- Francis Lai was a French composer well-known for his film scores. In 1970 he won the Oscar for his music in the movie this theme is from, Love Story (Best Music, Original Score), as well as the Golden Globe award.
He was extremely prolific and over his 40-year career he wrote over 600 songs and composed music for over 100 films. He was also an accompanist for Édith Piaf and composed songs for her.
It is in the movie Love Story (which got it from the book it was based on) that the famous line, "Love means never having to say you're sorry" comes from.
I tried very hard to work on playing this song at a suitable pace. At first I was playing it much too fast, and then I worked on it very slowly, and made a video that was so slow that it was too slow. It was also very steady. This performance is perhaps a little too fast, but much more relaxed and slower than I had been playing it. Unfortunately I do think I speed up as I go, especially after the long run at 1:50 (my favorite part). I will keep working on my pacing.

You played it beautifully, Leander. Thank you! ❤️
Leander, it was beautiful and thanks for doing it.❤❤
You know many people have sung this including me. Mind you when I did it I didn't have all the cords you had but it was close and if you listen to Andy Williams he sang it to the speed at which I played it and you did it very nicely I couldn't have asked for a nicer speed. WELL DONE! Even I have to work on things when I make a film and it bothers me that it takes like more than 100 tries to get it right so never feel bad. LOL, I do for myself as it takes me all day and sometimes 3 days. But that is what it takes when you love music as much as both of us do. But let me tell you the artist always knows best you are the ARTIST HERE! I still say BRAVO!
Thatwas perfect
Thanks for the history. Do you ever watch how other people play before you decide how you want to play?
I must say of all your performances, I love this one the most, good show young man.
Wow!
Beautiful!! I love the expression in your rendition.
What a great way to start the day watching and listening to you play
Just beautiful! Love it💜
Mr.LEANDER.....Very nice selection and beautifully played
Thank you Leander for this wonderful rendition of the Theme from love story. You always play with a passion and pride.
You are so hard-working and delight many people almost every other day with a great piece of music. I thank you very much and appreciate your talent.
Magnifique !
Sitting here playing my guitar, when this pops up....and I stop playing to listen...so well done, young man...
Thank you very much. That is very nice of you to say to me.

@@jaygee999 thank you I am glad you always like the songs I play
Vary well done Leander, beautiful song choice. 💙
Beautiful Leander 🙏🇬🇧
That's another good one Leander! And I like the way you tell us in the notes how you have been working on this, especially on the pace. That shows commitment to what you are doing.
Leander 👏👏I loved it. Just beautiful. Amazing!
Leander that was beautiful.
Leander, this makes me think of when my wife and I saw the movie. We got married about the time it came out. We had 46 years married, and then she passed on. We loved music, and we both played piano. I played accordion 2 years; 5 years studying piano and 2 years pipe organ. You are keeping the tempo better and feeling the music better, too.
Happy Valentine's Day ❤❤
Just beautiful❤ Thank you and Happy Valentine's day to you!
❤
Leander that was Beautiful!! I've missed hearing you the last couple of days
Glad to h er it again and well played Thanks for playing some almost everyday you are a cool kid with tons of talent.
That was nice Leander and I was able to switch off from everyday life for a moment 🤗🌟 😊 !!!
Outstanding job! You are very versatile!
Gosh, Leander, you played that beautiful song just beautifully. Thinking back to the movie, this 'take' seemed to me to be the right pace, your self-judgement is great. And even in this somewhat somber song, you still give us your delightful smiles! Your music makes my day! Thank you a million times! God bless, 🙏 and hugs 🤗, Jerry
Hi Leander, such a beautiful song and played masterfully ❤️ Thank you for sharing your beautiful gift with the world 🌎 Since it’s the month of love you might consider I Will Always Love You and Somewhere My Love ‼️ I’m still looking forward to your rendition of Pinetop Boogie ❤️ it’s my favorite boogie Woogie 😊 Clarence Smith from Alabama wrote and played this song. Joann Castle use to play this song and you can find her playing it and The Piano Rolls Blues on RUclips 😎 Hope you and your family have a great week ‼️ from your friends in Mississippi ‼️👍👋
In the movie that theme is played at many different speeds throughout & sounds great at all of them.
That was great
Hey, Leander. You did a very nice job on a song that is almost as old as me! I have heard that melody at various times throughout my life, and I think you got the tempo very close to the original speed. The song is associated with sadness, and the slowness of it helps to evoke that emotion. I don't remember ever watching the movie Love Story since I'm more of a sci-fi and action/adventure fan, but the song has been performed a lot of times outside of the context of the movie. Thank you for sharing it with us here on YT.
Very beautiful
Excellent performance.
Happy Valentine's Day to you too. You bring Valentine's Day often. Thank you. I wonder how you were gifted such quick and clever fingers by the Creator. And that genuine smile, even while playing. I have seen engineers who can't walk with gum in their mouths. I hope you still have time to play after school and playing. Oscar, from the other side of the world
Leander, you are astounding! I love this song and you played it so well. It was perfection. Thank you!
LEANDER!!!! greetings from England.
I saw this film 50years back...what a joy to hear you playing it.
Kev
Absolutely beautiful. I love the smiles you give me!
I didn't know about the connection between the composer of Love Story and my favorite French singer, Edith Piaf. Nice job on the song-. Thanks for playing it.
This is a beautiful Piece of music! Well Played!
Beautifully played. That new haircut makes you look older! We are watching you grow up before our eyes!
Beautiful rendition of the Love Story theme. I would like to request the theme from the film Schindler´s List composed by John Williams. Thank you for your music, you make the world a better and happier place !
Thank you for sharing!!!!!!!! always beautiful~~~~~always brings me Joy!!!!!❤❤❤❤❤
Superb rendition of a very sad movie theme! The Italian movie, 'The Last Snows Of Spring' (1973) is even sadder. Don't watch any clips from the ending unless you want to be melancholy for weeks!
Wow! That was beautiful, Leander! I see you've worked on that left hand. I know there are pieces out there that have the melody written for the left hand but I don't know any off the top of my head. Look around and you will find them.
Thanks for sharing your journey. I'm looking forward to your next adventure.
A hauntingly beautiful piece, played beautifully.
📻🙂
I am very glad that you liked it.
Beautiful Leander! Thank you❤️🙏🏻
very sweet music Love Story, thank you
This boy - genius! Gift from Skies!
What a lovely gift, Leander. You played it beautifully, the pace was perfect. This brought back memories. I remember being in the theatre as a teenager, watching the movie, and crying at the end. Every time I would hear the song, I would tear up. Almost 60 years later, I still become emotional. Thank you so much, thank you for your dedicated effort to bring a bittersweet moment to us. And thank you for the history, as always. You are the best Valentine! ❤❤❤
Grazie infinite, mio meraviglioso angioletto ,vederti è un piacere immenso! Suoni con la tua anima pura e innocente !Gesù ti sia sempre accanto! Un abbraccio affettuoso! Sicilia, Miriana 10 febbraio 2025
bravo
I have sheet music for that, but haven't played it for decades. Now, I'm going to dig it out! Maybe, someday, you'll see the movie (not yet, you don't need THAT romance, at your age!) and hear how the tempo goes. Still, you did well, and I'm sure we all enjoyed it very much! Thanks! 🎶🎵🎶
so beautiful,thanks.
Wow this kid is now almost as good as me-or perhaps already even better, yet I’ve played the piano for over 15 years!
Lovely, now guess what I'll be watching for Valentines Day. 💞💞💞
Just beautiful!
You not only have a great natural talent, you made the notes of this piece beautiful. 🤗

