When I found out how Disney explained how the New Republic defeated the Empire a year after the Battle of Endor, I just groaned. It still made zero sense that the dismantled most of their fleet. Then when hearing about the First Order they didn't take it seriously...
@@chaosomega623 Abrams clearly wanted to just remake A New Hope, but have it also be a direct sequel to Return of the Jedi. But like, you can’t do both of those at once. You have a pick a direction
This whole storyline was so dumb from the start. Palpatine ruining his own Empire, demolishing all the established order and control, so he could... return 30 years later and try to get a grip on the free independent rebellious galaxy??? "Mastermind" this ain't
The core problem is that the whole storyline was written to be an explanation for how we got from ROTJ to TFA, but given Disney's shockingly stupid *lack of any plan whatsoever for the sequel trilogy* that meant nobody even fully knew what the overall situation in the galaxy actually *was.* So Chuck Wendig was given the task to reverse-engineer a way for the galaxy to get to a situation that he didn't actually have any more knowledge of than the fans did. To give Wendig *some* credit, given that he wrote those novels before "somehow Palpatine returned" was even a concept, it actually makes a twisted kind of sense that Palpatine would be *so petty* that in the event of his own death he'd want the whole galaxy burned down with him.
It seems a bit silly but I guess i can see the point; Sidious isn’t like any other ruler. He’s not concerned with leaving a legacy or being remembered or improving the world around him with order and totalitarianism as a means to achieve that- he’s just obsessed with control, so a move like this totally seems in character for him. He’s so self-centered and egotistical that if he can’t have his empire and live forever ruling it, nobody can and should. He _is_ the Empire. To that end, this self-destruction of his empire post-death was him shedding all the excess baggage of the imperial state; all the excess bureaucracy; all the people who used the empire as a stepping stool for personal gain or power. He’s essentially just left with a hardened and intensely motivated group of people who believe in him and his vision, and nothing else. It’s kinda like a NG+ run, I guess. Sure, you’d kinda have to start over and reconquer the Galaxy almost from scratch the hard way, but as far as contingencies meant to set you up for a second attempt at life, I guess it isn’t that bad. He kinda did similar stuff in legends where he reconquered Coruscant after being reborn and then initiated a civil war, so I feel like this all has some sort of precedent anyway; just wish they’d make more use of other imperial remnant factions in NuCanon. Unironically, if you have any better ideas as to how it should’ve been implemented, I’d love to hear them.
it's a plan inspired by hitler's real plans to punish what he saw as a failing germany. it also makes sense in a way, he makes the galaxy suffer while also weeding out those who may be disloyal. the project scared away many, so now all that's left to go to the unknown regions is the upmost loyal of the bunch
@@SultanOfAwesomeness firstly, Lucasfilm needs to acknowledge the criticism. And I mean ALL the criticism it received in the last 10 years - they haven't apologised for anything, they haven't fixed anything, they haven't learn from their mistakes. Secondly, they should delve into the New Republic policies, primary centrists vs. populists conflict that is established in the Bloodline novel. Ex-empirials may not be the awful people, and newly elected rebels may not be the goody two-shoes. And the writers should consider that world politics are not American politics - there are different political systems on our planet other that democrats vs. republicans, you know. Thirdly, they should bring Luke's Jedi order right at the center of things because we know nothing about the reception of Force-users during this period. I don't think I'll see any of that in the future projects. To be frank, I'm not interested in Star Wars any longer. Lucasfilm never tries to please me or any other fans from my country.
@@SultanOfAwesomeness You hit the nail on the head. Plus another thing to keep in mind, Palpatine wouldn't have been able to verify that his ability to resurrect would work until, you know, he needed to use it. I think just adding in the reason he decided to destroy The Empire was for the situation where he was actually truly gone because of him being so vindictive is technically all you'd need. With The First Order being sent for the preferred scenario of him succeeding in being resurrected so he'd still have his army. Not to mention, if he hadn't done so, and had returned and tried to retake The Empire, there's no guarantee that the Emperor who took his place would just hand the reigns back over to Palpatine. Don't get me wrong, I have no doubt that if it came to blows said new Emperor would lose very easily to Palpatine because they likely wouldn't be Force Sensitive or, if they were, likely weren't trained by the Sith/Jedi (unless it was a surviving Inquisitor or Baylan who took control). But, because he was still gone for so long, he would run the risk of the average Empire citizen not knowing who he is, and those who still remember doubting he's really Palpatine as well as likely having a large portion blaming him for the collapse of The Empire after he fell if they were still unable to defeat The Rebel Alliance. Heck, you could even argue he knew that, if the Empire was still around, they would eventually lose to the Rebels without his leadership but would take some time (say 10 years or so). This would have meant that The Empire would still have been destroyed by the time he'd be ready to make his return but The New Republics military might not be as decommissioned because Mon Mothma may not have survived that long (or had less political clout) to push for the rapid destruction of their Navy so soon after The Empire's fall like is the case in the Canon universe.
@NoCluYT agreed. But if they did have him come back, it should have been planned out at a past time and with a longer and more richly filld out overarching story in a way that doesn't diminished Anakin's sacrifice, which is still legitimate and still happened but Palpatine was too sneaky and petty to die like that, even in Legends.
It kinda does. The First Order were the spearhead of the Final Order. But no doubt in Disney's eyes there was a second order, a third order etc etc because they are just shit at exposition
@@Typhoon_Lex see this just boils back to what JJ did with the Knights of Ren and if you read that bullshit comic they literally referred to everything as the ren just the wording of everything made everything got old, "first order last order" be more fucking original
I feel they should’ve capitalized on this idea before the Force Awakens during the hype for that film especially when they still had Star Wars Uprising on the App Store before it got taken down. They waited too long to capitalize on the New Republic era.
This is why you should read this stuff... the Empire purposefully ended almost all of themselves and took the worthy remnants to the unknown regions in order to create the First Order in secret
Many real world empires, such as Napoleon's empire and the Third Reich, didn't last long. The person keeping the empire together was the Emperor. Without him, you get appeasement and internal squabbling.
Honestly, they could reuse the setting of Uprising to make a proper X-Com like game. A rebel movement in an isolated sector of space with just a few planets would be perfect for that.
Is it really so out of character for Palpatine to just want to burn the world in revenge? Granted, he came back later, but he might still want revenge first.
I would be interested if they didn't dump the storyline and characters for nearly a decade. They was no plan for the sequel trilogy and only now are they really fleshing out the time between Return of the Jedi and Force Awakens. He didn't necessarily destroy all of the Empire but he knew it wouldn't last so he left messages for different key imperial leaders which made his return easier and he had many key people bring their forces to the Unknown regions to build a new order for Palpatine but all in secret and away from the eyes of the New Republic which would be suspicious if the entire Empire just dissappeared randomly.
@@Minipsil3 that still doesn't make any sense. you're telling me that instead of coming back to the galaxy with a thousand ships packed with death star lasers immediately after he gets cloned, he decided to go ahead and say to those officers "yeah you know how most of the galaxy still supports me? go ahead and burn those planets so they all hate me." and the whole "building up his forces" thing makes no sense either. the empire is objectively stronger and more numerous than the first order, so there's absolutely no point in "building a new order" when the one he has is just better in every way. if the slightest bit of common sense was used, palps should've just come back immediately with his thousand-ship death star fleet and not send the empire into a death spiral for no reason
