  • Effective Use of Mirrors for a FLH (ADI Part 3 & Standards Check)
Here the ORDIT trainer demonstrates how to recap on mirror use before giving practical instruction to develop effective use of mirrors.
This could be used as a lesson theme for a Part 3 or Standards Check for a FLH who has fallen into bad habits.
The trainer uses effective Q&A to prevent the mistakes by asking focused questions, such as
"before you signal which 2 mirrors will you check?"
    and "why?"
Be sure to pick up on other driver faults and identify, analyse and remedy.
Howard Floyd is the founder of How-2-Drive and is an Approved Driving Instructor ADI helping people to pass the driving test and is an ORDIT Trainer helping people become fully qualified instructors.

Would it benefit the driver of always checking all 3 mirrors to get more information from around the vehicle, I know it’s more difficult but would that benefit more?

I am have been enjoying all your videos, mirrors, roundabouts and junctions. I find them helpful and easy to to understand and remember as you use catchy phrases like 'if you can walk it you can cross it' I like the way you explained that you always use mirrors in pairs. Please could you do a video on hazard perceptions because I passed my multiple choice but missed out by 5 to 6 perceptions.

    • @How-2-drive

We just need to be aware of our surroundings, so if a motorcycle was about to overtake or a scooter was try to pass on the left, the driver should be aware, so update the mirrors before changing speed or direction.

    Hi Howard,
I'm thinking of taking an 86 year old full driving licence holder for my part three. He is a great driver but I could work on his mirror checks, especially the left one. The only other thing I have noticed is that his lane discipline is not great. Would you suggest I keep the part three to only mirrors and just talk about the lane discipline, or stop and change the lesson? Would I be penalised for not stopping?
    Thanks

moby s you’ll need to prepare a 1 hour lesson for a pupil. The examiner will observe from the back seat.
Pick a lesson that the pupil needs to learn.
I’d strongly advise you get yourself a good trainer.
