My PL-5 turntable is now fixed thanks to your video and some Deoxit D5 sprayed in the pitch control pot. It means a lot to me because I got this turntable as a high school graduation gift in 1982 from my parents. Thank you very much! Your video encouraged me to (finaly) put in order the servo of my 40+ years old PL-320. Same problem, same solution. Most of the instructions fit PL-320 at 100%! Some of my friends will also be grateful because I need PL-320 to digitalise some vinyl records of their youth. As PL-320 seems to be mechanicaly simpler than PL-7 (less buttons), I neglected your instructions to properly set the arm moving mechanism. So, right now, my PL-320 preforms the arm retract but does not switch off. In fact it does, but than it switches on again... So, I'll have to redo the exercise.

Got it by myself! In fact it is simple: with power off you perform a manually driven retract until final stage, when the handle lands on the hook. I missed that message following yout video yesterday, sorry. In fact, to do that you do not need to dissamble/reassemble anything. My PL - 320 TT is now completely back in the shape, as new!
Hey guys! In case anyone is having issue getting the PU cord strain relief undone, it's designed to be taken off with a pair of pliers. You need to squeeze the little tab and shake till it comes off. Unfortunately depending on the pliers you use you may damage the plastic a little bit.

Thanks a lot for the video! I just used it to give my PL-4 a thorough treatment. I wish there would be a follow-up video concerning oiling and lubrication of the various mechanical parts, including cue lever and spindle. My TT has been demonstrating more Wow & Flutter lately, and I think i managed to lubricate it correctly and minimize the effect. I'm still not a 100% sure i did all i could... In any case, this video has been a HUGE help. Thanks for that!

Easiest way to remove the strain relief is with what's called a button popper for automotive use. Took about 10 seconds and a lot less chance of damage. I picked up one of these today and used your video to go through it. It was a dirty mess when I started and tonight it's fully functional and a lot cleaner. AK is the best.
You're a lifesaver! I've been trying to refurbish my parents' old turntable and hit this damn speed problem. I had to take the motor all the way off since I don't have a screwdriver skinny enough to fit through the adjustment holes, and turns out it slips back into place as easily as the rest of the parts. Great engineering for something supposedly not user serviceable ;)
I just wanted to say thanks! I have a PL 730, same line as the PL 7 with the same speed issue. I was never able to locate that teardown document and getting the cover off was a conundrum. You saved me some tears!
Thanks for the video, just picked up a PL4 at garage sale for my son, and only issue was unstable speed and fine tuning dial all over the place. The instructions were perfect and now very stable speed and in perfect operating condition. I have always preferred manual turntables with auto return. Thanks again.
Thanks Jim. I followed your tutorial when my PL-4 was running too slow and after some deoxit and use of the adjustment screws I was able to get the 33 and 45 almost dead on!
Jim, I went through your excellent video on my "new" PL-7. I did remove the motor board with the two speed adjustment pots for 33 and 45 rpm. I unscrewed the three screws holding it down, and unplugged the board , and this allowed me to apply the DeoxID properly. I found that setting the distance of the control pin from the edge of the plinth really helped, adjusting to a distance of 90 mm. from the edge did the trick. I was unable to get that little rubber stopper back inside the back end of the tonearm, so I will make do without for now, it seems more aesthetic than useful. Thank you very much more this tutorial! THANK YOU for helping me repair my PL-5 from 1982! Now that it works I am handing it down to my son in college who thinks this turntable is "vintage and cool". I have the matching SX-6 receiver too. Spraying CRC QD on my speed control wheel " pot" and on the speed screw holes under the base has her running at a steady speed now. Note: Try adjusting the speed screws through the service holes underneath (by the index finger joint 36:20 )first because you don't have to disassemble anything. My PL-5 was also stuck in an auto- on and off and restart loop. I cleaned the contacts inside and oiled the sliding parts. It works now. Maybe it was a contact on top of that huge plastic gear next to the spindle motor was hanging or it was some lever that needed cleaning. Or else it was the "tricky part" at 28:05 The lever attached to the start button has to be on the right side of the "pin" when you mate the top and bottom halves. I just manually turned the motor and cleaned gears and lever and oiled until the tone arm finally behaved correctly.
Just letting you know this is the second time I have had to use your video. You did a great job. I am mechanically inclined and needed to know how to take it apart. Your explanation was simple and to the point...... Kudos.. well done....

