Lost in Translation is the most beautiful movie I've ever come across. It's a quiet, mesmerizing film. Scarlett became my favorite actor instantly after watching it.
I think I agree.
@@bellazoe1 Me also, but then she became just regular Hollywood Scarlett and the illusion (if not delusion) was shattered. Now for me there's no link whatsoever between character and actor, but I still adore the character - and the film remains firmly on my top 5 list.
36 year age gap creeped me out when I saw it. Only two self absorbed Americans would be bored in Tokyo.
@@glindagoodwitchofnorthview8287It creeps you out until it happens to you. Imagine you're 25 years old. You watch this movie which seems a little under budget, boring & meaningless. 20 years pass & you've moved up the corporate ladder, had a few romantic interests and failed relationships. Now you're 45 and single. Then one day you meet someone who is 25 and she shows interest in you. She's the amazing person and you click instantly. You feel in your mind you're still that 25 year old but your body in the mirror reminds you of the harsh reality of the passage of time was not so kind. Still you're perfect for each other except prior to your meeting she's found a job overseas and she's moving to Sweden next week. The movie all of a sudden has profound meaning. It's my story. It's genious. I've watched it 10 times and I always cry. More so because I use to stay at the Park Hyatt Tokyo and had many dinners at the New York Grill on the 52nd floor during when I was in my early 30's

Hard to believe 20 years have gone by.
"You watch it and you don't judge it" is exactly how someone should digest the movie. It doesn't highlight the fact that there's an age gap. Coppola hever underlined that anywhere in the movie, its actually plain and simple - two people who are completely lost, find each other and connect. That's it.
and if anyone tries to cancel the movie now or in the future... I will be at your door.
scarlet's character brings age to the table and even mocks him by the end in what it looks to be stemming out of jealousy tho
I think the relationship gap is addressed and dealt with maturely, namely that a friendship +/- romance between these characters IS complicated and nuanced and hence worthy of exploration. The film isn't problematic because the relationship is taboo, it's good because of that taboo.
There's so much nuance to their relationship that it's difficult to even say it was more than a friendship.
I think the scene in question could be interpreted as Bob not wanting to be seen in a negative light by Charlotte because he was found to be unfaithful to his wife, not because she was jealous. Bob knows his lapse in judgement ruined his credibility with Charlotte.
If you haven't, go ahead and watch it. Make sure to open your heart beforehand
“Open your heart to two married people cheating on their spouses”.
now 21 years
@@BadMannerKorea When did they cheat?.
@@NGCS-ej4lz Go watch the movie. And I can't tell if you honestly don't know, or you watched it and you think kissing and developing an emotional connection isn't cheating...
@@BadMannerKorea sweety, you can build an emotional connection with anybody as long as you are on the same wavelenght. One has a stale marriage, the younger marriage looks plain wrong . Sure, there is attraction between the two, but few "friendly" of hugs, one hand-to-feet contact while sleeping, the final kiss that had nothing sexual at the end... do you call that cheating? Are you a priest?
Lost In Translation is my favourite movie ever. I was 20 when I first saw it and now I’m a month or so from 40, can’t quite get my head around that.
“You watch it and you don’t judge it”, perfectly put
It’s ludicrous the movie theaters never re-released it for the 20th anniversary.
I saw a 20th anniversary release at my local theatre last year loved it
Wow! Such a beautiful movie.... 🥰
I rewatched it twenty years later while in Tokyo. Reminded me how great it was...in fact, it it was even better than i remembered.
Makes me cry at the end, beautiful film
I just watched this movie recently with my partner because I remember my parents raving about it at the time. The first thing I said to her was that a movie like this can't be made today.
My favorite film ever.
This film, in fact, fills me with feelings, with moments, as if it had connected to my soul. Soundtrack, the actors, the plot...so beautiful
Such a perfect film - from the casting to the acting to the unspoken emotion to the cityscapes and locales to the music. The film still resonates as strong as it first did all those years ago.
That movie is 20 years old...
Dear lord
She looks beautiful.
he definitely doesnt
but thats another story
nope not anymore
She was so young then!
18, to be exact.

