Yeah, the citrus tea ball experience is a coin toss.
In my experience,it is a way for vendors to add a bit of excitement to an otherwise unremarkable tea.
    Not a bad tea,just a…forgettable one.
I think it would be interesting if you did indeed just take out the leaves, and steep without the peel,I think you will find the tea leaves to be just mediocre.
I have had very nice ones, but they seem rare, more of showpiece tea,for guests,or gifts.
I would just as soon introduce fresh citrus peel, and get a more satisfying result, which I have done, with lime peel!
Save your money, take a raw or ripe that you know you already love, and use fresh peel.
Thanks for sharing over there in Pittsburgh!

I would say Jesse's tea orange is a cut above the others. I can get almost double the number of good steeps out of it in addition to cold brewing the leftover.
Another thing with some Chinese teas is they're not super tasty on the forefront but the way all aging compounds in them interact with the metabolism is also taken into consideration. There are some teas I've had that remind me more of mulch than tea on the initial taste but 6 or 7 minutes into the tea session, I can physically feel the tension in my trapezius muscles actually lift and my ears will change position (and I'm not even one of those people who can move their ears), or sometimes a tea will make me hyperaware of the papercuts i got from work because the stinging fingertips got amplified. It's all things to consider with tea, taste is just the cover of the book.
