🇬🇧 - Location and fun facts about Valencia :
The name of the city derives from the Latin word for "Brave" ⚔️. The city originated as a retirement resort for veterans of the Imperial Roman Army, therefore it was baptized as "Valentia" to honor their bravery and service to the Empire.
Our journey began in the Patraix neighbourhood with an improvised night under the stars because the keys of the accommodation were faulty and they didn't fit properly into the lock. However, our misfortune soon turned into a unique experience thanks to the hospitality of the neighbours, who were still awake at 2 a.m. and were kind enough to lend us a mattress and a duvet ✨
We start the day exploring the Russafa district, which dates back to the days when Valencia used to be a Muslim city. Once the garden of the Emir of Cordoba's son himself, nowadays it has become the Hip neighbourhood. Naturally, it homes many thirft shops, cafés and art studios 🛍
Next, we decided to visit Colon Market, a jewel of Valencia's Art Nouveau style that often gets outshined by Mercat Central. Less crowded than one of the city's main touristic landmarks, this other market focuses on gastronomy over produce stands. That makes it an excellent place to come relax while filling your belly with a pint of Valencia's most famous beer, Turia, a refreshing glass of Orxata, a traditional plant-based beverage made from tiger nut, or a delicious ice-cream 🍨
The Turia Gardens are one of the largest urban natural parks in Spain. This green space expands over more than nine walkable kilometres, crossing the city. This huge park was built over the old bed of the river Turia, which was diverted out of the city to stop the frequent flooding that the city experienced. Throughout the Gardens we can find leisure and sports facilities, as well as many romantic corners to get lost in. From Cabecera Park to the City of the Arts and the Sciences, the Turia Gardens are an ideal route for runners, cyclists, families and nature lovers. Some of the main museums and monuments of the city are on both banks of the old bed of the Turia, which is overviewed by 18 bridges, testimonies of centuries of history 🌳
A visit to Valencia can't really be complete without a stop at its most iconic landmark, can it? La Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències (The city of the Arts and the Sciences) is a remarkable example of Neofuturism where visitors are transported to a futuristic, space-like scenario. This architectural complex is entirely dedicated to promoting and showcasing culture, as it is composed by numerous buildings such as a Museum, an Opera house or a Planetarium, among others. Each one of these structures is meant to resemble something else, like a Human Eye or the Carcass of a Fish. Set your imagination free trying to make sense of these architectural shapes while enjoying the overall chill vibes of the place.
Thanks to Lucía for the research ♥️
