@@ralphmowery2898 ALL the printer companies are the same. I bought a Canon printer (with starter ink) for $19.95 at Walmart about 3yrs ago. When I needed ink, found Canon ink for $40! Printer ink is the MOST expensive item on Earth. The cost of ink = $4000 per gallon!! FACTS! This is why "Laser" printers are becoming so popular.
John Deere's biggest mistake was selling products in the big box stores in the first place.
Actually it was brilliant move, come out with a budget tractor to go against and trounce the other budget tractors….i used to go and PDI them at Lowe’s and HD stores before they could sell them, usually worked out to about 700 mowers a year at 6 stores, they sold a ton of them
@@Tech-tipsntricks not if destroys a brand's image and reputation. It's a mistake because you buy from a place like that and when you need warranty service the big box stores cannot provide warranty service, they give you the runaround, you go to a John Deere dealer for warranty service and they put you on the bottom of the list because you didn't buy from them. Because of that you'll wish you bought from a dealer because you were given the runaround. John Deere was always known as being one of the best names in turf equipment.
They sold millions of them as a better cheap mower than the cheap ones out there. Have seen new young landscapers buy one and a trailer from Lowes and hd to get started out in business…then up grade….peope know they are buying cheap, that’s why they are there…but have to go to dealer to get warranty registered and warranty done, then they are comfortable and know dealer…brilliant
@@Tech-tipsntricks it makes more sense to buy from a dealer in the first place. They cost more money upfront but since you're getting a better made product that'll last longer you'll save money in the long run. Not to mention you won't be put on the bottom of the list when it comes to warranty service. John Deere should have never got involved in the cheap mower market. They were always associated with being the best on the market. Selling in the big box stores ruins a brand's reputation in most situations.
I’ve worked at a Deere dealer on mowers for 24 years now, at our store everyone is in same que, if issues come up we fight with Deere, if legit for everyone, even if unit is out of warranty, proud of it too, doesn’t matter if green, orange, yellow or red

Absolutely Buyer Beware!! Buyers need to inform themselves about what they're buying. There's nothing magical about the John Deere brand name. They've been rebranding many different machines for decades. This is not necessarily a bad thing, as some of these products were really good. I remember JD had their compact utility tractors built by Yanmar, a Japanese tractor manufacturer. Most buyers probably had no idea. These Yanmars were really great little tractors and a credit to any brand, so they were up to the "John Deere Standard". The problem comes when you have to overpay a premium for the JD name and the green paint, when you could buy essentially the same equipment cheaper directly from the real manufacturer. Just the 1000 series compacts were built by yammer.
No 1000 series are Deere, just yanmar engine…older ones before 1000 series were yanmar tractors, but Deere partially owns yanmar and use there engines in all smaller diesel machines, gators, z track diesels and even the smaller wheel loaders which are Liebehr loaders
My Dad bought a John Deere 650 in 1981, one of the tractors built by Yanmar to JD specs. However, if you looked, it said Yanmar on it all over the place, even on the serial number tag. JD never tried to keep it a secret, as Tarryl alludes to in the video... you clearly knew it was a Yanmar tractor if you just opened your eyes. It still is a great tractor, he still has it, but is showing its age a bit, being 43 years old now.
When you buy a tractor like a John Deere, or CaseIH, you're also buying into the dealer support network, which should be a major consideration when buying equipment. If you get a tractor like a TYM or Mahindra or any of these lower tier companies, sure you get a tractor at a much lower price, but then unfortunately you really realize the cost when you need dealer/parts support. Ask me how I know. I bought a Mahindra... great tractor... but the dealer and Parts support on it is now zero... my closest mahindra dealer is 2 hours away. If I would have spent a little more money on the green paint, I would have had a modern up to date dealer about 15 minutes away and great parts support. Right now I am my parts support.... If I can't find it myself, I can't get it fixed.
There used to be a animal feed company whose slogan was "Only the rich can afford cheap feed..." Well, the same holds true on tractors.

