Why Americans Think All Accents Sound the Same

  • One of the things that surprised me after moving to the United States was how often my accent was mistaken for something else.
    British.
    Irish.
Sometimes “Australian… but kind of British.”
It’s not that Americans think all accents sound the same.
It’s just that if you didn’t grow up around them, your brain doesn’t have many reference points.
And to be fair, Australians do exactly the same thing with American accents.
In this episode I explore why accents are so easily confused, how movies and television shape what we think accents are supposed to sound like, and why recognising subtle differences often comes down to simple exposure.
Accents carry history, geography, and culture - but if you haven’t heard them regularly, your brain takes shortcuts.
    So be honest…
Did the Australian and New Zealand accents sound the same to you the first time you heard them?

If you enjoy the quieter reflections behind these cultural moments, I explore them further each week in the Thursday podcast episode This Week in America.

Curious if this is just me - or if you’ve noticed accents blur together too once you’ve been away a while.

The shrimp line is America’s greatest Australian invention. Always appreciate you keeping me honest, Larry. Take it easy mate.
