I think it's important to note that a considerable amount of those 100,000 soldiers charged under the Ukrainian "desertion law". Didn't technically actually desert. If we apply the US military and other countries definitions of desertions, then the more accurate term would be AWOL (absence without leave). This is because what is happening is that UA soldiers are retreating from their positions, not because they are cowardly or have no intention to fight, not because they inexperienced but because they are simply avoiding a pointless death, and pointless in the tactical sense not in the philosophical one. This is even when they have been ordered not to retreat, and thus being charged with desertion, when actually they went AWOL, as they are still willing to fight, just not over the useless position they have been ordered to do so. A prime example is the AFU units defending Vuhledar being charged for desertion and one of its commander (72nd Brigade) being fired because they retreated to avoid encirclement in spite of being ordered not to. In that situation, not retreating made no tactical sense, but their incompetent commanders ordered them not to, probably for political reasons. IMO, this indicative of poor leadership in the AFU, giving their soldiers orders that are impossible to follow and then charging them with desertion when they don't follow said orders. The article about the French trained troops you talk about in the video, precisely describes this, 1700 going AWOL because of poor leadership and training unadapted to the current conflict.
Ironically, without the help of the French, the US would've probably been under British power for a lot longer. I can accept that the French of today are a different breed.
