Here's what some icons have to say about the book!!!
Ice-T: "Respect to Soren Baker for documenting the history of gangster rap in these pages. Some hate it. Some love it. But you can’t deny its brutal, hardcore honesty."
The D.O.C.: "History has so often been written by the victors, that you very rarely ever get the real story behind anything. So it’s really important to hear from the people that were there, which is exactly what Soren Baker shares in this book. He writes about it and he’s honest about it."
Xzibit: "Hip-hop changed the world. Gangster rap changed the narrative, and then changed the world again. Soren Baker has been a very integral part of documenting hip-hop on the West Coast for as long as I can remember. I don’t think anybody is more qualified to write this book."
Leslie “Big Lez” Segar: "Soren Baker has changed the perspective of gangster rap by putting his pen to paper. He has given hip-hop power, proven its potential, and made non-believers contemplate all of its possibilities. The truth in his writing leaves no stone unturned, something he's done again with The History of Gangster Rap. Soren doesn’t just champion hip-hop. He also reveals its flaws and its truths."

Soren you hit another home run bringing in Shan. Super dope interview. Love the fact that you bring in my eras MC's they cannot be forgotten they played a major part in this thing called hip hop!
We're glad you enjoyed the interview, Xxxx Big Rich. We're happy to have #SorenBaker on the team. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
I miss the days when MC's tried to sound different. Today, most sound like they're trying to make the same song
We hear you, Powerful. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
It's been like that for a long time now. It started in the 90s & has gotten worse over time. Capitalism ruined Rap music.
That's because they are. Dudes are just trying to make money, they don't care about creativity. Plus the labels control everything now. I was just say yesterday, biting was the worse thing any rapper could do.
@@Charles-tt3dr you know your hip-hop. 😊
@@coachrobinson9958 Thanks!! I've been listening to Rap/Hip-Hop music since the late 1970s. It only took a little over 10 years for the genre to be bastardized after the big labels made the big move to take over & socially engineer Rap fans. I predicted back in 91 which is 30 years ago that it would get to this point. Especially after "Gangta Rap" started to become the norm.
Marley Mal & Dr. Dre both wanted to changed the way Rakim rhythm's but i'm glad Rakim didn't listen to them. Now he's the God MC!!!! Take a stand
Great point, Ephriam Price. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
STRAIGHT UP!!!!!!!!
My big brother Shan. He is one of a kind. Sets his own trend 📈. Great dad, person and has a mindset that's genuine. Love the fact he shares his life lessons to other's. To me that's pure genuine knowledge....of self and concern for others.. priceless!!!!!!!🙏🏽🎶 We need a much longer interview with Shan.
The blessed 1
We hear you, KMC#1 STEELERS. Here's Part 1 of our MC Shan interview, ruclips.net/video/LY4m78oOaFo/видео.html. Check it out & let us know what you think. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
True, Cool C did sounds exactly like Shan on "Juice Crew Diss". Shan could clown CC about getting locked up on a murder charge but Shan got locked up for drug abuse, touche'. Shouts to West Philly and the Goodman family and shouts to Queens, NYC.
We hear you, ReiMourr Power. Thanks as always for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Yeah, I caught that too and that was foul. Shan still acts like he's on something IMO and he's kinda delusional as to how ill he was as an artists. KRS-One was/is a way better lyricist and overall artists than he ever was and there are many more that I can name that were better from his era.
That was a foul shot. The big bro got death penalty and u was/and is a addict. In Raekwon voice peace to philly
Philly stand up.
#WESTPHILLY
Marley Marl, said pretty much the same thing in Source Magazine, back in the day. He heard Rakim, and laughed his ass off at how slow and laid back he rhymed. Marley said he kept telling Rakim, to "wake up" and put some more energy into it. Marley also admitted that he was laughing at the future of Hip Hop and didn't even know it.
Indeed, JiveGray. That's wild. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Marley also said on drink champs that he knew Big Daddy Kane was coming
Mantronix, MC Shan/ Marley, BDP, LL, Eric B. and Rakim, Steady B. Justice, T La Rock, Boogie Boyz, Fat Boys, Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince! Ghetto Boys, Ice T Just to name a few. Man them were the good ole days!.