I worked for a company that makes spark plugs and we made 6 million Autolite plugs one summer, but we made Atlas, JC Penny, Clark Equipment and many other brands. Spark plug's are all the same, few brands of any product are actually made by the brand.
I stacked boxes of soy milk on pallets for a summer after high school. All the soy milk, almond milk and basically anything that comes in a tetrapak container of all brands is made in that facility. It makes sense because it takes giant machines to turn a big wheel of container material into a folded container filled with a liquid and sanitized and packaged up.

Even more so applies to lead acid (car) batteries. Remember reading label of Interstate Battery and it said basically “We market batteries”. Lots of money from marketing and not producing cuz they pay for a NASCAR team for marketing and that ain’t cheap
Same for automotive type batteries. Only a few companies actually make them but many other companies put their name on it.
My biggest issue with cheap stuff so far is stripped self tapping bolts and flimsy plastics. Keep the engines well maintained and don't kill the machine with over use you will get far. A tap and die set and tiny welder will do a lot if you are handy.
These machines are made to be disposable, not fixable.
John deer is no longer a reputable manufacturer, my mother bought a brand new john deer and because of a manufacturers defect it burnt to the ground with less then 10 hours of use. Neither John deer nor the dealership selling the mower would warranty the unit. In our town alone 3 of the same John deer burnt up. They claimed we did something wrong when using the unit so she had to go through home insurance to pay off the mower she never got to use.

Interesting. Do you know what engine it had? I know kawasaki engines have been recalled recently.
I've never even considered anything JD since the right to repair stuff came out. I'm a huge believer in right to repair and will not touch their brand.
I was helping my neighbor tune up his lawn tractor and told him not to pay double for a JD air filter. I said look here, here's the Breaks & Scrapem logo and model number on yer engine so just look up the air filter that way. He was surprised and then he asked "so BS makes these engines for Deere but nobody else gets this one right?"
I told him, yes, the fan shroud is painted green. No one else gets that.
Usually the crank shaft on deeres engines used in lawn and garden equipment is a different size. They do this so you have to come to them for a replacement engine or internal engine parts.
Briggs engines for Deere are indeed built to JD specs... aren’t exactly the same that you’ll see in MTD ... that being said , i’d avoid B+S in my equipment whenever possible

Thank you, Taryl, very informative. i bought an X300 from a JD dealer in 2012...he went to great lengths to tell me the JD lawn tractor sold by Home Depot back then was made by Briggs and Scrap'em. He said the main difference was the frame, the X300 had a much stronger frame, so I believed him and bought it. No regrets, still running strong today.
I have a 1995 John Deere straight shaft line trimmer that was made by Echo. What an awesome machine! I still use that trimmer every week from March through October during my mowing season here and it will start on the 3rd pull cold, first pull when warm. So far, the only thing I've had to do is replace the fuel line and 1 carburetor due to my using ethanol fuel one year.
Echo makes great products.
I have two of those Deere trimmers. I use them as dedicated brush cutters. Well one the shaft is toast so it is a dedicated parts donor now.
I had a Deere handheld blower made by Homelite. Flawless through 15 mowing seasons until I upgraded to an Echo backpack blower. Homelite is cheap crap now.
I had the same weed eater and chainsaw made by Echo. Both were great.

I especially enjoy when people tell me that the box store John Deere is powered by John Deere! That is until I point out the Briggs and Stratton logo on the valve cover!
Yes, but you better be using GENUINE "John Deere" oil, otherwise your warranty is void! LOL
I got the same thing when I did service on two John Deere X570s for a church. The guy went on about the engine being “John Deere powered” until I pointed out they both had Kawasaki V-Twins on them and were no different from one you’d see on any other high end riding mower.

