Ondra Poygah is an initiative of the Gulmit community built in a record in 60 days period in winter of 2020/2021. With a length of around four km and rising to an elevation of 1560m. Ondra Poygah is considered to be Pakistan’s longest and highest stair.
Ondra is the name of an ancient fort while Poygah in the local Wakhi languages means stair. Ondra Poygah comprises of 1655 stairs built by the locals on self-basis with mud and stones. The Ondra Poygah trail starts at the historical Gulmit Polo ground and ends at the site of an ancient Ondra fort. An easy and short hike offering amazing 369 degree views of Gulmit village. From the Ondra fort you can spot Attabad Lake, Passu Cones, Shisper Peak and Gulmit Tower. During Spring you can see the pop of pink and white colors as the cherry blossoms are blooming along the trail and in autumn is more colorful with red, orange, yellow and browns colors while the tree leaves changes colours.The Ondra Poygah is a unique project and pioneering eco and adventure tourism while also highlighting the history and archeological heritage of the Upper Hunza region.
The Ondra Poygah name is given to the steps built by the local community to connect Gulmit village to the Ondra Fort.Ondra Poygah is believed to be the longest and highest stairs in Pakistan. Hunza is one of the most attractive tourist destinations in the country across all seasons due to its breathtaking views and mesmerizing beauty.
The local community in Hunza valley is actively playing its role. Recently the community of Gulmit in Upper Hunza valley started a project ‘Ondra Poygah which in the local language means ‘steps towards Ondra fort. The track to the Ondra fort will be unique in the sense that it will be the longest track in Pakistan with more than 1600 steps/stairs. It will be more than four kilometer in length and will take at least one hour hike to reach the top.
From the top of the track one can witness the mesmerizing views of Attabad Lake and surrounding areas. The community volunteers work on their own and more than 1600 steps have been built so far.
The track will help boost tourism in the area and preserve the historical ondra fort on the hilltop. The local community members of Gulmit village in the Upper Hunza valley are participating in the construction work with great zeal.
