Went through basic with the A1, did most of my time with the A2 until Iraq and Afghan with the M4 and M249. Liked the size of the M4 and short barrel M249 with para for vehicles, but will always have a soft spot for the A2 iron sights - was always a little jealous of the jarheads with A4s.

Bought my Colt Sporter Target Model Rifle in December 1991 for $595 brand new. Serial number in the 7000’s. 20” barrel, 1:7 Twist, semi-auto BCG. Fun rifle to own and shoot. I will keep it forever. Or until I pass it down to my daughter. She may need it one day.
Picked up an older Colt Match Target HBAR. Had been sitting on the consignment rack for many years. Guess the 20 inch configuration had fallen out of favor. Asked to take a look. Still had the rolled cardboard in the barrel. Mint condition and unfired. One of my favorite finds and the price was close to what it went for in the early 1990's. Colt made some monumental errors over the years. But they sure built a fine rifle in this era.
I also own a pre ban Hbar and absolutely love it. I purchased mine while I was serving . I was so use to the M16 at the time. The Hbar I own is very close to the one designed for the Marines. The bolt however is the original with the cut out of it and not the full auto bolt which I would prefer. The transitional models came with different lowers. Some were built on the SP1 lower. Mine still has the sear block that has not been ground down. I think this is one of Colts great rifles but the stuff they did to some of these even before the ban sucks! I do love the 1/7 rifling which helps stabilize the heavier rounds. I always wanted the Delta Hbar. But could never come to grips with the price which basically came in a case had a leather sling and a Tasco rubberized scope . And of course the crappy riser for the Optics which like I said is just a tasco. And of course the Delta grip. It is the only AR I own that has all the original furniture and Colt magazine.
I'm really glad I bought mine way back in '89 or whenever it was. It looks great next to my retro CAR-15 that I put together around the same time. Kind of funny that this is originally what the AR15 looked like before the beginning of the Dark Times.
I have the hbar pre ban slab side receiver. I trained on the m16a1 at Fort Fix. Never forgot how to take it down. A2 sights took some time to figure out, but I prefer them. I am glad the marine corps pushed that thru.
The Colt A2 Sporter was my first AR and I still have it to this day. My model must have been older since it has fixed sights and no cuts on the lower half of the bolt. I eventually had to replace the upper receiver because the rear pin hole literally wore-out and wobbled like crazy. I hated to do this because I wanted to keep it mint but the gun smith said it would be better to just replace the upper all together.
Highly accurate weapon. Sadly underrated wrongfully. I love that weapon to my heart. Carried it for 16 yrs. Never failed me. Caribbean law enforcement.
@@TheFastshelby seriously. If everyone who is bitching that they stopped public sales actually bought one of their rifles. Then they might have not stopped selling them.
The last of the good ol' days of Colt. That is a solid looking rifle. I despise them now, though I notice them clawing back from the grave for the 'nth time.
I have this exact rifle. It's called a "mid-ban", pistol grip but no bayonet lug. Take a look inside the lower receiver. There is a block of metal inserted into a slot where the auto sear would be. You can see where Colt put that block in and then used a blind pin to hold it in place. Removing that pin and drilling that hole completely through will make a receiver that will take full auto parts.
I have one of the PSA with 20" and another with 16". My 20" is A2 except for the upper receiver it is A4. At the time I got mine that was the only configuration PSA had. I got mine as separate upper and lower on both. Watched for sales and saved the 10% tax on complete firearms.
Colt also changed the trigger/hammer pin to a larger pin. Had one but it didn’t shoot well so I sold it. I built one using a 18” Wylde 1-8 twist and cut 5 shot touching
david czapla I owned a Colt like this one to and I sent it back to colt for accuracy issues, they sent it back saying “ it falls inside OUR accuracy parameters “ that and the crappy trigger was the reason I sold it. With the ammo I feed my Wylde I wonder if it would have shot better
@@Kodeeni Disappointing, I get much tighter groups out of my Marlin model 60, shooting at the same distance and target. Somebody suggested using a 62 grain ammo instead of 55 grain..?
I have the identical weapon. Doesn't shoot 5.56 worth a darn. Empty casing will get stuck in the chamber after about 10 rounds so only .223 with the 1 in 7 twist barrel. Identical to the M16A2 except only sermiauto instead of tri burst trigger and no bayonet lug.
i was issued a brand new fn a2 at fort jackson in 2013. after training and arrival at my all my units i still asked for an a2 instead of an m4. the longer sight picture made quals a lot easier.

