Nah it's probably more like "Accountability in Financial inactivity"
It's amazing what just creative reframing can accomplish. If you have that level of control and understanding of your mind, you could turn a lot of initially dry, boring tasks into activities that feel just like your hobbies.
If you didn't expect a skillshare promo in this video then you don't use RUclips enough
Ive never used Skillshare before, I only know it as the annoying company that advertises everywhere on RUclips. When he mentioned them I was like fuck sake this is an ad

The brain is amazing at learning, it just has to have a personal reason to do so, it's part of why the school system is so ineffective in most places.
@Nick Knight Beats Of course, I wasn't trying to say personal gain is all that matters, I just didn't wanna write a thesis.
On a side note: being an idiot and being uninformed or misinformed are not the same thing.

How you got this superpower
1.6 kilometres away actually
I saw it coming right from the thumbnail.
I saw it from the title!
LoL
"Skillshared" will soon be a thing. Just like being "Rickrolled". Swear I didn't see it coming.
Bahahahaha. I am actually laughing out loud at this.
To be fair, Skillshare do sponsor a lot of good RUclipsrs and make their videos possible, Jarvis Johnson being my favourite.
And if Busuu or iTalki reached out to me to do a sponsored language learning video on my channel for them I'd be like "Um... yes."
NEVER GONNA SKILLSHARE YOU
You made the face in your avatar when the ad started? 😂
Ha, Squarespaced is kinda dead now I guess.
I never know that skillshare already like this. And I never know that Rickroll meme exits before
TL;DR: Promise you'll do something for someone for FREE that you suck at. Results: Speed boost your learning.
Why? Because it's exciting accountability.
it should be TL;DW (too long; didn't watch) 😂
Still, watch the video, this summary is great and all, but the video is written and edited so well, that the lessons you learn will stick much more.
LeoDahVee yeah and the skillshare part too oh man
But it can't be anything. It has to be something such that you know you'd have that positive response. That means you need to truly know yourself first.
Tl:DR use skillshare
So basically: Have a specific, personally meaningful (to you) reason to learn, rather than just doing it for learning's sake. Such as an external commitment. Makes a lot of sense and I wholeheartedly agree.

I'm getting over depression watching your videos, I have this project that I woke up deciding that I'm gonna call it quit, but I guess I found a source of inspiration.
Thank you Johnny!
This resonates with me. I was in a similar situation last year, but then my life changed in ways I could not have imagined.
Always remember that things never go as planned, but every hardship that you encounter helps build your character and gives you experiences that you can learn from. I believe in you.

Fantastic video! I've felt the same way and forced myself to learn many new skills, though one thing about it is that when you have that excitement learning almost doesn't feel like work anymore. It's a great feeling.
For this very concept I love my programming teacher.
Basically he assigned a freeform project to groups and gave us a hefty time-frame (5 months minus 1 month of fake pressure).
So I both wanted to deliver to that teacher and to my group members and immediately got invested in the project.
I created my first 3d fps game, my programming skills and understanding skyrocketed and I spent hundreds of hours in blender resulting in a basic understanding of modelling and reinforcing my knowledge for aesthetics, learned animation, graphics- and sound-effects on the fly, because I set that goal for myself, I wanted a finished product.
By now that was 1.5 years ago and I never have been that productive since... hell... arguably I haven't been productive at all since.
same for me with application development.
Same with me for application and web development, did unity for some time too
Do you get a job as software engineer?
What school did you go to for that class?
Did it actually take you hundreds of hours to learn blender?

Yeah, I too like being deceived /s. Seriously, people need to make clear what is editorial content and what is advertisement. And this whole video is a mess in that regard. i know that feeling, something similar happend to me in the college, I was nominated to be College magazine's designer by my teacher because i was "good with computer and stuff" and we didn't have enough fund to get external designer.😂 whilei had literally no idea of graphic designing, illustrating or even collating anything.
But for the next 1 month i consumed so much tutorials that i was able incorporate Photoshop, adobe illustrator, InDesign and Corel draw work to complete the magazine from scratch.
and that's why I'm a big supporter for these online tutorials and courses!

