Cody Rhodes Reveals What He Thought Of The Goldust Character In The 90s in this ITR Live clip from 2016 with Kenny McIntosh. Subscribe to the channel for more clips of our live shows and interviews, and don't forget to like and comment too!
Why would the host say such a cruel and unusual remarks about the death of someone and then tearing down a successful black wrestler at that? Extremely poor taste and you will rot in hell for that one. Aside from the tasteless behavior of the host, I loved Cody's story about his the Goldust impersonator acting gay but not getting any reaction these days because 2010s and being gay doesn't create any shock value anymore since it's largely accepted. It just shows the strides America has made from a day and age where all you had to do was be gay to be such a hated heel and now no one bats an eye. Makes me proud to be a 35 year old gay male. Honestly, I hated the boos Goldust got as a kid because Val Venis did the same thing only towards women and no one bat an eyelash at him, but it was oohhhhhhhhhh so evil and bad to the fans with Goldust. But in the end, that's what made Goldust magical. His shock value. Wouldn't have much effect these days like Goldust's story.
I always felt McMahon had something against the Rhodes and Goldust was intended to diminish Dustin in some way. But he made it one of the best, weirdest, most innovative characters in wrestling history.
Absolutely. He made Dusty fight in gold and black polka dots. Dustin, he made a gold and black androgynous weirdo. And they both got over. Fuck Vinnie K
WWE tried to humiliate Dusty with polka dots and tried to humiliate Dustin with Goldust but man the wrestler surpasses it all! Dustin rocks and I love calling him Dustin Rhodes! RIP Dusty! Dustin paved the way for Cody unknowingly and the prince will return and recover
Definitely. Guys like Goldust are why I personally care more about the IC title than the top titles. He's in my top five for sure and doesn't get brought up nearly enough.
He’s gotten more deluded and insufferable with his age. Idk what you’re smoking. Ever since he hit the indies he’s been the king of blowing smoke up his own ass.
I know there's always going to be mixed opinions on Goldust but I honestly always loved him ever since I first saw him. He always was one of the most standout characters in wrestling to me and he'll always be one of my favorites.
I was a kid back in the early 2000s I found gold dust relatable not the gay act but the way people saw him as weird and kids at school found me weird to so idk I found goldust cool and different.
When I was young I thought he was weird, but I started watching again last SummerSlam and I'm watching from '96 on. In 2003 now and golddust is awesome. Him and booker T were great as a tag team. Wish they lasted longer
Goldust gimmick worked in 1997, 2007, and 2017. He was popular and was a draw. Top 10 in my books especially when his character transitioned into attitude era comedy. Still look back at how Dustin/Goldust made HHH and Rick Flair break character in the ring by bursting out laughing.
@@bobjob66 I don't think he was saying the character only worked in 97, 07 and 17, he was saying that for example Dustin was able to keep the character fresh and relevant in whatever era he played him.
As a kid, I HATED Goldust and thought he was a joke of a “wrestler” now as an adult with an understanding of the wrestling business, I now realize how rare and one of a kind Goldust actually is. Not sure if we’ll ever get another Goldust, what a legend 💯
Always a fan of Goldust, and I was a huge fan of Razor Ramon. Even when they were feuding, I was still a fan of the Dust. So unique, and he played it perfectly. He's also a great wrestler, which helped him make that character succeed.
Gold dust is to the 90’s as gorgeous George was to the 50’s. Completely outlandish for the time but inspired how the business would evolve in later years.
That's a great point. He pushed the envelope for how strange an in-ring character can be and kept the theatrical vibes alive at a time when you more and more wrestlers performing in jeans and t-shirts. Nowadays I doubt we'd have characters like Demon Finn Balor and Danhausen without Goldust.
@@thegoughandbordenfamily8234not everyone can do the same gimmick dumbass, I meant in broadening the terms of what’s acceptable. Like Rico, billy and Chuck, Nyla rose, micky James, Sonny kiss, etc
I always loved the goldust character… even in the 90’s when it wasn’t “cool” to like goldust. I remember his feud with Brian Pillman right before he died. The match stipulation was he wins a night with Terri runnels (gold dusts wife and valet) at the time. Such an underrated feud
Honestly that's be funny to watch him doing his usual stuff but instead its opposite everyone into it so he gets frustrated doesn't do it and that's how he gets the heat 🤣
@@Theblackvortex75 That's th advantage of being androgynous... you can be gay the one moment, straight the next... playing with people and doing the unexpected.
I first discovered Goldust on WWF Warzone on PS1. His grudge match promos on that game were amazing. Not long after that I started tuning in to the WWF and WCW but by then Dustin had switched to WCW
The initial version of goldust was epic. It was just C R E E P Y as hell. Then as they do many times, they took the character and made him a background comedy gimmick.
Immature 10 year old me: Eww, Goldust is gay! Modern day me: Dustin Rhodes is an awesome wrestler and Goldust is one of the greatest wrestling characters ever.
As an adult I appreciate Dustin and Gold Dust even more than I did back when it was brand new. I'm not exactly sure I fully understood what the deal was at first, but looking back on it, I don't think anyone else would have been able to pull it off quite the same way.
Goldust is one of the most brilliant characters in pro wrestling history .... completely unique, Dustin's performance was outrageously superb, so many transitions from sexuality to mystery to being a comedy face to being a ruthless heel .... absolutely champion worthy level of performance, and easily a HOF character
I found the Goldust character so bizarre yet so unique and so captivating back in the day. His entrance was just superb: Mr. DeMille, I'm ready for my close-up!