Up until about a year ago I shot my A2 in iron sight US Service Rifle Competition, for about 20 years in fact. It was match conditioned and I earned the US Distinguished Rifleman Badge with it. I replaced the A2 upper recently with an A4 upper to permit me to compete in competition allowing a scope and discovered two things: first, I cannot yet shoot scores with the scope on par to irons and the detachable carry handle sight does not have enough elevation for 1000 yard competition unless the front sight is turned about 4 revs in the hole meaning just a stub of a post to get a consistent sight picture, which is difficult from a stubby post.
I was in the Army from 2001 to 2005 and was issued an M16A2 only in basic training. The Army went from the M16A2 to the M4. The Army never adopted the M16A4, the Marines did so how was Eric issued an M16A4 in Iraq if he was in the Army?
The Army still bought some A4s, just as the USMC had some M4s issued to some NCOs or officers. Just because a service adopts a weapon as standard issue, does not mean that is all that is issued. Look into the USMC's M16A5 project with VLTOR that was never type classified. And yet, there are pics of them being used out there.
i ended up with a '91ish HBAR, factory flat top upper...Colts fit and finish is very nice, the rifle is a tack driver with the heavy 20" barrel...Unfortunately, for those of us living in CT, all we can buy are "pre ban" ARs, so the prices are insane just for a stripped Colt lower.
Have a ‘91 model with a pristine bore and a GREAT shooter. IF you run the Serial number you can nail it down as to YEAR manufactured..no guessing. Mine also has the ‘clean’ tail on the BC and a the blocked/pinned DIAS.
Checkout the plug in the lower receiver between the rear takedown pin and the back trigger roll pin @1:21. This should be where the pin for the full-auto mechanism goes. The lower receiver in this area should be filled with blocks of metal, with one piece of metal sticking up far enough to prevent the use of a mil-spec bolt.

I was surprised when we came across ours . .22 kit included. I hear they are hard to find and pricy but mine was given to me. Mine doesnt say sporter though but has the match hbar
...and sadly in Colt infamous wisdom they will not make anymore AR-15s for the public. Sorry Colt, I am not gonna buy anything from Colt anymore. My 2012 Colt LE6920 AR-15 rifle is the last firearm I have bought from your company.
And that’s the reason they are stopping the sale of their long rifles. Many more ARs out there for sale at a much cheaper price. Competitively Colt can’t keep up. They decided to concentrate on pistols which are more profitable for their company.
@Richard Johnson Every AR lower I own, I assembled myself. I own many of them. I'm to the point where I can do it by memory alone. An AR upper is more tricky, I've only done one thus far. There is more to go wrong imho with the upper, so I want proper instruction for that. My upper will not be for duty usage as I'm not a professional...but it does work...

Next time I'm down in Georgia (my whole family is from Georgia but I grew up in Michigan) I'm definitely going to make a trip to Moss Pawn and Gun so I can remind you that Epstein didn't kill himself.
Love my Colt M4. I would prefer a longer barrel though.
I'm kicking my self in the ass for not doing a 20in build.
2wheeled Demon I’m here is South Africa, so I can’t customize an AR. At least I got a very nice stock standard LE6920.
@@glockparaastra At least you got one. We don't have that problem here in Texas👍🏼
beautiful rifle. love that basic look and love iron sights.
Real nice colt 👍🇺🇸clean as a whistle.
I carried a M249 primarily but had to qualify on a A2 annually. I'd love to have one of these for my collection.
“LE” colt guns after the sunset have full auto bolts, but a lower block that blocks an auto sear. Bayonet lug too 🤷🏻♂️
Love my A2 . Accuracy other ARs dream about
I was surprised when we came across ours . .22 kit included. I hear they are hard to find and pricy but mine was given to me. Mine doesnt say sporter though but has the match hbar
Nice shooting man. 2 pops and 28 dings
I got the A2 same era Colt but A1 lpwer and A2 stock. It's a transitfinal period rifle
Thank you!
A2 style rifle "classic"
Is this what getting old feels like?
Nice rifle and good shooting Eric
I carried the m16a1 in the 80's and they were being phased out as I was getting out. Oh and by the way... Epstien didn't kill himself.
Thanks Guys for video, see ya soon 👍
Ever think about using live targets?
lol
couple hog vids on the channel
@@947969 if Hog means what i think it does, and i hope it does, i cannot seem to find the video!
@@RekzysTheTitan just Google, "guys blowing huge hogs up."
@@xenonram i was hoping hog was another word for person. but ok.
Pretty sweet to see the trace when shooting out at 300
Loving the sound of the trigger reset
My Colt AR15 A2 Sporter 2 has a bayonet lug. Mid 80's version.
Target had hands up whole time .
Old colts!! FTW
...and sadly in Colt infamous wisdom they will not make anymore AR-15s for the public. Sorry Colt, I am not gonna buy anything from Colt anymore. My 2012 Colt LE6920 AR-15 rifle is the last firearm I have bought from your company.
All the more reason to get a BCM or similar.
An A2 complete upper is, and probably always will be, in my wish list :/
ChemistyStudent check out white oak armament they have awesome a2 complete uppers
I have a similar set up except mine in is 6.8 spc II. Love it
That good ol trigger reset.