Leander, that was really beautiful! Thank you for giving us such great joy with your music! 🇩🇪❤️🎈😀
Schicksalsmelodie... 😌
That was a very thoughtful rendition. Well done, Leander.
Lovely, Leander. I turned 12 in 1970 and remember this from the radio, though I never saw the film.
Leander,Leander.... Where do I begin to tell the story😊 Wow.... What an amazing young talent you are Wow.... You played that so beautifully it was magnificent. Your future is so bright!.... Never stop learning never stop giving... Thank you so much...

truly excellent!
One of your best yet Leander!! So lovely I'm sitting here crying. ☺️
That was really very beautiful. A lovely melody and you did a great job playing it
Such a beautiful song despite it's melancholic tune. You played it so pleasantly and your smile always brightens the mood. Wonderful job!
That's great Leander. I saw that when I was a senior in highschool. Thanks again for your enthusiasm and the joy on your face. I'd be proud to call you my grandson?
that was super nice
I do not feel like this was too fast. This is the speed I would play it (not that I'm an authority on how music should be played) but I was also recently listening to it on my mp3 player as it was a hit in the UK in the 70s when the movie came out. I cant remember who it is who sang it. You played it beautifully and I think almost around the same tempo of the one I listened to. Well done Leander. You are a gift to the world of music!
This is one I played in a high school talent show, accompanied by my friend on her flute. The version I played was very nearly the same as yours, except for the fancy flourishes you mentioned you liked. Makes me want to sit down and play again. Thank you.
Leander, it is so lovely to listen to you play.
Great work Leander!
Thank you again. Great as always.
❤❤❤
I associate Mozart Piano Concerto 21, with this song, as it was the music for a movie (Elvira Madigan) that played at about the same time, the advertising for both getting mixed in my mind I was too young to see the movies but quite clearly remember the music from the ads
Wow! Very very nice!
Thank you, I am glad you think it is very nice
That was absolutely beautiful! Thank you for sharing. You are amazing.
Oh Leander, how special and how enchanting ❤️ Happy Valentine’s Day ❤️❤️
Wow! That was stunningly beautiful, Leander! I loved it!
Beautiful 🌷 😍
Thanks Leander. This brought back memories from the movie I saw when I was young. I had almost forgotten the music. Now I will try to see the movie again.🙂
Thank you! I just watched this movie two days ago. Good timing Leander! You are the best. Enjoying your talent and especially your heart. ❤❤❤️ 🎹
i haven't heard this piece for so long. I used to sing it at my performances. Why is some of the music is so sad?
