  • ELS 502 switched Alter Metal before passing by and it was a LONG train too! It had to be nearly a mile long, I've never seen ELS 502 pulling so many cars at once!

Back in the late 1990's and 2000's, the museum for which I volunteered ran a commuter operation to the Indiana State Fair. Engines were F/FP-7, then GP-7/9. Cab temps in the F units reached 110, but were slightly cooler in the Geeps. We didn't care--we were volunteers who qualifed as crew to run trains over a line connected to the general rail system. At least 15 road crossings within the cities of Indianapolis and Fishers.

Hi, Jason! I enjoyed this video!
I came up with 67 cars and 1 engine. This was an easy train to guess the length and I’m probably pretty close. Just as a
rule of thumb, I take the total cars times 60 feet for each car.
    That’s 4,020 feet. I also figured
each car, individually, and came up with 4,166 feet. I gave them the following denominators:
    23 2 bay CH’s 42’ each
    30 center beams 80’ each
    10 52’ gons 58’ each
    1 66’ gon 70’
    3 20,000 gal T’s 50’ each
Totals out 4,166’. Footage for the gons is inside and outside
lengths over coupler pulling faces. I’m guessing the middle
group of gons is from Alter, since DJNX is the reporting mark for Nucor Steel cars.
Actually, the marks are assigned to David J. Joseph Co.
and cars assigned to Nucor. We
have a Nucor Steel mill not too far from us. Thanks, again, for the video!

Stockpiling cars for LP and that's a new high of 30 Center beams. Also about a dozen gondolas of various Heights and lengths. The way those cars are scrambled that is the way they came out of Green Bay and apparently he did not have adequate room to sort them out in Crivitz. There should be a batch of DJJX gons up in Channing so some should be coming south. Try to stay cool and hydrated. If nothing else watch the KillerBee movie on the E&LS snowplow

Of the 67 cars, I believe no more than about a dozen or so were loads ( the first cut of hoppers, the 3 glue tanks and about 6 hoppers towards the rear). 502 would be close to its limit, especially on a 90+ day! Talking of which, ELS might be getting close to stopping operations if that heat continues - buckled rail, eh?

I counted 67 cars. Can anyone confirm? I wonder what the overall length of today's train was? I can't believe you took the time to film with the temps so high, thank you! Wea have baking here in SE Michigan for the past couple of days with dew point temps in the 70-degree range! Sticky for sure. Time to go cool off. I wonder why they don't have AC in the cab? And running the train with the cab in the rear getting hit with all that engine and generator heat, I'd have to say those guys were cooking as well. I hope they brought a cooler full of ice and water.

@MrEferrell the former Milwaukee Road went to Republic. C&NW & LS&I also did to service mines & timber & o the industries. The track work was complex, so it's not easy to know which rail line is which from present day maps & aerial/satellite photos. LS&I and CN service the present active Cleveland Cliffs mine south of Marquette.

Question: can you get close enough to film the switching at the mill or is that strictly off limits? We don't need any more trouble, but it would be interesting to see if they have their own power up there. They did have 401 or 402 at one time, but one of those has been parted out in the yard. Idk, it's bee some time.