John Deere, Harley Davidson, and any foreign luxury car...they all know how to (over) charge for parts!
Aftermarket companies cant make a profit making cheaper parts for niche markets. Not many people own those brands compared to the others so if you need parts, you have to pay top dollar for oem parts. And as they age the parts just get more rare and expensive.
Bottom line is you pay more...way more.@@GeorgeJefferson-h7w
Not even just foreign luxury. Basically any European vehicle and they're all made to break frequently, like VW.
Thanks for this video and the sage words of advice and also the eye opening reveal about lawn products and price points. I have found that most good "Commercial" mowers are in the $5500+ range and then UP. Just started running a SCAG SWZT walk behind 36" for getting thru gates and narrow paths. Wow what a nice machine. Has the Kawa-Sucki engine... which BTW starts on first pull. I do shut off the gas petcock and then let it run dry at idle after each use. No bowl sludge from the ethanol that way. I do follow the Kawasaki instructions by warming it up for about 3 mins before taking off to mow and then let is cool down at idle as mentioned. Hey keep up the good work and we all appreciate the enormous amount of effort it takes to produce these videos. Say hi to SLIPPERS for me... ha ha... Art in CT

Scotts brand tractors sold at the box stores were also made by John Deere. Some Snapper tractors were made at the Lawrenceville TN Murray plant after Briggs bought Snapper. The list goes on and it's always been a regular business practice to do Private labeling. Sears was a prime example. Kenmore, Craftsman, J.C. Higgins, Ted Williams etc... were all made by contractors for Sears.
That applies to everything made at Sears, the were not a manufacturer but found the best bang for your product at that time. Took some brand names and dropped the price by putting Sears or Craftsman on them.
The beginning of the end started when they rebranded Comm Chinese products.

Do you mean the Lawrenceburg, TN Murray plant? I worked there back in 1996. At that time, if it came down the line and was yellow and blue it was a Lowe's mower, if it was that pinkish red it was a Murray, if it was darker red it was a Huskee, If it was green it was called an Ultra, if it was grey it was a Craftsman mower. Some things were different about them: Ones for Walmart always used a cheaper transaxle that you had to shift, used cheaper line motors from either Briggs or Tecumseh, used cheaper tires, seats, steering wheels, and a different hood stamping. The Craftsman mowers all had a better transaxle, a higher grade engine, and seats, tires, rims, rubber foot treads and steering wheels that looked nicer and said 'Craftsman' on them. The frames, decks, foot boards, front axle, steering components, etc... were all the same. That's how they were built.
Badge engineering at its finest. I used to work at a John Deere plant where we made construction equipment, Liebherr made crawlers right along side the Deere machines there.
Yanmar And Hitachi made excavators for Deere.

I used to work for Brinley-Hardy co. back in the late 80’s they made stuff for everybody. We just changed paint and decals to suit their colors.
I tell you what, ever since i became a diesel mechanic,i have gotten to the nitty and gritty of things and are astonished of how these companies get over on folks.. So now with certain things, i dont even look at the name brand anymore.
Makita used to sell chain saws. Makita was an electric tool company. Dolmar made their orange chain saws in blue for them.
Over here in Australia, greenfield is the weapon of choice. I have a redmax the diff fell out of so I wish I had a greenfield. The repair here will be one of those RUclips (hope this works) series lol
The wildest I ever heard was back in the '70s a factory in Arizona was making evaporative air conditioners, aka swamp coolers, for 400 different brands. They changed the paint and logo, otherwise they were identical.
Automotive batteries. there are just a few manufacturers, but lots of labels to stick on them.
And 24 years now all the big box store AKA 100 series Deere decks are interchangeable with all the modes under the 100 series such as L,LA,d, E and S and only thing to know is that the rear hangers are one of two kinds and just be sure to get the hangers with the deck so it will fit. Other than that it’s cake walk.
And if it’s a 48” with electric PTO it’s actually better to swap over to the Craftsamn/husqvarna deck of the same era because those 48” decks were of much better quality than deere 100 series 48” decks. I show how to swap the decks with no major modifications on my channel.
At 3:00, briggs and JD tweak their push mower engines, I needed a part for the recoil, JD only. I switched the whole damn top to run-of-the-mill briggs for less than the JD parts I needed to fix the original
MTD has been doing this for decades. They sell their own brand name garden tractors but they also make several models for other brand names as well. Many of the light duty big box store garden tractors are just rebranded MTD's.

