This little device makes the FT817ND perform like a full sized Yaesu radio. Without it, even with mechanical filters, the 817ND start to hurt the ears after sometime listening and scanning the frequencies. But with this DSP, the voices comes up to front of the stage and it expands the sound stage like it was broadcast quality. Pretty unbelievable. Luckily, I did not do this mod as the parts are really tiny and you need a real steady hands and good soldering skills.
As always Peter, your work is so professional a pleasure to watch, it also has a side effect,I personally take more time with my own projects with minimal failures these day's I'd call that a win win situation. Thank You
Nice little module but really, they ground the part number off the QFP IC. That's enough to make me not buy one. I refuse to buy products that are intentionally made unserviceable because the manufacturer grinds off part numbers. Same reason I refuse to buy a radio the manufacturer won't release a service manual for.
I think it's to make it more difficult to copy rather than to make it unservicable. There are ways to disable the copy protection for some FPGAs or DSP processors but that tends to be proprietary information unless leaked.
@@NoName-mr1lh If another company wanted to copy the product it's not hard. Send the chip to Russia and pay to have it decapped and the die scanned with a electron microscope.
Good modification you can hear reduced noise level but a lot will depend on the radio you will not be able to eliminate all the noise very neat small PCB.
Thanks Buddy. Well it works pretty well but some ham don't like it because they have the feeling it cuts highs. well I don't think so. For me it is an improvement but I don't like to recommend as the tastes are to different .. You are right the wire is much to stiff. Have a nice day 73
That is what I was thinking - wires are too heavy for the pcb in the space available not sure if will fit into my FT817 as I have extra mechanical filter installed
To be honest I wonder if it really is worth the effort? Yes you could hear the increase in signal to noise ratio (not dramatic though), but that is a low power Tx - so yes, you will be hearing a few more signals but would still not be able to work them well. Apologies if that is not technically correct!
hi, this is an interesting item, have you also seen the nedsp1901-kbd that they have out now, and fitting it to an 818 would also be interesting.. i currently have the aftermarket yaesu ssb filter fitted and it does work, altho not so well at times.. i presume this filter / dps would be better.. also sota beams has one out to.. the laserbeam-817, they seem to fit in the same way but there is no adjustment its automatic and also works with optional filter fitted also.. seems to be a mine field and to know what to go for.. thanx for the videos.. de m0yyo
Thank you for the video. Other attempts at audio over camera demos are available with positive results as well. However, this is a super helpful video of how to install. Nice work. I know it is not the scope of this video, but I would love to see how to remove the Main PCB with advice on ribbon cables and the power (?) cables. I hope to find that somewhere. Very helpful. Thank you for your detailed efforts.
Thanks for your feed-back Adam!. May be this video will help to get some additional insight views..around 34:00 it starts ruclips.net/video/3izDNNNLp2c/видео.html
TRX Bench Ironically, I found that video previously and was slightly entertained that removal process of the main PCB was a hard cut to the removed board. Thanks for digging it up regardless. Overall after figuring out the ribbon cable, I felt a lot more confident tackling this somewhat complex mod seeing your very helpful video. It all went well and I love the new bhi DSP filter personally. Thank you again. One more question, I have spent some serious search time and cannot believe I cannot find that front BNC 50 ohm dummy load resistor you have. I have a simple silver one that looks like a modified BNC connector. Just for the pride of aesthetics and slightly more rugged benefits on the radio, can you share where you found that all black rugged looking dummy load? Thank you again.
You cannot get these anymore I would have upgraded my radio but it seems that the FT817 is now passe but I find that it is a convenient size for SOTA, even if some claim it is not sensitive enough. I have one amateur in Canberra who has done 5000 SOTA contacts with his radio and VK3EYE should have totally demolished his years ago and yet he still makes contacts into the US and Europe. A DSP would be a worthwhile addition to this radio.
Good video Peter! Those wires for the button/LED PCB look like they could have been made a whole lot thinner, or even not using a sheathed cable. Might make mounting the PCB a bit easier.
It would be nice to see this DSP swept with a frequency generator (like from 100Hz to 5kHz) and see how the filter attenuates and discriminates on an oscilloscope. Or even better, put one scope probe on the unfiltered input signal and another on the filtered output signal, and then put voice through it (like those images in the manual) to see the difference in signal to noise.
in my opinion it is not advisable to install the module because the weak signals are lost, moreover it becomes difficult to decipher the correspondent .... practically it is worse than the FT-991 DSP where the audio seems to come from the planet Mars.
China. The adjustment is on the underside of the chinese units. Yaesu made theirs the right way so that it can be adjusted with it installed, unlike the chinese which have to be removed.
Dear sir please give me some idea all the chhannel stays busy i am not being able to solve this even after removing components or breaking the receiver path channel stays busy even after removing if amp all chhannel stays busy please help me solve this problem
I've been thinking about doing this mod to my FT817nd but wonder where I'd mount the board since I have a filter in that slot. Nice work by the way. Well done. KC3BLI
Peter - a great video, but; I don't know whether you set this up or just RUclips - I had to watch over 20 ads to see your video - this is really too much. If you can change that it would be great.
Hi I'm sorry, RUclips is arranging the ads. We can only turn them on or off but no detailed setting possible. Thanks for your feedback, we take it very serious.
To be honest I cant tell the difference, I have fitted a number of these PCB's for clients and they seem happy enough with them but to me they seem to have little benefit.
Makes Zero sense to buy the unit that only works with one radio when you can buy one that you may use with many radios that you currently own and cuter radios that you will own in the future.😱😳
Good product but overpriced - I have had similar results with analog IC - LM1894 noise reduction at a fraction of the price - also takes up less space in the enclosure !!

