All the young anglers wondering what Bully’s special prize is. It’s a speedboat. A flipping speedboat. Which you have to sell to get a secondhand car, instead of just winning a new Mini Metro.

Thanks Ian. Definitely nowhere near as many canal matches any more for so many reasons. I would’ve done the Canal Pairs this year if it didn’t clash, but maybe next year…

Canal fishing difficulties makes for the best anglers in my opinion its what sharpened up my delicate fishing skills over the years and help you do we on any Venu if you can do well on the cut you should do well anywhere I think ! 🎣🎣🎣🎣🎣
A fantastic days sport. I loved my canal fishing back in the day. I used to fish all round Leics and Northants. I loved the Desque Erics and also floats made by Mick Bassett who used to fish for DAM. I miss those days a lot.
Glad you enjoyed it. I used to fish Mick's White Hart matches on the Northants parts of the GUC back in the day, anywhere from Weedon to Theddingworth I think. Anglers like John Dobbie, Clive Griffin, Hubert Noar, Rich Wills, George Burton etc all there. Watford Park was my fave bit, south of Crick, where the motorway goes over.
@@JonArthur we have probably fished the same matches. The canal scene back in those days was brilliant and matches were always so well supported. That is so kind of you David and it really cheers me up to know my efforts and the silly hours spent editing are appreciated. Almost makes me forget how wet it was! If you ever see me on the bank please say hello ❤️
Absolutely brilliant video Jon.. this is my kind of fishing , loved it.. your enthusiasm never wained despite the weather .. really entertaining and informative.. really appreciated it 👊🏻
Hoping to hit the canal this week, this video was well timed :) Ive watched quite a few of your vids now and i have to say, i really like the annotations detaling the rig, bait, depth, etc. And i really appreciate the close up camera work on the float (Who doesnt 😆), it helps show how you hold the line for that greater arching in the line, slower drop of the bait, but its also more emersive for us viewers. Thank you Jon!
Great video Jon its a pitty the weather was bad at the start. Very informative and great footage keep the videos coming Jon good to see some canal sessions from a legend tight lines 🎣🎣🎣🎣👍
Great video Jon, some nice fish. Crazy that skimmer was caught so close, a proper bonus you might say. When I were a lad (before long poles, mine was bright red fiberglass) you didn't feed that many swims on any venue that I can remember. You did have 3 swims on a canal, pinkies short, bread punch at the bottom the near shelf, casters across and sometimes on the deeper wider sections ground bait and casters down the track for bream, there was no chopped worm then But never all 5, it was not considered good practice. Times have changed
What a great session Jon, well done. Really enjoyed watching you, and that float camera takes it to another level. That dead mangled fish fought well. 😅
Great video, Jon thanks. I’m up and down that stretch of canal quite a bit and I can see there is some big carp in there. You can see them in the summer. Must give it a try but you do make it look easy. 😎
Lovely fishing and very informative Jon. Quite late on in my fishing career, I've really grown to like canal fishing, partly because you never know what the next fish will be. I generally just use the waggler and maggot for the better fish, but if I ever decide to really work the water for its full potential, I know what to do now!😀
Hi Jon loved the video and seeing you catch all that you did especially doing it in abissmal weather. Would love to see more of your pleasure sessions as longer videos like this one

watching this after getting back from a session on the GU at Tring. Wishing I'd watched it before. Baited up - first chuck - hooked a big one and got broken off. What was it you said about starting with a positive rig in case there's a big bream hanging about?....... 🤦🏻♂ Another great video Jon 👍🏻
Loved this video Jon. I have found a bit of grand union near me where there are some bream to about 4 pound. They think they are carp as well charging around everywhere. Perhaps there is a new species of superbream😂.
Good stuff. Used to be very angry bream at Bascote as the canal locks were powerful when they opened and closed. Knowle was good too when you hooked them. Hardest fighting skimmers I remember were on the Kennet & Avon at Pewsey They were on steroids I reckon!
I usually flick my rig downstream so the hook bait is further downstream/tow than the float. I always assume the fish are facing the flow most of the time
@@JonArthur thanks Jon , I love your videos on canals. The camerawork, skill and information are top level. Your voice and the beautifull settings tie it all together.
What an improvement that good camera makes. Every penny on that was well spent. Bit of a weird day from famine to feast. But that's pretty much canal fishing when I frequented the Basingstoke canal about 15 years ago. Best canal bream to grace my net, from that canal, got me a prize, a cracking 7lb 1oz, on a single red maggot, 18 hook and 2lb line. That was back in 93, when all my gear came to less than £40 together, I was clueless and all enthusiasm those days. Take care Jon TTFN
Thanks Graham, I've been back since and roach were very few and far between... but I caught two zander on chopped worm which explains everything I think as I am sure there are lots of predators unsettling the fish in this stretch. Had five nice zander-proof skimmers too though
Another great film mate, wish I had half your energy I can't believe how you do it, matches, sessions not to mention the hours editing.Any thoughts on what winter league you doing this winter?I'm thinking of tunnel or packington but leaning towards tunnel
The Packington WL started last weekend so you've sadly missed that one, but it can be a cruel winter venue over 10 rounds hence why Ive not entered this year or last year. The Tunnel WL teams of 4 starts in a fortnight and they always tend to have spaces if you wanted to get on and let them know in advance. Not sure about their individual WL dates as I usually cannot do those.
I tend to use No9 cube-style shots on lighter lines rather than No8s a lot of people prefer, and sometimes even two or three No10s spread out. All depends how strong the gusts are though.
Hi Jon, how wide on average is your typical grand union canal peg? Thinking of buying a new pole and not sure if i need 16m to fish tight across or whether 14.5m covers that option should i need it.
Hi Richard, I think 14.5 will cover most canals I fish, especially in winter/autumn. You might want 16m to push right to the back in the shallowest water on some summer canals. Most the canals by me are 13-14m, but the bits round Milton Keynes and Luton for example can be 16m, and obviously there are wides and turning bays and marinas, but I tend to find 13m is the optimum and just 8-10m pits you at the base of most shelves.
Hi hello John like you I am all so a member of Leamington where Rowington where are you Fishimg ? What bridge number how do you get there and where can you park your car thank you. I’ll leave for the M42.
I used to fish the Kennet and Avon canal when I was a kid. It was full of crucuians, big roach, perch, tench, bream and carp to 20+ pound; then the boats ruined it. I can only assume you fish this venue for the viewers benefit Jon. I dont think I would enjoy modern canal fishing in any conditions let alone inclement weather.
Kennet and avon is still full of fish. Used to fish pewsey and itching to get back there one day. Great bread fishing and skimmer fishing but end pegs dominate that canal I think
You should give the oxford ago , bedworth, i often catch bags of skimmers , big 3lb+ bream and big hybrids on paste, odd big perch an tench if you fish worm , and if you fill it in with bait and stay till dark youll catch a carp , 2 3 foot in the edges and up to 5 6 foot in the main boat channel
I used to fish all along the Coventry Canal around Bedworth, Marston Lane, Atherstone, Grendon, Rawn Hill, Twin Bridges, back of Nuneaton FC/Jewsons, Donnithorne etc etc when I lived that way. Was a short walk to the Greyhound at Sutton Stop too. Lot of big zander in there as well now.
@JonArthur honestly jon its worth ago again, november just gone just of bulkington road where the old navi used to be, i had 13 bream / skimmers over a 1lb all on bread punch in about 2 hours in the evening , you can fish from of the old golf course side still as well, and last winter my mate had a little chub out down the bulko road area on double maggit