Technically speaking, they are not garden tractors--they're just residential-grade riding lawnmowers with the engine in the front. A Garden Tractor is a different, high dollar machine, built stout and designed to run implements front and rear.

At one point before I bought a real old school Deere from the 1980s I was looking at others online. Being I didn’t rly know what I do I asked my dad abt it. He told me exactly what you’re saying. Ford did it with their ranger, with Mazda, & a few others.
Pretty much the Deere’s available at homedepot are throwaway. The good ones are at the dealer.
At the time I didn’t care if it ran of not, just good signs of if it’ll run so I bought my First John Deere 212 that was almost 7yrs ago this year.
Love my 212, & when you see the old school all metal quality back then it’s rly hard to get anything new unless you go straight to the commercial stuff from Scag or at the dealer above the 300 series.
Ryobi weedeaters was made by Weedeater brand at one time. I also found out that Hyper Tough was made by Murray at one time.

Keystone beer is the cheaper version of Coors beer made in the same brewery in Golden Colorado.
A/C Delco made shock absorbers for Ford and Chrysler. The internals was the same in all three. Painted factory colors.
All John Deere riding mowers are cheaply made from Home Depot. DO NOT buy one from H.D. if you have 1/2 acre or more or you’ll burn out the rear end. I have about 3/4 acre or a tad more and bought a JD X300 from a JD store back in 2010. I service it and it still runs like it did when it was new.
The way congress passes all kinds of laws there should be a law of truth in who actually makes the items. I remember the story about Jeep being made out of parts from other companies and you had to know the day the Jeep was made as to see if it had a Ford or Chevy engine in it that day. My dad repaired home appliances like stoves and washing machines. Many brands used other parts inside. and that was around 1965.
When I bought a house with a large yard Ai went to the Deere dealer and thought I was buying quality. Turns out it was one of the cheap mowers like the sold at Lowes and the transmission quit on me around 300 hours just like many others did.
Lots of confusion AMC merged with Jeep along with Kaiser. Some of their motors had the same displacement as GM and Dodge motors and people confused that. I believe the 360 was one such example
The 1990's JD lawnmowers with the Kawasaki FV rotary mower engines that came with a pressurised oil system and a car grade oil filter are near indestructible ...
still using mine 30 years later on the third chassis.....

Remember the days when companies built brand recognition and loyalty by trying to build the best products they could build? What a quaint and silly time that was...
They're trying to give people what they want. Nobody wants to keep and maintain quality equipment for 35 years. Most would rather get a shiny new piece of junk every 2 years.
Just tried to buy a John Deere S170 at Lowe's, and it was $3500 with tax. It's a top of line 100 series, and basically the current Special Edition model with the big wheels and nice seat, for those that know about Special Edition models. I was expecting a perfect, brand new unit. But the Lowe's delivery people tried delivering one with a big 5" vertical scuff mark on the hood side, along with other hood scuffs and random fender deck scratches. I had written instructions which said that I would not accept and would reject a unit with cosmetic, mechanical or performance issues on delivery...but they selected to attempt delivery of one with paint damage anyway. I rejected it and told them to told them to take it back. I was even insulted on my own property by the Lowe's delivery individuals because I was apparently too picky, and that I shouldn't be expecting a perfect copy from Lowe's. What's worse is I tried to manage that bullshit beforehand by going to the store with 5 of them and asking to inspect the one that would be delivered (or I'd even pick it up)...and basically told no, they were too busy despite there being no one in the store yet. So when you see that $200 rebate or that $200 discount, you're getting a unit with paint damage. Nobody from the store even called back to ask what happened. That's what you get when you aren't buying from the dealer. It soured the sale so much, that I'm basically keeping my 15 year old model and am refurbishing it now.
Red Wing makes good boots. In 2015 I needed a new pair but ended up buying two. One was the same model I had which is made in USA and the other was the same price but made in China I found out after I got them home.
That means Red Wing will kill their brand
@@hugoglenn9741 It's possible! They made a name for themselves by making very high quality made in America boots that would last several years of daily work use. And they are very comfortable once broken in. The selling point of these Chinese ones were that they have a "king toe" which has more wiggle room, and require less break in. They are lighter too so I thought I'd give them a try. Not bad, but not worth the price and they wore out on the inside like a regular shoe would.
There is more and more partnerships happening as time goes on, keeping costs and price-points inline and trying to stay relevant in the marketplace. Good for a reminder of the practise, an informed consumer is a better consumer. Cheers.
They made snow mobiles. I can paint my shovel John Deere green and put one of their stickers on it and sell it for 5 times more money 🤠
I miss SEARS I had a riding tractor mower and a self-driven walk behind mower with extended warranties. Damn things lasted for 13 to 15 years, and the warranties were great. Now it's all crap it's let's see who can rip off people the most. The tractor lawnmower cost me $599 with a great lawnmower warranty it failed 2 times but SEARS no problem will come and get it and repair it and bring it back to you. Now I bought one for $3,900 and it has been a nightmare. Total garbage. I took it back after fighting Lowes with a lawsuit got all of my money refunded. Now I have a lawn service for $80 a month a great guy, I Don't need this pain in the butt stuff anymore with overpriced garbage that's out there at my age.
I had a John Deere's 440 liquid cooled snowmobiles. They had kawasuki motor.
I’ve always been a Wheel Horse guy , but bought my first John Deere….. a 1966 model 110. I look forward to many years of mowing with it

