Jammu is the southernmost region of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is primarily located in the Shivalik Range of the Himalayas. The Kashmir Valley, on the other hand, is in the northwestern part of the region, surrounded by the Himalayas and the Pir Panjal Range.
Each region has its distinct culture. Jammu is known for its Dogra culture, influenced by Hindu traditions. The Kashmir Valley has a predominantly Muslim population with its unique Kashmiri culture.
