- Let's visit Göbeklitepe Şanlıurfa Archeology and Haleplibahçe Mosaic museum together on the Southeastern Anatolia Türkiye GAP tour.
Our first stop is the Şanlıurfa Archaeological Museum, where artifacts from excavations around Şanlıurfa such as Göbeklitepe and Karahantepe are exhibited. We travel here and discover mysteries and secrets at the zero point of history.
Göbeklitepe, known as the biggest historical discovery of recent years, dates back 12,000 years. Walking around this sacred area gives you an exciting feeling and a different energy. This is our second time coming here.
The artifacts and finds found in Göbeklitepe, recorded as the world's first temple, cause the past history to be rewritten. It forces us to reconsider everything we know about past history. The ruins here are older than the pyramids and Stone Age ruins, known as the oldest structures.
Göbeklitepe Archaeological excavation site is located 18 kilometers northeast of Şanlıurfa city center, near Örencik Village. We recommend that you go early. Otherwise, you may wait in a long queue.
When you reach the Göbelitepe excavation site, you should first visit the promotional area at the entrance and watch the videos before purchasing your ticket. Afterwards, you have to pass the ticket offices and wait for the free shuttle. The Göbeklitepe excavation site on the hill can be reached by shuttle minibuses. Entry is free for museum card holders.
When you go to the Göbeklitepe ruins and see only the stones, you may be disappointed like some people. Because the artifacts found during the excavations in Göbeklitepe are exhibited in the Şanlıurfa archaeological museum. For this reason, you should also visit the archaeological museum in Şanlıurfa city center before or after visiting the Göbekli Tepe excavation site.
Let us also give brief information about Göbeklitepe and its history. You can refer to the internet for more.
The area was discovered in 1963 during a survey conducted in partnership with Istanbul and Chicago Universities and was defined as a "Neolithic Settlement". Many years were spent just like that.
The real situation of the area began to emerge with the excavations started after 1994. After these studies, it was understood that Göbeklitepe was a cult center dating back 12000 years.
In the middle of approximately 20 round and oval structures with diameters of up to 30 meters, there are two "T" shaped, 5 meters high, independent limestone columns.
There are also smaller columns on the inner walls of the buildings. The scientific data mentioned about Göbekli Tepe provide important information that requires re-evaluation of the theoretical framework and dating of the neolithic period in archaeological studies.
It has been understood that Göbeklitepe was a unique sacred area for the Neolithic period with its location, dimensions, dating and monumentality of its structures. The area yields important archaeological findings as it remained untouched in its natural environment for 12000 years.
In a period when man lived as a hunter-gatherer, his construction of temples that required advanced architecture caused astonishment all over the world. The temples, which reflect the belief world of prehistoric people and are enriched with animist figures, have made Göbekli Tepe one of the most important discoveries in the history of archaeology.