Like a guy said, when buying those green parts…. You can buy better, but you can’t pay more.
I remember in the early 70’s John Deere small walk behind mowers were rebadged Toro Whirlwind mowers. The entire mower was identical to a Toro Whirlwind right down to the bag assembly and the under-deck muffler, only difference was it was painted green and had the trademark JD red shifter knobs on the throttle and self propel levers. JC Penny offered rebadged Toro Whirlwind mowers back then too, same thing with a different color and logo.
John Deere also had weedeaters that were made in Japan by Mitsubishi. They had a yellow power head and the shaft was steel and painted black.
Those were good trimmers and blowers!
I remember years ago when Wal Mart wanted to sell Snapper mowers, but had to be manufactured somewhere else at a lesser quality. The Snapper guy turned them down.
Walmart did sell "Snapper" mowers. Snapper was owned by Briggs who also owned Murray mowers. The "Snapper" labeled mowers at Walmart were made by Murray.

My John Deere chainsaw was made by efco in the year 2000 and it is one great running saw, I use it every year and cut a lot of wood. I also still have a Sabre made by John Deere back in 97, they were similar to the STX series of mowers and were quite reliable.
Efco (Italian brand) are very good. I have a weedwacker similar generation to your chainsaw and it is reliable and hardy. Passed down to me by my father in law in 2008 and still going.
I operated a tree service for 25 plus years. Sold Efco Power Equipment (and used them in my business) during that time. The brand quickly became my go to choice. Many repeat customers. Second choice, Echo.

I worked for a company YEARS ago, they made crapsman and John deer lawn mowers and also made snowboarders. The funny part is, we made lawn mowers in the winter time and we made snowboarders in the summer time. The company's name was NOMA. which was owned by a bunch of Canadians.
Almost all cheap tools and machines from great manufacturers (Stihl for example or Briggs&Stratton and many others) are made now in China and no more in the States or in Germany, Sweden etc....
An old original B&S Vanguard was built (in Japan) for minimum 1500 till 3000H guaranted without any issue or special maintenance, An Intek B&S built in China...is only 900h guaranted, but always with the same name, and it's somewhere a robbery for most non informed buyers who only pay attention to the logo B&S.
Actually it's impossible to know exactly what we buy.....in particular now with added unuseful and not reliable electronic parts . The visible "progress" hides most of all (deliberately?) a lot of possible and very expensive issues , and cannot be repared by ourselves.