THE LEGENDARY MC SHAN!!!!!!! Beautiful
Very, TheSstretch68. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Shan is that wild uncle that your parents have to tell to take his weed smoking outside.
Comedy, Juan Carro. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
The reason Pop Art created a rival for Shan with Cool C is because they had success with Shante's diss record, and they had issues with Fly Ty & Marley who they tried to "gangster" into an agreement. When it didn't work the Goodman's (Pop Art) created their own stars (Cool C Steady B The Youngstas) from family members and neighbors.
Salute MC Shan... Mad nice to see Beat Bitter talked about. Always got time for MC Shan. True legend amongst us old school b-boys. RESPECT🔥🔥🔥💯👊🇬🇧
All day, stet88. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
MC Shan, Rakim, Steady B & Cool C all 👑s & legends!!

Y'all laughed at The R? Shan & Marley was some confident dudes, because when i 1st heard The R 35 years ago i was blown away...
Yeah, Charles 91771. That's wild. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
I always liked Shan. He always was trying to pave his own way with no label help. He’s real a.f.
He's incredible, John Carbone. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
@@UniqueAccessEnt not to mention he really got f’ed by the industry. He left some gems for us tho 💯. Great content. I watch every show. Born in 77 so I grew up in this Thx for the videos 👊🏼

MC Shan recording from 1985 to ......
MC Shan is one of the most underated Poetic MC's of all times ... My nick name for him is Mr First .He was the first to do a smooth flow minus the screaming when he first appeared on the records called Marly Scratch and Cuts So Fresh in 1985. MC Shan was also the first MC to diss LL Cool J on "Beat Biter". To which Def jam ordered LL Cool J not to respond. He was the first to make a diss record calling the opposition by the actual name in his diss record against LL Cool J . He was almost unarguably the first to drop lyrics inspired from the lessons of the five percent nation, this is displayed in the rhymes, he did against L Cool J on his record called Beat Biter. He was the first to make a classic hip hop love blues ballad in "Left Me Lonely ". He was the first to metaphor a drug into a woman in Classic stand alone single "Cocaine" 1986. He was first to make a bonafide classic hit single with a song for his hood in the "Bridge" . He was the first to rock a particular type of multi syllabic flow while taking Hip Hop to Syfy on the single " MC Space" off the Down By Law album .
Shan was also the first to do a great hip hop anthem in the song called "Living In The World of Hip Hop ".
On his second album He was the first to verbally make a record scratch style with his word in the middle of his flow in the song "Words To My Freestyle". The first Prince of Rap who didn't have to scream his lyrics on record. He is Mr First....
Oh yeah his second album was actually better than his first .......
We hear you, Lord Godspeed. MC Shan is incredible & highly underrated. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
@@UniqueAccessEnt Welcome brother keep up the good work
you could say he Pioneered This....
I met shan in 95 as a kid wit my pops he's from queensbridge shan had his motor bike at that time crazy memory man respect to shan
That's a great memory, Darkagez77 jefferson. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
I don’t care what nobody say MC Shan was the Man Back in the Days
@ geeman36 Yo , I can't even front I bought his debut album on cassette back in the day but I'm just not with that reckless remark he said about COOL-C doing life in prison and then laughing about it. That's foul ! It's not cool to kick a man that's already down , YOU FEEL ME !
@@ktoescos He was out of pocket for that
M.C.. Shan is one of the most underrated rappers ever!
For sure, @tennaj1367. Thanks as always for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
I still think Steady B's music was FIRE🔥🔥🔥
Lawerence Goodman and DJ Tat Money were on some other stuff with those production skills.
Steady B best work Albums Bring the Beat Back 1986Whats My Name 1987 Let the Hustlers Play 1988 and Going Steady 1989......
What did Shan do?? Besides Down By Law and Born To Be Wild??
Philly had thier own sound the Hilltop Hustlers.
Dont forget Three Times Dope either!!
Sad Steady B did a crime though!!
We love Steady B & Cool C too, Ed Baiza. Philadelphia had some great artists in that era. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Yes indeed! Philly had great artists!
@ Ed Baiza CAN'T FORGET ABOUT ALL THE DOPE PHILLY D.J.'s EITHER !
Cool C sounded too much like Mc Shan..😎✌✊
Shoutout to MC Shan! Great look Soren.
Much appreciated, Michael Steve. We're glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
HEADS CAN SAY WHAT THEY WANT WITHOUT M.C. SHAN THERE WOULD NOT BE KRS-ONE..BDP...MARLEY...NAS...NOR QUEENSBRIDGE..PERIOD!!!!
I argue with cats all Day on this subject . I’m 50 and from the Bronx and we all rocked Shan back in the day . Listen to I help pioneer this he’s a pure lyricist . One of the first to be ion a movie soundtrack . He did feed the world for Colors . One of the first to do a conscious rap . One of the first to do a diss rap Beat Biter(LLcool J) , Kill that noise ( KrS-1)He did the joint about Martin Luther king. One of the first to do a live song rap with a R@B singer check left me lonely . I think his appearance throws everybody off . Last I saw he was Spinning at clubs in ATL.
@@jsmith3692 YOU ALREADY KNOW BRO...YOU HIP-HOP!! HINDSIGHT 2021....YOU CANNOT SAY SHAN WITHOUT KRS-ONE NOR KRS-ONE WITHOUT SHAN...IT IS SYNONYMOUS. PLUS SHAN IS TRUE BLUE!!!!

