Dr. Bob Utley was screaming about proof texting and arrogance which is ironic. First, I've never heard any biblical complementarian ignore the verses that talk about women both prophesying and speaking in tongues. This is such a straw man argument and a total misrepresentation of the complementarian position. This gets amens from masses who haven't seriously studied these passages. Let me point this out for any listeners of this message. Go back and read the passage in 1 Corinthians 11 that speaks about a woman covering her head. It was to show she was under authority. Paul's case is not made from culture so people wouldn't be offended; he makes his case from creation and design. How can you say this has two voices, therefore it can be written off as culture? You shopped archeological bits of the secular culture of Corinth to write off an argument Paul makes from creation. I didn't catch this but did he actually read 1 Corinthians 14:33-36 during his message? He never explains why women were not allowed to speak in reference to interpreting prophesy... Oh and by the way, if prophesy here simply means preaching the gospel why would the need interpreters? I would encourage you to read this whole passage. 1 Corinthians 14:33-38 (ESV) 33 For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, 34 the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. 35 If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. 36 Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? 37 If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. 38 If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. Now as he rightly points out women were free to pray and to prophesy in church but as Paul explains in 1 Timothy 2:11-12 (ESV) 11 Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. 12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet. We could also look at Ephesians 5 or back to Genesis 2 and 3 but the point is clear there are biblically defined roles. Let me be clear women are absolutely vital to church ministry and leadership. Paul doesn't say men are better or more saved than women. Men and women are equal in value and salvation but differing in roles. Again, see that his point is made not from culture but from creation. We want women and men to thrive in the God ordained roles God has assigned them. Women must be encouraged and equipped for all types of ministry in the church barring any authority or teaching role over men. Husbands, as we see in Ephesians 5 have a sacrificial shepherding role over his wife that mirrors Christ and the church. While we are in mutual submission, sacrificial love for one another, the church is not head over Christ but in submission to Christ. This doesn't describe the harsh male patriarchy as he describes and it also doesn't describe the disorder and neutered egalitarian, do as you feel chaos he advocates for. Why is this so important and why can't there be an agreement to disagree? This comes back to how we view scripture. Is scripture inerrant? If so, it matters how we approach it. If we start writing things off as ambiguous then there is no stopping it. That is why many denominations that have ordained women are now opening to blessing homosexuality. It matters. Like he said read your scriptures and search them out.
Mr. Minister or whoever you are, you're missing the point. Read the chapter properly. The Bible clearly states Christ is the head of man, man is the head of the woman the head of Christ is God. If a man cover his head in church, he dishonor God, if a woman do not cover her head in church, she dishonor the man.
WE LOVE YOU DR. UTLEY! THANK YOU FOR YOUR ENTHUSIASM, YOUR ENERGY AND YOUR SINCERITY ! MAY HE CONTINUE TO BLESS YOU AND YOUR WHOLE FAMILY!
thank you
I agree with his conclusion, but here are some scriptures I wish he used: Galtians 3:8, Acts 2:17-18😄
