I have some stratocasters including a '74, an '83, a Mexican, a Squier, one built by me... etc., last year I got a Jet JS400 for fun and I have almost only that one in my hand : it has a truly incredible value for money!
Same here ! I have a Jet 400, a St CV 60, a St Squier 40 Anniversary and a ST Mex. While the level of finish matches the price, the same cannot be said for the overall quality and enjoyment. I did make quite a few modifications to the Jet 400, Wilkinson WVS 50 II trem, locking tuners, alnico pickups and jescar stainless steel frets, precisely because it's a perfect modification platform. The only thing I have to complain about is the quality of the body sanding, which is really done in a hurry. I've had my hands on a lot of low-cost guitars in recent years, Stagg, Harley benton, Sx guitars, Squier etc., and they didn't have this lack of care when it came to sanding before paint and varnish. The neck, on the other hand, is impeccable, except for a trace of glue on a fingerboard dot... Of the 4 stratos, I play Jet the most. I have no conflict of interest with the Jet brand, I'm just an amateur who plays for himself and watches Elmo's videos carefully! Thx Elmo ! I've owned it for over 2 years, so I'm well past the honeymoon stage!
Always love your honesty Elmo! You are so right on the Jet over the squier sonics. Although if you have the money for a sonic, save for a little longer(because it's not much more money) and get the Jet JS-400. It'll go toe to toe with a Squier Classic Vibe and win. Brilliant guitar. $230 in the States. Classic Vibe runs $450-500. I've owned both. I still have the Jet.
Pick what feels comfortable in your hands if you're a beginner and get it setup by a luthier or guitar tech. If you're an intermediate or advanced player you should be able to make anything sound good if its tunable and intonated.
Here’s something for you Elmo, I love teles! I’m mainly a bass player, but teles have this simplistic, beauty that you just don’t find with other kinds of guitars! The pickups are loud, they, like Strats, are infinitely customizable, and it’s hard to screw up a tele! That being said, I recently got a Squier classic vibe 60’s tele custom! Having the ability to play a couple of these classic vibes in a store relatively close to me, I checked out a couple of 70’s teles in the classic vibe range, but this double bound 60’s custom just took the cake! Even through my shit Ibanez ten watt amp with its 8 inch speaker, holy balls I am amazed! I got it used and the previous owner upgraded the bridge to a Wilkinson with the compensated brass saddles, but still, unadulterated, they’re a great bargain! Check one out! I think you’ll like them!
Golden rule! It's a sign of the era of ordering everything online that people can't or won't go and try guitars in person at retail stores. For me it's always try before buy for every guitar. A guitar isn't like a hammer, it's more like clothing. It has to fit us and is a very personal experience. Not every guitar will work for us. We have to feel it and play it to find out. Even beginners can tell right off if the guitar will fit properly. I encourage every player to find your local guitar store and try some guitars out in person.

Yeah, I'm in the same dilemma. My young son wants to learn to play guitar. He like Strat style guitars, particularly red ones (I showed him a Hank Marvin video once and he loved it, but then he like Crazy Frog too, I blame his mother). If he's still interested, I'll probably buy one at Christmas.I don't want to go the 3/4 size guitar route, as I think he'd outgrow it . The Monoprice Indio would be a no-brainer for the price. I've looked at HB & Fazley & I quite like them but I don't think either would be suitable for a beginner. I like that Fazley put the weight of the guitar on their website, wish HB would do the same. On the other hand, my local guitar shop, stocks Jet, local guitar shops are getting rare. I like supporting local businesses. There would be expert help and advice. Jets are considerably more expensive than the Indio though and justifiably so, and I have no idea if he will stick to learning the guitar. Used guitars are out because I haven't seen anything that isn't expensive, rubbish or both. Plus with the added VAT on used items here, it doesn't work out any cheaper and do I really want to give him a used item as his main Christmas present? Still, I've got a few months to mull it over. Maybe he change his mind from wanting to be like Hank Marvin and want to be like Lionel Messi between now & Christmas. Edit- I'm not looking for advice, just commenting to boost the algorithm.
@@MrPolevaulter I don't think he will ever be a Messi, but I will encourage him in everything he wants to do. I don't play guitar and was not very good at football but at least I didn't suck in goal. I am giving him goalkeeping tips and plan to learn the rudiments of guitar, so I can help him learn. I do worry about being one of those parents who are over-controlling though.
i got a sonic ht sss and a js-300. which one i play the most? the pink sonic mustang i got for my niece. indeed try before you buy and always check other types of guitars cause i never expected to like the mustang so bad.
I mean I know it's a lazy question but there are more constructive ways of responding to it and saying the same thing. I would always pick a squier over a third party strat. They are compatible with fender products and have a better resale value. At least in the market I operate in. Way cooler colour options too. I mean there's a purple strat in the sonic catalogue. PURPLE!
My opinion, try guitars out if you can and if you can’t, do research. The first is most optimal. Apart from that, Elmo is kind of my go to for reviews since they’re no bullshit reviews.
Jet have just anounced a new range of upgraded models for 2024 they might be worth waiting for. As for which guitar to buy, i always say the best sample you can find and can afford, We are all different, and as Elmo has said, do your homwork then make an effort to try one before buying, not all samples are made equal and you don't want to end up with a bad one with all the hassle of returning.
I just bought a js 300, there were multiple problems. The bottom of the neck next to the neck pickup was cracked and had signs of checking. The fret work was okay but someone filed the finish of the neck as well as the fret ends. Otherwise i liked the guitar so i might try agian for another one after returning.
Check on what holds a bit of value. Of course you need to like the ergonomics, sound (and l😎😎ks). Ibanez, Sire, Squier CV have nice guitars in the $300-500 range. Jet and Vintage I read positive things about. Below $300 I really do not know but can imagine there are some fine (keeper) guitars as well.
People have become very lazy ! They can't think for them selves ! They don't want to be held accountable and it's easy to blame someone or something else . Information is literally at there finger tips .
It ain't that easy to just watch youtube reviews and choose from that.... Becouse there is _a lot_ "This vid is sponsored by this brand that I am reviewing...." and it still should be honest review....hmm 🙂
Totally agree. This guy prides himself on being independent but when somebody asks for his advice because of his impartiality he calls him LAZY! That's just rude.
I have to put in a ton of time to answer comments as it is. If I responded to evrything I would make less/no videos. How would that benefit anyone? Like I said I'm fine with people not knowing the difference between guitars. I also offer a free route to ask questions I'll respond to (did you watch the whole video?).
@@MrPolevaulter You seem a nice fella and all but a ton of time isn't really relevant is it? What got my back up is calling people LAZY! It is a genuinely nice looking, sounding and good quality instrument, even before you take the price into consideration.
