It is like a cultural muhalla of Pakistan. People from all walks of life share the same feelings, love, loss, and waiting for someone, somewhere and hope for union. These feelings are above, nationality, ethnicity, or gender bias. Everyone desires companionship and love. Ali Sethi was the right choice for this song Shae Gul, an amzing addition to the international Coke Studio family. 💚🤍

A Pakistani and a native Urdu speaker here.
There are some things worth mentioning about the song.
    - The song is in two languages: Punjabi (a largely spoken regional language) and Urdu (national language of Pakistan).
    - The song is about heartbreak. English translation interprets it as a stereotypical heartbreak between two lovers but it's so, so much more. Notice how the male singer sings the lyrics with he/him pronouns. In Urdu poetry, these pronouns are used as abstract. This gives so much meaning and perspectives to the song. The heart break could be due to a loved one, a friend, a long awaited opportunity, social pressure, stress and depression, loneliness, family, anything.
    - Then when the Urdu part comes, both singers are singing in a yearning tone. The lyrics like "All I need your love" (similar to that) also implies that they are referring to God that all they need is God to overcome worldly heart breaks.
    - Urdu is a very philosophical language. That's why philosophy is the core of Urdu poetry.
Another important detail is that the song starts and ends with the old lady. It's because old people know the true meaning a heartbreak and pasoori (haste, frustration). :)

Muslims who migrated to pakistan from india still wear sari especially the old grandmothers. Its a cultural dress for some communities such as some urduspeaking migrants. Also this aunty is doing orissi and is a renowned dancer who also owns a dance academy. The video is giving ode to the indigenous cultire of pakistan and the culture of migrant pakistanis too.

Sari is also worn in Pakistan. Its the cultural dress of some communities in Sindh. And many old grannies also normally wear saris. Sari was commonly worn in Pakistan 30-40 years ago but the fashion died in 80s coz of dictator Zia. I hope sari comes back in street fashion. Also sari has nothing to do with religion, its a cultural dress. Some of the most famous Pakistani women who took part in Pakistan movement and later also wore Saris. Sheema ji is Pakistan's maestro Bharatnatyum dancer and her beautiful moves makes this a timeless song! Punjabi song doesn't necessarily mean a desi item song. Pakistan is a country of multiethnic land. Our Punjab is very fast-forward and colourful.
Shea Gill is big time love, she's just brilliant withher calming high notes and becomes a powerhouse when her vocals infuses with Ali Sethi. Their octave notes, the situation, iktara, thedrumbeats and the overall rhythm are tremendously addictive! The song depicts hopeful and happy lovers.
