I lived on Floral Blvd from 1955, my Dad is still there. I was at ALL the drills. To me, it was the best thing in town all summer. To a young kid in the early 60's, having our driveway closed off by the tournament fencing was just the best. I used to come back for visits and look for the remnants of the start lines on Floral Blvd. They were there for a bunch of years until the Village did a better than usual job of repaving. Ahhh, progress. As a sober(?) adult I see why they had to stop eventually due to safety reasons. But while it lasted, it was the center of my summer for years. Good times!!
The Stewart manor team used to practice on our street when I was growing up. We had a Dalmatian at the time who loved to run up and down the block with them.
That is incredable footage. These trucks should be in museums. It's amazing how they converted fire engines into these awesome drag racing machines. And the guys had to jump off while the truck is speeding and then slaming on brakes while these guys are running, throwing a ladder down while one guy is starting to climb. Is this a Long Island thing?
And upstate NY. Used to be on Wide World of Sports, if I remember correctly. I was 4 when this drill took place. I'm sure I was there. They were just old trucks converted, and still are.
OK, my lady is formerly from the FPFD from when she used to live there. Who are these people so I can show her and remind her of people she was with when she was in the department? Yes, she has a bowling pin from the bowling alley that she likes to use to flatten chicken breasts when that place had the gas fire.
