  • Many people have the TOMY Big Loader & Big Big Loader in it's various forms. These toys rely on one power unit to do all the work and when it's broken the toy looses all its play value. So here is a video detailing the problems I found with a power unit which came with a Thomas & Friends Big Loader trains set.
I look at the very common problem of split nylon gears which spin on shafts and show how you can fix them, this can happen to other styles of toys especially the TOMY and Trackmaster Thomas & Friends toy trains.
This toy has a heritage going right back to the 1970's, it's definitely a classic toy but be wary there are cloned knock off toys getting about which can have some major flaws. This video investigates the copy Thomas Big Loader set which I compared to the real Tomy Product. • Thomas Tank Dark Side ...
Thomas and Friends, "Томас и его друзья" "Thomas y sus amigos" "Thomas und seine Freunde" "きかんしゃトーマス" "토마스와 친구들" "Thomas et ses amis" "thomas dan teman-teman" "थॉमस और दोस्तों" "Thomas ei suoi amici" "โทมัสและเพื่อน ๆ" "thomas e seus amigos" "Thomas och vänner" "托马斯和朋友" "Thomas og Friends" "Thomas ve Arkadaşları" "توماس والأصدقاء" "Thomas và các bạn"
Thomas the Train, "Thomas el tren" "Thomas le train" "トーマス電車" "토마스 기차" "Томас поезд"" Thomas o trem" "Thomas kereta" "Thomas der Zug" "Thomas ang tren" "Thomas vlak" "托马斯火车" "توماس القطار" "Thomas a vonat" "Thomas tàu"

Thank you SO much for this! Yours was the only video I could find when I accidentally took the cover off the base of power unit instead of unclipping the battery compartment. Cogs and gears all over the place. I had trouble fitting it all back in properly. Our set has seen 4 kids through their childhood. Now I can maintain it for a few more generations of children!

This was perfect, even 8 years later! I pulled out our old Big Loader to show my granddaughter over zoom... it did not work despite my cleaning out all the collected hair and lint. Fixing the rubber gripper on a wheel and adhering one of the gears to a shaft, using a drop of glue in each case, was all it took and now it is working great.

Wow, it works again. I had taken the main unit apart a few years ago and it remained in pieces. After seeing your video I was able to fix two problems with CA Glue (loose gear and loose rubber part of the wheel) and put it back together. It works awesome again. Thanks So Much!!!

The tiny load-bearing split gear is EXACTLY what happened to my grandson's Big Loader. It was such a dis appointment when we got it (2nd-hand) and it didn't work properly, but I took it apart - like you did - and surmised the problem, The trouble was that I was still a bit stuck as to how to fix it. The sqeeze-with-pliers-and-superglue treatment worked like magic!
Well done on a useful, helpful and well produced vid. *****

Tomy replaced my power unit for me for free! back in the 1970's this was my very favourite toy. I think I must have had the original version as it was pre-Thomas and as I recall the power car took two AA batteries (even the current version has the remnants of the space for it but you can see how the original design has been updated). I remember playing with it so much that I got through several sets of Duracells, and eventually the motor burnt out. I was devastated so my parents helped me to write to Tomy to buy a new motor for my unit. Instead I got a completely new power car in the post! I was very impressed and remain a fan of Tomy products 35 years later :). I just wish I still had that set...

yes I have read a fair bit about the original sets Tomy did, and they are the ones worth the dollars if they are in very good condition

Well thank you very much mate...i was about to sell mine (which is an original) then after watching your video i simply superglued the wee cog on and it's like new. I've now gave it to my nephew to play with and look after and he loves it.

Here is another fix for when the toy doesn't change direction correctly or when the wheels don't move in one of the directions properly.
In my case when the toy would change directions the wheels would end up stuttering or not even move. I traced this back to the cog under the main wheel axel - see 2:55 in the video above for the bit I am talking about.
What I found is that the cog could move sideways, and when going in one of the directions the cog would move sideways to such a point where it was not connecting with the cog above. After looking at the problem I saw there was a bronzy metal bit on the end of the left end of the axle that was meant to hold it steady in place but that it had moved so that the outside end of it was going outside the main plastic body of the toy (and was therefore resting right next to the wheel). I had to take the axle out and then put it back in while squeezing the bronzy metal bit back inside the main plastic chassis. And that fixed my problem. Actually I also note that in the video (at 2:55) that there is also meant to be a spring on the left hand side holding the cog in place, but mine doesn't have that one, and my fix still works.

interesting query, the answer in no because the retail shops use the toy department as the big profit department to cover other departments which have specials
I heard this from a major retailer manager from a very well knows brand retailer
toys here in Oz are totally overpriced and the chances of a price reversal are zero, we are so used to the rip off now it's here for good

I still have the original big loader set in its box and used by my son to this day. It still works perfectly and you can see the difference in the quality build. It’s defiantly far superior to the later sets including the Thomas variety. Like most toys from the 70’s and 80’s they where built to last!

i would die for an American accent, considering so much of my audience is from the USA they must get sick of hearing my Oz drone
anyway when i was a kid i had a speech problem so i don't sound like a real Oz person

Hi Leo! I purchased this set second hand. I cleaned the chassis after watching your video. I am still having problems with it offloading the balls and going up the hill. Could the cause be the traction tyres which could be worn? Would you know where I can get a replacement? Thanks heaps for your video's!!

Hi there, thank you for this video! I like many others (it appears) thought you had to unscrew the 3 screws in order to insert batteries. Much to my dispear all the running gear fell out and I had no idea how to put it back together again until finding this video. One issue I have though after successfully putting the engine unit back together is that when running it has a slight/intermittent screaming noise in the gears. Have you experience this and if so is there a solution?

The split in the gear happened to my Tomy Duck, Toby and Trackmaster Flynn. I think it usually happens when the motor is on and younger kids (like my cousins) force the train to go in the other direction.

I don't know what's wrong with a PlaysStation? All this traditional toy nonsense is utterly ridiculous! Kids should be silently monging out in their bedrooms with tech, not creating a noise and bother and disturbing their parents...