With a nud de scene and bro was 36 years older I bet all u weird old men got happy asf
If only she’d stayed that way.
What a weird take on the movie from the interviewer?! The whole point of the movie was the relationship between two strangers who are at completely different stages of their respective lives. The age difference was what made it interesting and relevant.
The way she said “Woah!” Then backtracked and said, “well, that sounds more profound than what was actually said makes me think it is what was said. I think the initial shock of “oh, they actually figured it out…” and then saying “no” was a way of trying to keep it a mystery.
it's not what he says
Yeah, so what does he say?@@paulgerhard5170
Just watch the movie and loved it. I only understand it because i am travelling now. The movie captures loneliness. Scarlet is so pretty and the movie us fun to watch when they got together
Favourite film
So happy to see Louis VXI is here. Really enjoyed his performance in Marie Antoinette!
She was 17, extremely young
one of the best movies ever. u have to watch it in the original language.
I think Murray's character could have whispered "Don''t worry, I'll be in Chicago [or wherever she was from] in October." That isn't profound, but it would account for the smiles.
what a brilliant film. and her performance was perfect. 17 at the time
Lost in Translation una de mis Favoritas 😊
When she explains it its exactly the way she played the part.
Just realised that Rushmore is there with her.
Could it be made today? They never had sex. It was about two lost people and a friendship. Geez!
People keep using the word “friendship” to sidestep the clear emotional relationship they have and the kiss at the end. Friends don’t kiss on the lips, sorry. They cheated on their spouses, both physically and emotionally.
When I first watched this film I thought it boring and quite meaningless and irrelevant. Several years later I feel my life has parallel to the characters, having taken a holiday to Tokyo and meeting a local girl there and experiencing the best bars and restaurants including several dinners at the Park Hyatt's New York Grill on the 52nd floor. I'd dated some amazing people during my twice yearly vacations to Tokyo. Unfortunately none of my relationships lasted and 20 years on I met someone half my age working selflessly at a local cafe where my work office is located. Unfortunately she's found work abroad ironically working at an international hotel as a bartender.
This movie has a lot of meaning and memories for me. Life imitates art they say.
Jason Schwartzman's face expression is so funny and also melancholic :) It's not easy to be a film star.
Love that movie.
I hate it when people take a beautifully made film that’s deep and starred excellent actors, and try draw negatives from it. Why can’t people just enjoy things without looking for issues.
There is NO way it's been twenty years since LIT.

scarlett looking good,a grown up woman mature and still beautiful.Lost in Translation is a film that has marked me and as Scarlet said" their relationship is timeless." such a masterpiece
One of my favourite films, incredible in every way.
Stop asking “could this be made today” - IT DOES NOT MATTER. IT EXISTS THEN, THIS IS NOW.
Im surprised they havent tried rebooting Lost in Translation with Chris Pratt and Margot Robbie
Meghan Markle and her dad would be a good casting
Amazing
Why do they always have to ruin the vibe with the "does it hold up today?" Type of question? 🤦♂️
It hold up today more than any other day.
Sofia's cousin is sat right there
I get the impressions that Johansson's character in Lost in Translation is much more charming than her in real life. She's a good actress, ill give her that. lol
In order for them to do any kind of remake to this today you'd either have to significantly close the age gap OR make the older character female and the younger one male. That seems like it would be easier for modern audiences to digest.
Jason looked so bored lol
LOL it's so obvious
Watching this interview, I see clearly the loss of innocence in Scarlet Johansonn. Her demeanor has become more “ LaLa Land” ish, if that makes sense. I can imagine how James Dean would be if he had made it to this point in his career. I keep imagining the hair glam band Poison’s song , “ Fallen Angel”. It’s a shame how people lose that freshness in life and become part of the machine.
I suspect the Time Dilation of Enoch and Elijah's return will seem like seconds to them.
Enoch was called Jupiter to Edgar Allan Poe
Enoch was called Nyarlathotep to H.P. Lovecraft
Enoch was called John Coffey to Stephen King
Enoch was called Enoch, the Seventh from Adam in Antediluvian Times...some things are Lost in Translation.
Always wanted a GF with the same energy and smarts as her LIT character.
wait, yahoo is still trying to be a thing?
They're big in Japan :-)
People have to STOP with the 2020s woke stuff criticising this movie because of the age difference. If they worry about that it just means they didn't get what this movie is about...