I'm glad you coined a name for this, I used to love getting that rush of absorbing knowledge and learning especially when I was in high school. I used to wait till a day or two before projects and works were due in order to get that rush and I tended to do much better under that pressure of there being a lack of time. It really helped me with my learning!
You are so right about the whole motivation part, if we are scared and unsure about our skills we end up freaking out and not doing them or just get completely demotivated. But going out there and doing something with excitement actually changes the whole part of getting de motivated and pushes us do stuff .
Great video!!
really needed to watch something like this, thanks! and it was a great tip to download favourite videos and to watch them second by second. it's kind of obvious, yet I've never thought of doing it.
keep up the great work, love watching your and Iz's videos!
I had a similar experience when I signed up for a summer math program for my university before my first year. I had done poorly in math in high school and knew none of the math that was required for the program, but I was excited to go to my uni the summer before my freshman year (I would be given free room and board too). When I was accepted I suddenly had a surge of excited accountability, and in the month and a half before the program I laser focused on math and learned faster than I had ever before. The program went great, and I was rated third highest despite having the least formal experience in math.
Thank you for sharing your story, I never knew how to digest what I had gone through that summer but your video explains it well with an amazing story behind it.
I definitely can relate with this! But it's amazing how simply you've put it across to the followers! This is it people. The most simple but genuine advice by Johnny!
Dude this was incredible. Never heard of you before and you just cut straight thru me and inspired tf out of me. Thank you dude seriously
That frame-by-frame tip is so so true. I remember going through frame-by-frame with the Watchtower of Turkey and my editing skills increased by at least three-fold.
I just wanted to say, your animation on Vox is amazing, I love watching them! I totally get your point, it's honestly the first time someone articulated this experience/emotion accurately. Good job and keep it up!
I repeatedly put myself in such a situation for the exact outcomes he described here, the only difference being I experienced that nasty feeling of failure a lot more than he expressed here. Although, I also saw how satisfying it is when it comes together. This just motivates me to keep doing it and better.
I'll do it dude. I'll quit my bad habits, have a healthy and disciplined lifestyle, which is my goal right now. I'll come back here in 2 months to update how did it go, and I promise I will reach my goal. This comment will be my "accountability." Couldn't agree more! When I wanted to learn motion graphics I downloaded a Vox video I admired ("2015 in 4 minutes") and watched it back frame by frame. I then scoured the internet and RUclips for tutorials on how to make these animations. And as I learned I applied these animations to my videos. There's something incredible about "learning by doing." I still find inspiration and lessons from videos like Vox -- tech companies like Google or Facebook often have great animations to learn from. Thanks Johnny, another great video! I hope you see this :)
This "boost of knowledge" came to me 4 the first time when i was in the highschool, and my biology teacher tell us about the types of cells, DNA, mitochondria, and since that moment, i needed to know about it, i spent all my free time learning about human body, the limits, the weakness, how our natural "weakness" made us this strong, just because I WAS EXCITED. Then one day, i did some portfolios about lungs, diabetes and muscle memory and put it on my teacher's table, and left, now, in college, more than 1 year later, this homework, that she ask 1 portfolio and I've made 3, all of them are in a display panel, to call students for scientific initiation more than a year ago.
I hope my english still Understandable. Your videos are awesome.
I really appreciate your honesty in this video.
I know this is an old video at this point, but I want to say that I connect with this a lot. I have a similar story I'd like to share about an inflection point that occurred when I graduated college. I studied filmmaking and was unsure what path I wanted to take so I applied to a bunch of jobs in every part of film production. It was very difficult for me to break in anywhere even though I felt like I had a lot to offer a film company. I had VFX skills, editing skills, and some experience with cinematography.
Then I came across an alumni of my college who worked in music videos and needed some help with VFX. It was a simple motion tracking job that was done after a week of work, but what happened next changed my trajectory entirely. The guy who hired me was taking a break from VFX and the director he worked with needed a VFX Supervisor for a music video that was shooting in two weeks. I hopped on board and built a small VFX team of friends from college. I went from a single freelance gig doing basic stuff, to the leader of a department on a professional music video shot entirely on green screen. In the end I finished it on time and satisfied the client and this lead to three more projects with me as a lead artist.
I now work full time at a VFX studio on TV and films. It just goes to show that life can sometimes have these crazy moments of opportunity that force you to innovate and reform yourself. Anyways just thought I would share this. Hope you got something out of my little story.
Johnny low key out here making the best stuff on the tubes
the skillshare promo wasnt just smooth, it was perfectly integrated into the core concept and "hurdle" the video is attempting to help the viewers get over.

I'm impressed with Johnny's first animation - that owl was cute! 🦉
i had an experience like this too! i had wanted to build up some skills in animation but i didn't do it until i told myself that i'd take part in a competition for young people that love art. looking back i think i could have done a better job but it was great to see how much you're willing to work towards something when you have that sort of pressure!
Vox’s videos are amazing for so many reasons, typically the research and concise information is the backbone, but the animation and graphic style is top notch too
I grabbed the offer and they thank you so much for making this video. I want to start to blog and vlog again and now I feel really inspired and I know that I will start the learning curve with skillshare. Woohoo!

