Family history fact: My nonna (Italian grandmother) knew Tito Gobbi. She was from Bassano del Grappa, Veneto, where my father was born. As a teenaged girl, her job was to "deliver milk to the house of a Signor Gobbi, who was an opera singer. He was very nice."
I heard Bryn Terfel sing this on Radio 3 just the other day. I didn't previously know the aria so I had my socks blown clean off, I knew that I had just come across something hugely significant. I bought the CDs off eBay, stupidly cheap for Gheorghiou/Alagna. On looking up the translation of the libretto I came across this film and remembered that my old mum liked Tito Gobbi. I now see why. Bloody hell! It's a low-res, black and white, so-so sound recording made when I was 3 and if I had any hair left on my head it would be standing up along with that on my arms and legs. Bloody hell! What I would give to see this man sing this aria.
This, this is Scarpia: menacing, elegant, evil, so controlled and powerful with the perfect voice. Even how he pronounces his vowels. I can think of no other singer who is so completely this character. Tosca, beware. He will nest
I get chills every time I listen to him sing this. Even better when there is film. He's such a good actor you can hear his evil in the sound of his voice, but when you get the visuals. Brrrr! Amazing!
Magnificent acting and singing, especially when he realizes the lustful thoughts are not appropriate for such a solemn religious experience. Of course, he blames Tosca, "Tosca, mi fai dimenticare il Dio"!. Gobbi is one of the greats. When he and Maria Callas sung together in Tosca, it was spectacular.
My favorite scarpia is gabriel bacquier (where he sings in french). The vowels here are way too open for my liking, and a lot of the pitches are off by a notable margin. I like his acting a lot. This is just my opinion.
@@xxsaruman82xx87 When singing lighter roles like Figaro his high register seemed OK but in heavier roles no. I have not found any live recording of il Trovatore sung by him. Maybe he did not sing this in live performance. That is a wise choice.
1 Gobbi = 50 Raimondi = 50 Tezier. Tezier is very, very throaty and Raimondi is woofy and constricted. Gobbi sings with great technique. Gobbi is so much better than both x 50

GRANDISSIMO!!!
Claudio Persi - You actually got to see him in person? He truly was Scarpia, wasn't he? Who played Tosca and Mario?
TITO= Scarpia, Rigoletto, Yago, semplicemente UNICO.

In 1958 his singing was brilliant but by 1964 he had totally perfected the character of the evil Scarpia. There has been no-one better since.
Che livello! Fa venire i brividi. Una delle arie più sinistre e inquietanti.

Tito Gobbi, mi fai dimenticare Iddio 💖
He was touched with greatness. Only Christopher Robson matched his acting ability, and only Maria Callas his performing charisma.

What an actor!
Leggendario!
This...this is Scarpia.
!!!!!assolutamente genial!!!!!!!
spettacolare !!
Il barone Scarpia per eccellenza
Perfect character acting - brilliant scarpia
My Father Loved him and so do I
Glorious singing and acting. The ultimate Scarpia, unsurpassed. Few come close to him, but there are some. Bravissimo, maestro.
Taddei, Colombo, Bastianini, Guelfi, London are my favourites, but my favourite of all is Gobbi!
Fantastiche!!
another incredibly great peformance - great Tito Gobbi
Stunning 👏
Gobbi mi fai dimenticare Iddio...
MERAVIGLIOSO SCARPIA,RIGOLETTO JAGO ECC...GRAZIE PER AVERLI POSTATI SI VEDONO PIRE MOLTO BENE!!

Praticamente insuperabile..Puccini stesso rimarrebbe stupefatto
Wow interpretazione unica
THrilling...
In questo ruolo non ha rivali
Lui era Scarpia

From where this clip comes from? 😊

A great man of the theater but FAR from a great singer. (And yes I heard his Scarpia twice in the house.)
I think he was a great singer, but he did not have a great voice.
XxSaruman82xX Cleverly put.
@@xxsaruman82xx87 He did not have a great voice, but he knew how to become a great singer because he knew how to interpret the music and the roles.
@Yan Lee Exactly! His technique was great, though. Lots of squillo in his voice. Just not great high notes.

Where is the cunning legato? So ungraceful, uncharacteristic of Mr. Gobbi.
dannato Scarpia, interpretato dal baritono dei baritoni.

I prefer Ruggero Raimondi and Ludovic Tézier

No non mi convince. Ho ascoltate versioni nettamente migliori,
Milnes su tutti.
Sorry, but I do not like his voice at all. Bye.
You should be sorry