Hi Mike,
You hit the nail on the head. :-) 73 WB3BJU
That part probably is a programmable device like a CPLD or FPGA, so not really serviceable anyway. (with protected flash memory, if it has one)
This is probably correct...

I decided to use BHI's external mini-speaker instead of modifying my radio. Same results. It works pretty well.
good idea so you can use it on any radio..
What model ?
Very precise Workmanship
Not the skills everyone may have
Nice work Peter. Just perfect.
Really enjoy following your work

You have done a great job on the installation and demonstration of the bpi noise reduction unit best of 73's to you and have a nice day!
Just FYI, it’s a BHI not a BPI.😳😱
Great video but what happens when you mess up the pad for the blue wire (oops) where else can you connect to. cheers.

Yeah you never will eliminate all the noise but it is working pretty well. Thanks for watching John 73
Very nicely engineered product!
Ahh this is some i want to try, this was very interesting video, thanks!!
good luck with the project
Good installation Peter. I hope it works as intended. They sure used some big wires on that unit. Thanks for sharing my friend 73.

I just bought the BHI DSP speaker instead, can use it on my ft817-857 & 897

Do you think the DSP is better than the Yaesu Y122 SSB ?
Interesting module Peter, thanks for sharing 73
Thanks for watching 73

Is the TCXO module in the background from China, or the original from Yaesu?
Thank you for the video!

China. The adjustment is on the underside of the chinese units. Yaesu made theirs the right way so that it can be adjusted with it installed, unlike the chinese which have to be removed.

Thanks Bernd! Yes china for little money 73
Seems simple enough to use on any transceiver.
sure no problem at all..Thanks for comment 73

@@TRXLab yes there is
Buy the speaker and use it with several radios which makes far more sense and saves you money overall.😳
Did you install the DSP over the filter ?
@@TRXLab So I can install the DSP with a filter in the slot ?
Get the mini spkr it can be used on other rigs not tobe used on cw
Good job, but think need wires cut shorter?
Made huge diffrence on ze radio :)
of course it makes a difference on ze radio

great mod
Thanks Dennis! 73
Do not mess the flat ribbon cable up some issues with the adj on the pcb kg6mn
all easy no problem :^)
I hoped you will use your communications tester to see the result.
well yes on the com tester it is easy to see thought it is more interesting to see it under real conditions...

No big difference in my eyes and top cover drilled …so bd for me. I like narrow filters much more.
Wish I knew where to connect this inside a ft-450d lol
I am looking for about your product place lace me a messages. When I post this , I am looking for more information no this .
