some way. And he is not happy about it lol. I don't know why but I tear up every time I hear this one.
By the way, I went 20+ years listening to Rammstein without ever knowing the lyrics to their songs. The meaning is secondary to the music in my opinion.
I think it's about cloning. The sad ballad of a genetic experiment which is concious of it's situation. Full of hate, sadness and frustration. Great song ! ❤
Do you know the clone Dolly the sheep? The song came out relatively soon with this sheep. The song deals with the possibility of one day being able to clone humans and what psychological effects this can have on such a clone. Conceived from a test tube. Grown in the laboratory without parents.
I think it's more metaphoric, it's about women who became pregnant by accident ("gezeugt in Hast" = "Conceived in haste", something relatively common in the years when the band members were born) and who resented the children for being born. It's about neglect and abuse. And despite the abuse, there is a visceral connection, she's the mother after all, and he wants to remove the mole ("Muttermal" = "mother sign") with the kiss of a knife even if he has to bleed to death. Very poetic and beautiful song.

For us "older" ones take a Part from Zager & Evans - In the year 2525: In the year 6565 You won't need no husband, won't need no wife You'll pick your son, pick your daughter too from the bottom of a long glass tube. So Till is singing about an In Vitro born child (wich hast no navel on his belly)... In my mind he has sworn revenge to those people, who has taken away from him the feelings of having a real mother. Greetings from Germany
I always have to think of the movie topgun on the end of this song 🤔 the church didn't like this song,so Rammstein answer was the song "halleluja".you need to see the live version of highfield
Even for us Germans, Lindemann's lyrics are not always easy to understand. But he never explains them either. Here he probably had the feelings of a cloned person in mind. But it could also be about a child abandoned by its mother. But it has nothing to do with his own mother. He has a loving relationship with her and she was even in the audience at the concert in Madison Square Garden.
Definitely one of Rammstein's most intense songs. In vitro fertilization or cloning are the keywords. There's an interpretation that says this song - composed by lead guitarist Richard - is about his childhood which was everything but happy and child-orientated. But this might be a rumour.
Stop thinking to hard . Enjoy the music and the story allways comes with a meaning or twist you wont understand off the bat . Till ist a Expert with words and the band never spoils the real meanings so each fan can have a personal feeling to it . Rammstein said it way back in the days . Thats why we have reason to talk about it and go deeper when we hear Rammstein. Peace from germany to all of you out there
It is about a lab conceived babies without a mother. A bit Sci-Fi. Inspired by Dolly the sheep. Interesting, after all the hate he finishes with “Give me strength. “
It´s a very sad ballad and the lyrics are so poetic! Wich singer would choose the words: "...wich a knives kiss..."? Only poets would take this words - and Rammstein!
Musically, Mutter - like many other Rammstein ballads - is a monotonous song. It is written in the key of E. It has a very strong melody, contains majestic power chords, and except for the modulation in the middle, it progresses monotonously and ends. When criticizing the songs written by Rammstein in this relatively simple musical form (mostly ballads as I mentioned above), the lyrics become important. When you look at the lyrics and think about them a few times, several different interpretations can be made for this song, as is the case with almost all Rammstein songs. At first glance, the lyrics seem to be written from the mouth of a child who was never born and never existed (which brings to mind abortion) facing its mother. When viewed this way, it seems that many emotions are intertwined; mother's love, some anger, some hatred and a lot of sadness... But with a secondary reading, it becomes more evident that the song reflects the feelings of a child who was "born without a mother from the very beginning" (NOT of a child who did not have a mother because he was killed by abortion.) He is a laboratory-produced (probably cloned) child who does not have an organic mother (and an organic father of course), has something to say for his mother first. From this perspective, the song seems to be about human cloning at a higher level. And it seems to be a reference to the science-fiction novel "Brave New World" written by Aldous Huxley; inevitably bringing to mind the system of creating motherless and fatherless humans. It's like the words of a child born this way and his anger towards his nonexistent mother.. (By the way, this song is quite old, I think it's from 2001, and I read in an article at that time that the idea for the song came from the (actually non-existent) mother-son relationship that the band's guitarist Richard Kruspe, had with his mother during his childhood. The artistic creativity achieved through a fairly common core situation is impressive, isn't it? It's impossible not to tip our hat to Till. He is undoubtedly one of the greatest literary figures of our time.)
the original video of this song was about to have them split, because they were all in vacation and called back to make the video, only Till went... after lots of argueing they started to go to a weekly psychologist session, all together... seems they still do :)
Ti consiglio anche Angst..ma sono tutti pazzeschi..grazie per il tuo apprezzamento..ho visto i Rammstein a Reggio Emilia a luglio..e sto ancora piangendo. Sono meravigliosi😍🤩
In this song, a clone is sung about that was never able to see and love his physical mother and is now seeking revenge. One of the best songs from the album "Mutter" and almost all songs on this album are masterpieces. 🥰🥰🥰Too bad this song was/is played so rarely on the tour only on this (2011) and the 2001 tour 😭.......... Definitely deserved more screentime. A lyrical masterpiece and Till was in top form with this song!!!!!🤟🤟🤟
The song is about a scientifically created child who is fertilized for experimental purposes. A woman has donated her egg cell, which has resulted in a lab-created vulture with neither a name nor a navel. There is a tube in his throat that provides the function of food. The child regrets his life because he is like us, but he does not have what we have had
Thanks for another quick reaction mate! A suggestion. You know how cryptic their songs can be so just enjoy the music. Stop trying so hard to work out what the song is about.
Great Song, but also difficult to understand! I think it's about a Laboratory Experiment, an artificially created Child, maybe artificially created living beings that serve the purpose of Organ Donation. Some of the Lyrics/Metaphors are really hard to decipher and I still don't really understand them! "In her Lungs lives an eel On my forehead a Birthmark Remove it with a Knife's Kiss Even if I have to die from it" But that's just Rammstein, just Till, who often uses Metaphors that are difficult to understand and leave a lot of Room for Interpretation!
My first interpretation was that he's talking about abortion but after second read i think he is talking about an "experimental" child with no human parents
Too bad, because they are the best live band in the world. This was not performed at the Olympics by the way, it was recorded years ago and that huge crowd was there to see them.
The most common interpretation of this song is that they talk about „cloning“. This would make sense … but you never know with Rammstein 😉 great song
Till once said it was for all lost children.
I love that you said "most common interpretation is" and not "the song is about" as most others say.
It is resolved in the video for Adieu. They enter a room with "Mother-22" written on the door.
In this room they meet their clones.
Awesome sound as allways with Rammstein and ofcorce a seriuos lyric.🤘🏼💪🏻❤
This, exactly this performance from Till is phenomenal…What a storyteller ❤
The crescendo in which Till calls for his mother and when tens of thousands of people in the crowd scream "MUTTER" with him still gives me goosebumps.
And the change of key. That raises the song from very good to great.

You have to take into account the end of world war 2 and Germany and how what Germany was doing to their people/Germany being their mother land.
The clue is in the line about not having a navel. It tells everything.
