- Matthias Numon Hanson was born on Jan. 26th 1990 in Germany. Because
of his father being active in the military they moved back to the US in his early
years where he attended Larue County schools and truly took a liking to helping
people and playing football. After being a football standout, he graduated in
2008 and pursued his passion of serving his country in the armed forces as a
Marine.
He was deployed to Parris Island, South Carolina in the summer of 2008
where he received his basic training and introduction into the Marines. After
earning his stripes he was then stationed in Camp Lejeune, NC through the rest
of 2008 and into the fall of 2009. He joined the elite fighting force known as 3rd
Battalion 6th Marines 2nd Squad Infantry. If you knew Matt, he loved action & adrenaline and by joining this team of soldiers he would be placed on the front lines of battle so he could experience just that.
Towards the end of 2009 he received his call to deploy and put boots on
the ground in Afghanistan. He was armed with a M-16 and an attached grenade launcher. Matt was a skilled shooter so he always found himself towards the
front line. He called Camp Leatherneck home during his stint of duty which
would later be named Camp Hanson in his honor.
In February of 2010 he was engaged in a true dogfight which would later
be labeled as the Valentine’s Massacre. After several days of fighting, while
running across a field in northern Marjia a sniper struck Matt with a bullet in his
leg, running up through his hip and eventually the top of his body. He did
make it to cover where he was cared for by his peers until being med-evacced
out to a hospital where he would later pass away from his injuries sustained.
Sacrifice and unselfishness are defined in a lot of ways. But there will never be a greater showing of these than men and women laying down their lives for people they’ve never met so they can sleep peacefully at night. Matt was only 20 years old at the time of his death, but he done more living, giving, &
sacrificing than most people do in a complete lifetime. We say thank you in this small way to a son, a brother, an uncle, a friend, and a hero.