A women wrote the damn film😂 that should say enough
0:33 oh gawd stop with this WOKE CRAP bro your freakin second question you have to go there
It’s not “woke crap” at all. Relationships with huge age gaps, especially ones between younger women and men have become increasingly scrutinized as we progressed further into the 2000s and how the film industry has operated. It’s a perfectly valid question, especially considering what Scarlett Johansson has been put through and how she became a sex symbol at 17 years old.
@@KingofKnowhere you can clearly tell Scarlett had no issue with it, clearly wants to just tell off the interviewer, and somehow you feel you need to defend Scarlett. She said herself, "you watch it and you dont judge it". Thats politespeak for, gtfo interviewer.
Secondly, two months after Lost in Translation release, did Scarlett turn 19. So whatever impact of becoming a sex symbol that Lost in Translation had, occurred when she was 19. Dont twist historical facts for your own narrative.
@@KingofKnowhere And I do have news for you. Just because WOKE ppl like you try to ban relationships on screen like this, doesnt mean the REAL WORLD will stop having such relationships. It will continue happen long after you and your woke cause passes away.
More importantly, if they found an actor of the same age, the feeling would be completely off. It wouldn't be as ambiguous, and as delicate, and able introduce a nurturing/experienced side of Bill Murray able to guide the younger Scarlett thru her troubles.
But ok, lets just all follow WOKEness and have this movie banned. uh huh.

Ok, reading the comments here. I must be missing something. Just watched it and I thought it's one of the most rubbish movie I ever watched. So, shallow. There is nothing in it.
The film has no meaning unless you experience similar. I had the sentiment the film was under budget and arthouse. But that was until I experienced similar circumstances as the characters in the film. When the movie first came out I had nil interest. Then 2 years later I traveled to Japan on my own. Got lost. Loved the culture. Hated I couldn't communicate. Had mixed feelings about the people. But then met a Japanese girl in Tokyo who had 2 years previously studied abroad in my home city and she wanted to quit her job and go back. She hated Tokyo. Ironically I hated my home town and preferred to visit her in Tokyo. So we ended up having a long distance relationship. I'd make 2 trips each year to see her and she with not as many allocated holidays would visit me once a year. I remember I'd have dinner with her on the eve of my return flight home at the New York Grill at the Park Hyatt Tokyo, as featured in the film.
After a few years we went our separate ways. And 2 years ago I met someone almost half my age at a cafe bar. We got along well but for 2 things that kept us from having a relationship. The age difference and that prior to our meeting she'd applied for a job abroad at an international hotel and was successful in getting the job. Our stars were not aligned. I watch this bloody movie and it makes me cry😂
Also as a fun fact, the Suntory Hibiki whisky that Bill Murray endorses in the film use to be able to be purchased duty free for about $60. Only available in Japan for the domestic market back then. Since this film was made the popularity of Japanese whisky has ever increased with the explosion of whisky bars opening globally. That specific bottle of Suntory had been drunk to extinction due to connoisseurs recognizing Japanese make arguably better whiskey than Scotland. Today that bottle will set you back $2000 if you can find it.
Roger Ebert said it best: "I can't tell you how many people have told me that just don't get "Lost in Translation." They want to know what it's about. They complain "nothing happens." They've been trained by movies that tell them where to look and what to feel, in stories that have a beginning, a middle and an end. "Lost in Translation" offers an experience in the exercise of empathy."
@@danielthehuman107 If you have never travelled, found and lost love, lack emotion, deny fear, then the movie is not worth watching. Usually those people need to stick with action and horror films where the narrative is blatantly obvious.
Ооо!!! ДА!!!!@@danielthehuman107
The movie is for older people. One have to reach at least 35 to understand the movie. Also enormous screen is much needed (at least in my case).
I enjoyed the movie, but I'd have rather the characters not have committed adultery. For example, the woman could have been a widow in Japan visiting a busy photographer friend, while the man could have been working while seperated from a wife who committed adultery against him, who he wanted to forgive, and give another chance (though I'm not saying adultery is excusable, but that forgiveness is a fine theme in a film in my belief). The theme of acceptance and friendship between two individuals is wonderful. It's the unfaithfulness, and other sexual immorality- the prostitution, and stripping in strip bars, which objectify God's creations made in His divine 'image'- which upset me. Since I am a follower of Jesus those immoral themes stung spiritually.
The actions of characters in film do not have to be moral, it is not a film that is trying to tell you that adultery is ok, it is simply about two people's friendship.
Jesus didn't have a problem with "sexual immorality". Anyways, the two leads in the movie did not commit to adultery with each other. And that is crucial to one of the main themes of the movie - that their relationship is somewhere between friendship, lovers and strangers. Their relationship cannot be expressed with words, hence the title "lost in translation".
They didn’t commit adultery with each other. So many people think it’s a romantic relationship and it is not
That’s a rather narrow way of looking at it, I’m sure Jesus would not mind it
What a sad life to always bring your religion into everything. You are not morally superior to anyone else.
amazing scarlet still has the dry skin a little shine from make-up from smoking hairs pull back dry like wheat but still going bill well he finished. he just too weird no one wants to work with him any more.
He says: "Promise me the next thing you do is go up to that man and tell him the truth". There's a song about it,