I don't buy brand named equipment. They want to much money. Craftsman rider, MTD tractor. Same thing.
Back in 2017 I needed a new brush cutter so I went to the local Stihl dealer mainly because everyone told me not to get a cheap Chinese one so I bought a fs55 got home and read the sticker underneath the engine and it said made by Stihl manufactured in China 😔

Who made the John Deere walk behind mowers of the late eighties through the 90s. These were the SB series I think what's a Kawasaki on it. Now that was the absolute best mower on the planet bar none and go through a foot of grass never bogged down and kick it out the back. Made every other more look like it was going backwards.
Deere made those. They were made in the same plant that now produces most of the lawn tractors you see at Home Depot and Lowes and the dealers. Same with the zero turns. Those were built until Deere got out of the walk behinds in 2003-2004? I believe it was.
Deere parts here in Canada are STOOOPID!!! i needed to cvhange a small hyd cylinder on my tractor steering .. OVER $700.00

The shorter style John Deere pressure washers with the wider pneumatic tires are made by Mi-T-M. If the JD riding mower doesn't doesn't say made in Horicon Wisconsin, it's their price point mower made in Tennessee.

All those companies that make products for John Deere don't actually make them either, they buy them from ACME and those made during Coyote's shift are bad but the ones made during Roadrunner's shift are of good quality 😅 Meep Meep!

ADD ONE MORE: If you truly want to understand the level of deceit, put the engine from virtually any lawn product on a dyno. They advertise horsepower at high levels but actually produce substantially less. It's hard to believe some enterprising lawyer hasn't figured this out yet.
When you said Homelite the first thing I remembered was an ST-100. The engine was down where the head is and the tube the handles were on were the fuel tank. I thought it was a bit of an odd design. Even today it would be strange design since I don't see it any more. This was 40 years (not exact) ago or so that we had that. It was a typical 2 stroke since it was often a real pain in the neck to start. I am sure that everyone who had anything 2 stroke has dealt with the nightmare of a hard to start engine. That is just how fussy some of those things are!!

i'm glad i sold my cub cadet mower and went back to a walk behind self propelled mower. i was tired of getting ripped off for expensive parts either through them directly or from partstree. lucky for me my yard is manageable to do walking.

Liebherr also makes their small payloaders. Smaller tractors are literally Yanmar tractors painted green. Says made in Japan by Yanmar right on the serial tag.
JD and Hitachi had a joint venture in Kernersville NC, they were some minor differences, in the last few years they dissolved that plant and now it’s strictly JD manufactured there
I've got a pal with an older 490 that states 'Made for John Deere by Hitachi Coorporation' on the plate.
I had a really old chainsaw,John Deere green, it was made by Remington after I dud some detective work, I didn't know JD bought homelite at the time,I have seen that brand switch done for a long time, thumbs up great video
I stopped buying John Deere products when John Deere himself no longer made them. After that it was ALWAYS someone else making them. 😉😉
These manufacturers aren't doing themselves any favors by rebadging. What's the difference between Temu and the John Deere dealership? The implied quality the brand puts into their product and the willingness to stand behind it if it fails.
I’ve got a JD branded Homelite saw on my bench… made looking for parts tricky. Right know I’m looking at my JD riding mower, and an old Craftsman that’s darn near visually the same unit.
Homelite is actually a TTI brand now, they make Milwaukee and Ryobi too, which do really well on the Torque Test Channel. TTI is China, but good products. They make some stuff in USA, and invested in Wisconsin to make a research facility. So kept some good roots in USA, and the design-work is USA.

Surprised JD doesn't have that part talking to the computer control module so an "authorized" technician needs to make a trip out to assure the computer that the new part is authorized and it's okay for it to be in the machine, like they do with their big tractors. The only JDs I will buy now are antiques without a computer network in them, as per Battlestar Galactica.
I'm sure the other tractor companies are looking at Mother Deere and saying "Hold my beer".

I ended up buying a TYM compact the t25 last year , John deere is a little to proud of that green paint like 10k more !
I used to repair appliances for sears and the inbreeding was rampant. Lol i think sears was one of the first to start that practice pretty early in thier existence.
Mitsubishi made the XT series trimmers for John Deere as well. Great units tbh.
Yeah, Chevy trucks that say they have Allison Transmissions in them are deceiving too. Allison doesn't build the transmission. They gave GM's transmission their stamp of approval.
