Great reactions guys! Besides breaking the s3xual tension between them, the visit to the tea house was a test for John and Mariko to determine if there was truly anything going on between them. Toranaga knows that the ladies of the willow world were always privy to very intimate secrets and would eagerly spread gossip. What a fantastic scene, unsurprisingly.

I think Kiku was able to read both Mariko and Anjin very well. She purposely positioned herself where she did so it appeared that Mariko was the one explaining the Willow World, but incidentally expressing the feelings of both.