I will not rest until I see another Goldust run in WWE similar to his initial run the rich history behind the character makes it even more nostalgic to me but even though I didn’t quite grasp what was going on at that time because I was very young, but when I watched WWE I remember vividly that I want to see Goldust show up
Regardless of what anyone thinks of the Golddust character, nobody could have performed it better than Dustin Rhodes played it. He nailed that character and Terri/Marlena was great too. Second best character in WWE history after The Undertaker.
I believe the goldust character was one of the big things that started the attitude era! For me though the other two things that started that era was, Austin's kotr win and of course the Mr McMahon character. Imagine the heat Mr McMahon would have had feuding with Bret Hart back in that time! He'd have ripped Canada, could have been bigger with Bret, had Bret not went to WCW.
In my view, Goldust was that first seed for the Attitude Era. By the time the attitude era came around, it was not the gimmick it used to be, but I still feel it has its place.
If not for the golddust character, Dustin would’ve been without a job. Golddust was one of the best gimmicks and Dustin did a way better job with that character then he’s done with anything in his wrestling career
I DON'T GIVE A SHIT ABOUT HATERS I LOVED GOLDUST. I WAS FREAKING 7 YEARS OLD AND I WAS BLOWN AWAY AND ENTRANCED BY GOLDUST GIMMICK. I LOVED THE ENTRANCE MUSIC, THE FACE PAINT AND THE OUTFITS. He is a great wrestler and wwe doesn't deserve him. He deserves great things and was underappreciated.
Goldust might not be as good as other superstars in wwe but it is iconic and was something that really worked cause i don't think any WWE fan would forget who he was So i think goldust did its job very well
The first time I saw Goldust was ‘03 or ‘04 on Smackdown HCTP. I thought he was the coolest most unique in the game, I also thought his entire getup included a mask because of the video game.
Personally, I didn’t ‘get it’ with Goldust. I found it weird, uncomfortable, strange… I was a kid. Looking back it’s such an amazing wrestling character. Knowing or unknowingly he was ahead of his time. I love watching old matches now.
How good was Goldust? People are discussing whether he was great 25 years later. In business terms that is success. And, as Cody, says, it made him rich.
Goldust was one of the first characters I ever saw as a kid watching WWF, and I was immediately intrigued and he was my favorite for the longest time. Such a unique and memorable character.
We can now look back at Goldust and see why it was a great character (Thanks to Dustin's devotion and talent) and we can see how he wasn't given the full potential. He should have been given more and a reign of this "wreck everybody up", but that flame was diminished with the Roddy Piper match. That should have been a bigger climatic feud/match after giving Goldust his due.
Definitely some odd family dynamics going on here. The fact that Dustin wasn't even speaking to his family, and then the first time they're all together he tries to show them his wrestling as Goldust. Then, his father manages to leave before even watching the video of Dustin wrestling in the WWE. Really sad to hear.
I love how he talks about not wanting to see dolph do a bad stand up set and have to tell him it's good anyways but even tho dolph is actually just as much a stand up comedian as he is a wrestler
Idk what this guy’s problem is hating on Savio Vega and Mabel getting a push enough to quit watching the program, but it really diminishes his wrestling cred…
I’m almost positive that they all hated the Goldust character at first…because Dustin was helping Vince to dig at the Rhodes family. And that was his rebellious phase. But they were proud of what he became and what he made it into. If he had failed to succeed as a WWE wrestler they would have hated it even more.
Dustin is the bravest wrestler to ever step into that ring. Homophobia was incredibly strong in the 90's and anything that even eluded to it was revolutionary. Golddust is basically the David Bowie of the WWE. An eternal classic character that will be remembered FOREVER!!! I hope he gets into the hall of fame. He truly deserves it.
Clap for goldust. Ok that was to big of a clap. I thought that was funnier than I should have I think. After HITC the have to give I'm the strap when he gets back.
I've been to that UCB theater when Ziggler was there but it was a different show called the Tournament of Nerds and he was a judge. He must have a good relationship with them.
At the time, I played WWF Attitude on the N64 way more than I saw the show (my Mum seemed the sore too violent, by the game was fine, go figure) and I didn't think that Goldust was real, but rather a joke character added into the game (just like how Al Snow's Head was) since the whole thing just seemed so odd with the appearance and Shattered Dreams being outwith the scope of the rules. It was only years later that I appreciated that the show wasn't about who wins each match, but who provided greatest entertainment value, and Goldust was up there with the best of them during that era
If youre a heel you want the fans booing but also enjoying your gimick personality etc and if youre not you want to be likable and don't want boos. This is grade school knowlege.
What was best imho is in a big strong masculine job , Vince went "there" with Golddust. Heard another story recently when Savio Vega asked Dustin in NY area to get risqué it was gross but got heat.
He creeped me out as a kid in the 90s. Having larger than life action heroes get molested by some weird gay pervert was unsettling to pre-pubescent me.
I didn't like Gold Dust at first but that's probably because I knew who he was because he was in the WWF as Dustin Runnels or Rhodes before he became Gold Dust and I liked him just because he was was Dusty's son I suppose.

Nobody on the roster at that time could of made gold dust work like Dustin
It does make you wonder how a character like Golddust would be received today.
Oh he’d have so much heat…..non wrestling fans will come out of the woodwork and try to cancel the WWE.
The Golden Truth went over well. So did Cody and Golddust.
Like a hero instead of the villain
@@joshrichards9121 Everyone is accepting of being gay. Wouldn't have any shock value I don't think. I don't think the WWE wrestling community is full of homophobes either like it used to be.
@@Tonetare it’s not so much being gay but being a predatory gay character people didn’t like.
Honestly he needs to be in the HOF
It’s part of wwe history 🔥🔥
I loved loved loved the Goldust character and wished he would have been taken much more seriously. He should have had more title wins. I loved his whole fucken look and wrestling.
If Dustin Rhodes wasn't on and off with WWE, Goldust could surely have won the big god in WWE