One of the most underrated EMCEE EVER. That was a great point Soren.
We're glad you enjoyed it, IAmKingdomRock. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Good stuff, bruh. 😊
Philly back in the mid 80's, I'd say till 86, had the baddest / best Dj's around.
Thank you Soren for another banger. A shout out to Unique Access as well.
We're glad you enjoyed it, NiteRida. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt, as always.
Shan what a great voice of pure raw 80's classic ish. I wish Shan had been on the Symphony, would have been great.
Yeah, Doctor VonBrown. That would have been magical. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Still a shame how the Steady B and Cool C legacy ended, and so soon.
Not the way Philly pioneers should be remembered, but at least they ain't forgotten.
I'm from ny and philly was definitely down with the program. Cash Money, JJ, Dj Rasheen... too many to name. Respect.
Believe me das bad!
@@fkutb I'm in Queens. Philly ain't had too much luck in hip-hop and rarely get their shine, but I always give credit where it's due. ScHoolly D, C.E.B, Jazzy Jeff, The Roots. All too underrated.
Agreed on all fronts, Defnote88. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.

My first LP I ever bout was Down By Law
Nice, Bryan Grissett. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Will be impressed if you can get an interview with Spoonie Gee.
or even better Schooly D
@@tonytuffers yeh that would be awesome also, I think Spoonie more elusive though, never ever seen him interviewed. Edit just found a couple of clips but not much.
Fresh!!!!
L himself admitted out of his own mouth that he got that beat from Shan. And we know L acknowledges very few other Emcees as influences. He acknowledges Mikey D, and he acknowledges Shan about that beat. He should acknowledge Kool Moe Dee, but he won't. They're all legends though.
Word. And as I said above: Shan may 'clown' Cool C on his murder charge though he should chill since no one clowned Shan about his admitted drug abuse problems. Salutes to West Philly, Cool C and the Goodmans; salutes to the Queens, NYC and the Juice Crew.
@Jayo Delaware I'm just saying, that was big of L to acknowledge Shan and Marley's influence contributing to his success indirectly. It's rare for superstar emcees to be that forthcoming. There's a fear that it you do that, cats will try to "play you".
All legends indeed, king esseen. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
All deserve much respect for what they did for the music, ReiMourr Power. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt, as always.
LL Cool J produced & co-produced a lot of his own material, Jayo Delaware. Thanks for watching & supporting #UniqueAccessEnt.
Correction........Cool C dissed the juice crew, because the juice crew started out on a Philly record lable, yet never gave respect to Philly for getting their start.......Its ok....Philly took over Battle Rap and Turntablism......The best NYC dudes sound like Philly.
Another knockout, knowledgeable interview.Great work Soren.U should get Antoinette (reminds me of a female Rakim )
