      That's great. One of my fave cards in the entire hobby is Gretzky's 2011-12 UD Canvas, or even better the 2015-16 signed buyback version of it #/5. It's a photo of him beating Mike Vernon with CGY, and the puck visible top-corner from behind the net.

    Great box! That Poitras is great. I've opened my tins and didn't hit Poitras, but I did get my other Bruins YG so I'm pretty happy.
    Have to love when mistakes happen and you get extra YG Canvases and a Clear Cut YG. I know people aren't going to be happy unless they hit Bedard but I don't understand how anyone could not be happy with a box like yours.
    Hope you have a great weekend! #Dryden

      I'm with you on that assessment. I'd be curious to know what percentage of "collectors" partake in group breaks just for the chase, only to post their hits on eBay to fund their break rebuys. For all the commerce, I don't even think ppl like having cards in their possession, as most images in life are now virtual. The very fact anyone can buy a mass produced Bedard posted ad nauseam on eBay or COMC, or trade it on ePack, devalues the card. The only cards with inherent value are the manufactured scarcity of (endless) low numbered parallels, or desirable RPAs in other products.

    • @ugghhhyoutubeisawful646
      @ugghhhyoutubeisawful646 9 месяцев назад +1

      yeah, all kinds of sad there. i live overseas and it is pretty expensive to send boxes here so when i visit home i grab a bunch and rip here just to put them up around one of the rooms in my place. half the 40-50 cards i have on the wall are prolly .50 canvas cards--i played a lot of puck and they are the ones that always seem to capture/remind me of real hockey. ppl need to put the cards out and enjoy.@@Fultoncards

    Man, that was a great box! Impossible to pull a 'profit' with the prices this high...but for ANY other year, this was a great box! #dryden

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards  9 месяцев назад

      True! If on average boxes represented a "profit" as opposed to a 75% devaluation upon box break (in non 23/24 years, not even 23/24), card companies would just post their cards directly on eBay. Instead, card companies put them in boxes for kids to gamble, with the house winning massively, like Vegas slot machines. There are a lot of misnomers in the hobby. Do we honestly think poor ppl in bomber jackets with booze on their breath midday, sitting at slot machines in Vegas, are "investing" or "pulling a profit"?

    • @mikeleonard8521
      @mikeleonard8521 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@Fultoncards I do love the gamble of opening cards and trying to PULL something that I'm excited for. There's nothing quite like the rush of getting the thing I'm chasing! My hope when I open is to pull at least enough value that if I don't pull what I am hoping for, I can sell it to either go towards another box purchase or just purchase a single outright. I enjoy the chase way more than just opening the single in an envelope I ordered from eBay.
      When I spend 200 on a box of SPA and pull a 3 dollar FWA, it feels like flat out theft by UD or like I'm just setting money on fire. It is NOT about the value pulled, but it is a consolation prize. In that instance, I don't care about the base or other inserts in that set.
      At $100-150 for a hobby box of series 1, I at least feel like I got some value from my pulls and know that risk/reward is more manageable. Probably a me problem but also know I am not alone!

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards  9 месяцев назад

      That's a very honest assessment. With social media and online breakers, the hobby isn't even about the cards anymore for most ppl. Sry for the long response. It's very physiological, related to our brain chemistry, just like gaming. I try to describe and emphasize the math, to counterbalance this. I'm sure ppl like Daniel Negreanu or Antonio Esfandiari play poker because they enjoy it. But, they win because they have put in their 10,000 hours, compute the math in real-time, and watch the film on their competition. They practice and strategize. Then they literally go to work. It is a profession to them. They learned the hard way not to be impulsive or guess. When they lose, they don't blame Vegas. Equally ppl eat a lot of unhealthy food and buy a lot of bad products at irrational price points. Yes, some companies produce unhealthy addictive food and products that don't represent good value. But, I for one am confused when ppl only underscore the supply side issues in a free market economy, in countries with a decent standard of living and way of life, due to this economy. So, I personally believe ppl are paying for the box break experience, as a sunk cost. And if the value is not there, then ppl should buy cheaper products, with less skin in the game, or do something wiser with their hard earned income. Me, I do it because I enjoy the process, notably the endless learning and the community aspects. I learned through finance and economics that high risk is low reward. If you invest in real estate near transportation and large caps with sound fundamentals, the gains are steady and certain. With cards, there are no gains. There are losses. Card companies, graders, group breakers, retailers do make profit. But, they are not gambling. They are banking on our gambling. And gambling emanates from an entertainment budget. It is a liability/loss not an asset. Had most consumers cared about value and the cards, they would simply purchase them directly on eBay in a soft market. And here with Bedard, most ppl are doing the opposite. Buying a card printed over 100,000 times at all-time consumer sentiment highs. I do find the psychology really interesting.

      @@Fultoncards I appreciate you taking the time to write all that up! I completely agree with your breakdown of all of that! The breaker side of the equation makes it very hard for an average consumer to compete so to speak and even have a viable chance at pulling a very cool card. I hope is to have a Conor bedard because he's a great player and not because of the investability. The investments are nice perk of course as well.
      I am also a pokémon and Lorcana player and opener. I'm finding a lot more joy in opening those products because I may get something worth a lot of money, but more than anything, I'm excited to pull something that completes the set or to pull something that's going to work great in my deck! The value is completely secondary for me there.
      When opening products, I try to break it down, not necessarily by my hit ratio or the value of my head but at my fun cost. I can open a box of pokémon and expect somewhere between 60 and $150 in value. And that box will have cost me 90 bucks. Comparatively, I can open that box of SPA I was talking about and pull a $3 auto. For pokémon, my phone cost is about 20 to 40% of the box value. In hockey, I find that my phone cost is very close to the full value of the box.
      For a while I was partaking in breaks on whatnot and RUclips and to the point that you made, I found that I was getting a huge amount of hits but they were all low caliber and I was essentially spending the cost of a box regularly and walking away with 1/32nd of the contents. (Or more depending on how many of the teams I purchased). But that drastic swing in my return on investment has pushed me away from breaking. The analysis that you and sports card analysis post help me be more confident in the purchases that I'm making. The Gambler in me sees a bounty for a one of one and thinks "that's doable" when the data says 'yes, but better odds getting struck by lightning'. Sorry for another lengthy message! Have a great night!

    • @Fultoncards
      @Fultoncards  9 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, that provides a ton of context, especially given that I am more of the D&D generation not Pokemon. Albeit, I was always more of a poker and spades player than D&D. I agree with both your reasoning and sentiment. In all honesty, given the softness and over saturation of eBay, there is no rational reason for anyone to enter breaks. But, ppl aren't really targeting cards to collect, they/we are seeking an endorphin rush. I just did a bit of math regarding someone mentioning the value of 23/24 UDS2 retail because they have an "outside chance" to hit a valuable Bedard YG Outburst. They would literally have to open 2,250 blasters to ensure they hit that card. At US $40 per blaster, that's is $90,000 for a (presently) $2,000 card. This defies any justification. Add to that that the card can devalue as it is not numbered, and we are talking complete insanity. So, I think we need to step back from our obsessions, and certainly stop using terms like "investment." Putting money in a garbage and setting it ablaze with lighter fluid is not an "investment." It's pathological. It's like holding ourselves up at gunpoint and our shadier self running off with months of rent or mortgage.
