According to claims of Puri temple tradition and historians of Odisha, Rasagola originated in Puri as KHIRA MOHANA. Rasagola has been traditionally offered as Bhog to goddess Mahalaxmi at Shree Jagannath Temple, Puri.
Odisha people observes "Rasagola Divas" on Niladri Bije because according to tradition, Lord Jagannath offers Rasagola to is consort Maa Mahalaxmi on this day to a appease her anger. According to mythology goddess Laxmi was angry with Lord Jagannath for not taking her in the Rathyatra.
Since July 30, 2015, people of Odisha have started celebrating "Niladri Bije" ritual as Rasagola Divas.