Thanks for the disassembly video! Pioneer PL-7 I must try to clean it all better and adjust when the tone arm sets down on the record. The arm will keep cycling also and may need more cleaning. My other problem is the pin you had so much trouble aligning. The rubber cover is in pieces. So I guess piece of wire insulation will do if I can find that size. Kinda like the Dual turntables and their Steuerpimpel ..LOL!
There are far better turntables out there, but this one is still my absolute favorite. I've owned 2 PL-5s and I have NEVER seen a dust cover that pristine.
Sure wish the internet was available when i was trying to resolve similar issues with my PL-4, I finally sacrificed it to the turntable gods and bought a new one. I liked the PL-4 better than the new Kenwood I had purchased.
Hi I just got a pioneer pl 320 with tone arm cables cutted and I am stuck how to open the tone arm and replace the cables that goes from headshell to pcb. I couldn't find any tutorial on line. can you help me? maybe I can send some pics privatly if you don't mind. thanks for your help
Brilliant Video . . . I'd recommend considering not using DeOxit ( at 20:15 of video) but rather CRC instead . . . Deoxit can be destructive to Pots and Boards generally although there are some variants (very expensive) that can be less destructive.
I am getting a PL-4 tomorrow that may need me to refurb it. I have not taken apart a turntable since I was 10 or 12 (so 30+ years) But I repair other electronics as a hobbyist, so I should be good. I have seen that sort of strain relief on other electronics - they are pressure fit and a real pain!

Well, I got it, and surprisingly the speed on it is pretty rock solid. The cut button and auto-return do not work, but that does not render it useless. Once I get a new cartridge for it, I am going to disassemble, inspect and clean everything - I will see about the mechanical issues then and keep you posted!
As I recall it took a fair bit of persuasion with a small screwdriver. There are a few other RUclips videos showing repairs on the PL4/5/7 models that might help you more.
Deoxit is an electronics cleaner. D5 is recommended for switches and potentiometers, while F5 is recommended for fader controls where some extra lubrication is desired.
I must have a bad motor? When my PL-5 came to me it rotated counter-clockwise and when it would run clockwise (it doesn’t move in that direction at all at the moment), it looked like about 120RPM. I followed your steps but no change. Start button doesn’t work either. If anyone has ever brought one with these symptoms back to life I’d love to hear how. love your video on this teardown and cleaning. I found the PL-5 a few years back and i think i even followed the guide you have there. Still had the same issue. The motor board actually comes out pretty easily so you can clean (or in my case replace) the fine adjustments for the motor, even replacing the caps for safe measure. I was still having problems with the speed fluctuations and removed the pitch control pot and speed switch. I opened up the speed pot and cleaned it out thoroughly and found that the remaining issue was the speed switch. I opened that up (not for the faint of heart) and found all the black oxidation is hiding in there. Put it all back together and it doesn't happen as much as it used to. I'm at the point where I think i just need to find a drop in replacement for that speed selector switch. Mine is actually made by ALPS. Any chance you know of a modern day drop in part for that?

I'll check when I get home, but what I recall from last night was that that area in which you would normally see the disk spinning lights up as your did in the video, but there is no spinning. I was thrilled to at least have the thing opened up, so I left it at that until later tonight. How would I check to see if the motor is getting power?
@@markkoch3012 You'll need to use a voltmeter. The AC setting will let you verify that the control board power supply is actually getting 120VAC power. Then check that the motor is getting DC power from the control board. If the motor is getting DC power when it should be spinning, then the motor is defective.
Found PL-7 at garage sale for $5. I find this video after struggling getting the turntable seperated ugh..... 3 out of 4 buttons didn't work... the stop start spring piece was broke so bent some excess wire out from it and got it functioning.... speeds and repeat doesn't change hitting buttons - thats next project.... putting it back together to test is annoying though ...

Maybe. There should be an access hole on the bottom panel. The problem that many have is that the speed adjustment pot gets dirty/corroded and needs to be cleaned with something like DeOxit, and that would require removing the table from the bottom panel.
Last year I purchased a pioneer pl 7 turntable works really good except for one day the Quartz light went off and then it wouldn't play anymore it just went dead I need help!!

Awesome! Most likely the mechanism just needs some lube, or someone didn't reassemble it properly before.

I find this video after struggling getting the turntable seperated ugh..... 3 out of 4 buttons didn't work... the stop start spring piece was broke so bent some excess wire out from it and got it functioning.... speeds and repeat doesn't change hitting buttons - thats next project.... putting it back together to test is annoying though ...

@@litzdog911 Yeah I have stacks of turntables to fix - I need to learn how to restore these things. Unfortunatley they are rarely 'turn key' to flip. Using the money to get a Technics 1200 series. My old school personal table is a Bang & Olufsen

hey! is it possible to adjust the speed using a little screwdriver without remove everything?
Maybe. There should be an access hole on the bottom panel. The problem that many have is that the speed adjustment pot gets dirty/corroded and needs to be cleaned with something like DeOxit, and that would require removing the table from the bottom panel.

Last year I purchased a pioneer pl 7 turntable works really good except for one day the Quartz light went off and then it wouldn't play anymore it just went dead I need help!!
Sounds like a power supply issue. Do you have the schematic? Can you check the voltages?

My ones the PL 430 the motor twitches and if i spin it it’ll run at 100 RPM, odd problem

Turntables are not that complicated, but the tone arm and bearings are, this was never disassembled or serviced in this video.
True. The tonearm and bearings were fine, so no need to service them.
So you don't have to lubricate the spindle ?
It didn't need lubrication.

@@rosevillereaper9230 You would need to remove the platter and spindle to lubricate. Be sure to download the service manual to show how to access.
