This team goes as Gio Reyna goes. There’s a reason why the first halves of each game were so clean and free flowing. Him creating in the middle opens so much space and room for the 3 forwards up top.

That, and the fact that against Germany, we went back to a 433 and then returned to a 4213 after the 2 goals from Germnay gave Gregg a slap of realism and then against Ghana we just rested a lot of our main players after first half.

Keep in mind, this is with the worst coach in all of international soccer. Also, the biggest thing is having a playmaker, box to box, and anchor/crasher in the middle three. Musah and mckennie are both box to box which removes all of the creativity and makes it pulisic’s responsibility from the wing rather than a playmakers responsibility through the middle. Adams, mckennie, gio are the best three we’ve got.

As Gio Reyna goes, the USA goes. His ability to create at the 10 is everything to our team.

  • @mattmexor2882
    @mattmexor2882 Год назад +5

Reyna is a player that Berhalter needs because without Reyna his way of setting up the team to attack is almost entirely to vacate the box with the number 9 and attack down the sides of the field. To try to make it work, Pulisic would tuck far inside into areas of the field where he is less effective and the fullbacks would push up even against teams with a significant counter attacking threat. With Reyna as a playmaker there is a creative threat in the middle. From his club form, Malik Tillman looks like he should be capable of backing up at the position. Unfortunately he picked up an injury just before the international break and had to pull out of the camp, so we didn't get to see him there. No one else in the player pool is really capable of playing that role at a sufficient level.
By the way, it was Weah that won the penalty for the US, not Balogun.
You definitely didn't see the best of McKennie with Leeds. But he is a frustrating player. He is very skilled but it's like his brain switches off sometimes and he'll make loose errors. He also seems to be able to quite easily get out of shape (even overweight) and doesn't have the self-discipline to get himself back in top shape without consistent playing time. Lastly he doesn't trust himself with the ball sometimes and he'll try a quick flick, which he's good at, when he should receive the ball. These issues seem to be the type of things that are fixable, but he's 25 now and they are still hanging around in his game. As far as Leeds, it's easy to imagine that someone lacking self-discipline had trouble putting an A effort into the team when he signed there to play with Marsch and Adams and as soon as he arrived Marsch got fired and soon after that Adams got injured. Additionally he was then put in a double pivot as a replacement for Adams, which is not a good position for him. If it were he and Adams you likely would have seen a much better version of him.

Theres a couple minutes in the second half where Dest, Weah and Mckennie were just doing trick passes in Ghana’s half like the Harlem Globe trotters. It is emblematic of both the US and Ghana’s second half-no one was really in the mood for football anymore. I’m not saying the US missed sitters on purpose, but its probably impolite to beat someone 7 nil in a friendly. Still, that second half was the longest 45 minutes of my life.
Also, Mckennie is cooking in Serie A this season. He gave an interview where he said he spent the off season getting in shape, lost weight, and has been really instrumental in Juve’s squad. Great come back.

Gio is important, he has vision and tactical skill that are world class and he has shown that when plays for the national team, Pulisic has improved drastically on the defensive end, ever since moving to Italy, he’s been a stalwart defender(for a winger) always dropping back to assist in ball recovery and ball winning, and of course, he’s always a latent threat to the goalkeeper in attack, however he does need to be more decisive when in front of goal. Mckennie is good at setting up assists and tempo of the offense, he manipulates time to get those crazy, pin point accurate long passes, and if given the chance he’ll take his chances at scoring from long distance. Dest, if playing with confidence he has the skill to dribble past all 11 of the opposition’s players, he’s fast and if he can, he’ll go for the kill(the goal), the only thing Dest needs to hammer down is his defensive ability, I mean he’s good at staying on his mark, but the moment he needs to tackle, that’s where he struggles. Weah, man he gives Gareth Bale vibes, he also shares a physical resemblance to Bale, tall, long limbs, fast and good at getting past defenders, he just needs to tune up his passing in the final third when he’s looking for the assist. Aaronson, he has sooo much potential, he dribbles like Messi, very close center of gravity, ball practically sticks to his feet as he runs, but he needs to pass the ball in time or he gets dispossessed, he has a good free kick, if Pulisic can’t or won’t take it, Aaronson is a good option. Aantonie Robinson is always solid in the back, he’s strong, and fast, it’s hard to get past him, he needs to be more aware of his mark when off the ball. All in all, our US squad is looking like it’s shaping up, just needs a tune up and Gregg needs to finally settle on a solid formation and the starting 11, also, he needs to start playing his players to their strengths, rather than experiment with them indefinitely.

