The Nintendo PRJECT. This is one of the coolest DIY builds I've seen in quite a while. I wish more systems were self contained without losing functionality... I want 5 of these for my future nursing home.
Awesome build Wes, glad to see the video since all the talk on the podcast. I have an old NES but it works , don't want to mess it up building a RetoPi
Absolutely! It is a Brookstone Brand Keychain projector. This exact model is a bit hard to find now, but they popup from time to time on Amazon from time to time! Link: amzn.to/2JDGrLE They aren't terribly fantastic when it comes to video quality, but the size, built in lithium ion battery and speaker more than make it a great little item to tinker with and hack open.
That is a fantastic question! It's honestly been a while since I have tested that(been working on this off and on for a long time), but I want to say like 2-3 hours? On the next revision, I want to definitely add more battery cells.
V2 concerns: Wireless charging is fun, but it's also slow and wasteful. Recommend adding wired power/charging for the console. The removable projector shield is a weak point. Someone is going to lose or break that. If possible, it may work to drill through the black cover and then add a thin, transparent plastic shield over that whole face, then just color the silver part of the projector face black so that it all looks decent from the outside. It would need a lot of tinkering to get it right, though. That reset button looks like its not going to last. The mini also doesn't appear to be well seated. I'm not sure if that's just at that point in the build or if it's got room to shift around in there, but it would be wise to pack it in tightly with foam tape or whatever so that it can't jiggle around and get scuffed or break a contact. All in all a very cool project. Thanks for showing it!
Fast forward to today and it all works as originally shown, and no projector cover has been lost, so you can sleep well! Thanks for putting so much thought and effort into your comment. Cheers.
You should add a gyroscope sensor to each joystick. If they are jolted too hard, the “cord” would have yanked the system and caused it to blink out. I mean, an infant could beat Mario 3 with a stable system...🤣
man thats amazing well done sir. I have an nes as well, my question is we used to blow the games to make it work, will a new edge connector fix that issue'?
Hey thanks!! Yep! There are a good number of screws to get in there, but it is a pretty straightforward replacement ( there are many guides and videos on it) and it doesn't require any soldering. You just swap the parts out. Here is a link to the part: ebay.to/31Y6uU1 The other thing I would look at, is removing the built up corrosion on the game connectors themselves. If you take a very fine grit sandpaper (i.e. 200 grit), you can very gently remove the green corrosion from each side of the game connector, revealing fresh new copper for your fancy new edge connector to interface with. Sorry for the long winded response, but it will be worth it! ;)
This is so cool. I’m trying to figure out right now how to make a “Portable NES” out of an nes classic. I also adopted a similar “do no harm” policy, so I’m using the shell from a knock off nes classic to house the internals of an actual nes classic. It’ll be a clamshell design with a knockoff controller built in. I love your take on this idea, and I think you executed it very gracefully.
They are all broken ones found on eBay. I want to incorporate some in some future projects and am only willing to permanently alter them if they were broken first. 🤓

Man, remove and use only the Nes classic Board! Complete console inside is ridiculous!
Pick one: 1: It hadn't been done before. 2: It was fun. 3: I like creating things. 4: It was a challenge. 5: People's reactions to it have been amazing. 6: It was picked up and published in a prominent magazine. 7: You must be new to my channel. 8: Why not?
That's beautiful work and so inspiring! Great job Wes!
Also, FIRST!
Indeed you are!!!😆
I never get to be first, I had to! 😂
@@C3DPropShop Glad you did! :D
DUDE... you are a mad scientist, I freaking love this. Now I need to make one myself.
DO IT! 🤓
Craaaaaaazy. The wireless charging is such a cool idea. So well done 👏
Thanks Forby! I appreciate your advice along the way as well!

Thanks man!! It was a lot of fun and I am pretty happy with how it came out on pretty much the first try...just disregard how long that try took. Haha
Such a great project. Thanks for bringing us along through the build!
Thanks Jon! I appreciate that! Happy to have you tagging along. ;)
Great job!!! It was fun to all sides of that build!
Awesome video! Great project. Out of the box thinking for sure. Wes you never disappoint. 🔥👍🏼🔥
Hey, thanks Chad! I appreciate that! My projects may not ever be practical, but they are almost always fun! :D
Wes Swain no doubt. This one is practical. It can go everywhere. Practically. 🤣
@@ManCrafting Let's haul it up Stone Mtn and have people play it!
Geeksmithing you know I’d do it in a second. Well 20 minutes. That’s about how long it takes me to climb on a good day.
Great work. Inspired a few ideas I've been wanting to try. Thanks for sharing.
Awesome! Glad to hear it!
Super cool build and awesome editing!
Hey thanks Rich!!! It's been a long time coming and I'm glad its finally done! 😆 Thanks for checking it out!
Wow! Love it!
Thanks dude!

Thanks man! Glad to finally be done after talking about it for so long! 😆 And yeah, I wouldn't dare mess up a working NES with a retroPI! Mmmmm 🥧.
Dude. Just dude. This is absolutely incredible! Love it!
Thanks man! I am quite happy with how it turned out, especially considering it was a first run prototype basically.
Congratulations man, you're a genius !!! Adding an HDMI output will be a good idea. 👍🏻😉
Ha! Hey thanks! It was a fun project! :D
Great work Wes! A fun concept and really clean implementation
Hey thanks Ben! I appreciate that! I was just thinking about your yesterday and your Jack-o-lantern project! :D Hope all is well!
Super cool! Excellent concept and execution.
Thanks Jeff! That means a lot!
Wow. What a clever and cool project.
Thanks Mark! I have taken it around town and had strangers play it while projected on various surfaces and had a ball!
Can you share any information regarding the pocket projector? Make and model? I'm curious about it, as I've never seen one that small before.

That's cool. How much playtime do you get before the batteries need charging?

Thanks Mr. Phil! It was a lot of fun!

And I did actually add a secondary corded charging capability, that plugs into the OG controller port. ☺️
Nice.
Very cool!
Thanks dude!!!!😊
This is so freaking cool! Great work
Thanks pal!
OMG that was SO cool IM INSPIRED
Thanks!!! Hope you make something awesome!
You’re a damned genius! Also we have the same taste in Mega Man remixes.

I would totally play this on my forehead.
Because......you know....plenty of room.
Fact.
that is a cool thing because i saw it in rl and it was cool
Thanks buddy! Thanks for beta testing it!
Yep! Thanks for being a beta tester! 😊
@@Geeksmithing 😄
Alright, I just bought the last one of those projectors. Probalby going to regret it, but I'm gonna regret it to the tune of $40, so I'll survive.
Niiiiice! Where did ya find it?
@@Geeksmithing On your link. I saw that it was the last one available, and that and the price tag overrode my better judgement.

Thanks Shawn! I agree! I think the inclusion of projectors , even small ones can really allow for some neat ideas.
