You can clearly picture Mr. Thornton storming away in his almighty anger and wounded pride. It is hauntingly beautiful.

Poor Mr. Thornton. I personally like this rejection than the one between Lizzy and Mr. Darcy

Oh man, this whole scene, in both the book and tv series, was so much better than Pride & Prejudice, and this is coming from a diehard Austen fan. This whole story just really is the gold standard in period drama and romance, and it helps a great deal that the role of the already lovely Mr. Thornton was given to Richard Armitage--no one could have taken the character further. Lizzy Bennet humiliated Darcy and forced him to take a hard look at himself. Margaret Hale broke something deep inside of John Thornton, and even during the train scene at the end you can still see how his heartbreak has changed him. The whole series was just lovely to a t.

Perhaps I don't know the gentleman's way myself but I thought Margaret was being the ungentlewoman in that proposal scene.

I don't understand why in the first proposal she rejected him. I mean she had to be blind to not see that he was completely devoted and in love with her ! Maybe the answer is in the book I ordered it.

His mother and sister were so sure that she has feelings for him so she thought his proposal was out of pity or he just proposed to save her reputation , that's just my opinion

This, and I agree with an analysis I read somewhere else. Margaret has not come to terms with her mature femininity yet. She's still hanging on to visions of Helstone and her girlhood. She is described as "not beautiful at all" by neighbors during her childhood (which is contradicted by the narrator and later by other characters). So, she simply doesn't see herself as an object of attraction. It just hasn't occurred to her that she is seen as a beautiful woman who must be ready and looking for marriage. Even Henry Lennox's proposal isn't a clue for her.