Gio Reyna is, at his best, the most talented footballer we've got.
The WC drama was terrible. I don't know all the details - not sure anyone does. I'm inclined to think he shares blame, but that the lion's share of the blame lies with Berhalter and Gio's parents.
On the subject of Berhalter, I defended him for a long time whilst the American soccer Mafia were calling for his head. I'm done with that. He plays dull, rigid, predictable football - punctuated by infrequent moments of inspiration. I was disappointed when he returned.

McKennie is good enough to start games at Juventus right now, he had a tough loan last year at Leeds but has always impressed in the USA shirt (Which seems to be a theme when the European players come home to the States, they always look better on the international stage than at their clubs for some reason).
As for Gio Reyna, he is the key to the 4-2-3-1 offense we've been running lately. Without his creative abilities the USA falls to a 4-3-3 which doesn't seem to create many good chances. Take a look at the USA v Germany game from this same international window. 1st half with Gio looked great, 2nd half without failed to really create anything.

I think a combination of injuries, manager favor, and lack of run of games at the same position were key to Pulisic's struggles at Chelsea.
When he got a run of games he was amazing. Considering he was key to their Champions League Trophy i wouldn't say he was a bust, but his impact really started to wane after Chelsea started to talent hoard.

To your question about Gio Reyna: he is *essential* to the US attack. In the first half against Germany, the US drew them to a draw and looked dangerous throughout. Against Ghana in the first half, 4 goals and complete domination. Reyna came off halftime in both matches and the US scored 0 total goals and gave up 2. He's the grease that makes the engine go.
To your question about McKennie, I get why those who only saw him at Leeds think he's garbage. He was total garbage there. But I think Marsch getting sacked like a week after his arrival was just totally deflating to him. And with Adams out and Brendan struggling, it was just all bad juju. He looks like a refreshed man at Juve this year.
The problems US need to solve now are 1) finding depth behind Puli/Balo/Weah/Gio (Tillman looks promising), 2) solidifying their CBs, 3) finding an Adams replacement (Johnny looked pretty good), and 4) overcoming the questionable tactics of their manager.

For me, the thing with Reyna was over at the World Cup, it was a problem and then the squad and coaches handled it and moved on. But then he got dragged back into by his parents and coach. I think his parents acted horribly, and that Berhalter did a few things he should've known better than to do. But I think at this point, if Berhalter and Reyna can work together, there is no reason not to. Especially because I think Reyna's skill set and ability unlocks another dimension in the USMNT. Like I really like the dynamic of the midfield trio of Musah, Mckennie, and Adams, but I think that at times it isn't dynamic enough and that if you bring Reyna in for either Musah or McKennie, then the US becomes much more dangerous. Of course, if Adams is never available again, I think a midfield of Musah, McKennie, and Reyna is a great option.

Chelsea is managed poorly. Under three managers this past season everyone was horrible. They have a history of giving up on talented players and those players making a name for themselves elsewhere.
Those that say he was always injured have a bit of bias and probably didn’t watch . There were players who were injured more and don’t have that “injury prone” label to them. Fact is his last two years at Chelsea, he was injury free for 18+ months, yet players who continued to play garbage (Mount, Havertz, Sterling) got more playing time. Even when Pulisic was the better option statistically. And if he did play it was at wingback. But no coincidence he has started practically every game at Milan since pre season and is one of if not the most influential player on the squad.

What happened afterwards with his parents and Berhalter was all their fault and shouldn't reflect on Gio.