Yep, I think other might refer to the same thing as "setting yourself up to fail" and/or "learning on the job".
The phenomenon that you are talking about has also happened to me. Back when I was 14 we had to make a poster about a disease and no one knew how to make one so I stood up and said that I new how to use photoshop and illustrator and I could make the poster. Little did they know that I had downloaded those programs a few days ago... Anyways I had spend a whole week continuously working on a poster and watching endless tutorials and the end result was praised by everyone in my class. It looked as if it was made by a graphic designer.

Dude, we are kindred spirits and I'm SO thankful for the content you put out.
I have to say, this video has inspired me to push myself! I had also been wanting to learn motion graphics and create videos well beyond what I could currently do, but about four months ago I watched this video and got really inspired! I reached out to a company and told them I wanted to make a directional video for them, so I studied their company and then took a ton of courses on After Effects and created a video I am truly proud of. Now out of that I have been able to start my own business! Thanks for the making this video, it gave me the push I needed to change the course of my career.
This is literally how I got into video editing. I took up a project I was definitely not capable of delivering at the time. But the excitement of shooting and editing a documentary trumped everything. The moment you decide that you can learn/do anything, you legit become invincible.
Skillshare plug aside, I do understand and relate to the 'message' of this video
That was me. I chose to make a commentary video as a college project then realized I knew nothing about filming, editing, I didn't even own a camera. I literally sat down and watched about 80 straight videos about DaVinci Resolve.
Started video content like two years ago midway through college. Never could put into words what the rush I felt was when I was staying up till 3 am watching after effect tutorials. Been a tough market for creatives right now and this video helped me mentally a ton! Thank you!
I love the pace of your videos ... they are engaging and not have some extra burden with them
As someone who's experienced this excited accountability firsthand, and as a teacher, I just wanted to say I think you've described this in a way I never could. Thanks for this and I'll be sharing it with my students
I did this a week ago! For a project I did for school, I promised literally everyone that I knew that I was going to make a game that they could play. I was super excited and wanted to start playing a game but never had the time and resources. Me telling literally everyone that I was going to make a game put pressure on me and I was so excited so this boosted me to make my game!
Thank you so much for making this!

I want to do both after watching Google Io 2019 I'm really into machine learning and neural networks. But I also want to learn how to get good and creating film like these videos. While working seems impossible to manage it all. But I guess it just requires sacrifice discipline and time management. It just sucks I think I'm at the point where im realizing where you can only satisfy your self actualization or your monkey instant gratifying consumption self. I want to do more but it won't happen if I don't make it happen. Time will go on little excited accountability I like this method. I did this a few times by accident in my life and always was happy with the result. From video projects, to first website for uncle. I think this is a great strategy. I just wish there was a way to do it all. There is but then you don't sleep and I've always undergone those side effects and health issues for too long.
I love this video and you've done a great job of putting into words what I've been feeling for months.
I'm a freelance software developer, and I'll often take on projects in things I really don't have any experience in, and have myself hungrily devouring tutorials and articles about the types of technology I need to use.
I remember when I first learned HTML (code that makes up websites) I watched 40 tutorials in a weekend at 2x speed and absorbed it all.

Thank so much for this video! I was in a slumped phase but going to use this approach. I noticed in the past this is how I learned things!
Thank you for sharing this.
Had an extremely similar experience. I was lucky to start an internship on my first year of college, to do graphic design. Someone asked me to create a website, I said yes, thinking it was a similar thing to designing brochures. It wasn't. I had some coding experience from 2 years of a previous unfinished engineering program, and when I discovered how websites were built, I simply couldn't get enough. After launching that website my obsession with it was fading but a bunch of organizations had seen and liked the work I had done, and then the small single-organization website became a state-wide project with lots of organizations involved, and that kept me in a cycle of forced learning, with constant incentives/rewards/penalties to keep it going. I have diplomas for Visual Communications and for Fine Arts, but have been mainly making a living off of web (and now app) development for over 11 years now. I value that learning more than anything I ever got from being in school, to be honest. I love this video, because there is incredible power in taking on commitments where you don't really have the necessary skills to deliver, but you know what it takes to deliver - and so you have no other option but to commit fully.
What a video, amazing, you made me continue my unity game thank you!
keep it up :)

I did something similar for Berlins Transport map, but in a much smaller scale: I noticed several mistakes in the map, like some lines being in the wrong position. So I posted pictures on twitter comparing the original map with my corrected version. And the transport company BVG actually followed like 90% of my suggestions! :D
Edit: Oh and then the next year with a new line added they made a similar mistake again...
