To all the critics. I would never have even known of this song if Joss & Jeff had not done what I think is a beautiful version. I will be looking up the original and ALL of the lyrics. And Thank You bringing it to my attention.
I done things for "her majesty" 4 tours at the front line . Was afew years ago now tho I can't let them images go. Keep going over in my head . But it was do something or have something done to me or my brothers at that time. But it always sticks in your mind. I hope the God people fought for is there . God bless .
Doing all that for a German woman who sits on a throne and laughs at her slaves you brits are sad ,try doing something for the land of your birth instead ,get up off your knees in a Republic every man and women are born as equals ,you fought to keep your masters above you .
Joss and Jeff were offical British Legion Poppy performers. If Bogle felt his lyric was being disrespected I would hope he had some say about that. Joss is a soulful blues singer and her passion and delivery honours the lives and spirit of the fallen. The closing caption is to the memory of the fallen men and women. It's not an invitation to debate your personal taste or thoughts on lyrical content. They gave their time and commitment to honour those who served. Deal with it.
@@oldmanghost219 Eric was NOT happy with this arrangement. But he was diplomatic, if not restrained, in his critique. He is, after all, a perfect gentleman.
Bogle did respond it is best it you google it because although he is not a fan in the end he says something to the effect of that it is okay with him if it makes others aware.
Overproduced, overdramatised and completely misses the point that the senseless slaughter of brave young men continues to this day - which is what Eric Bogle presented in a far more humble and meaningful way.
Song written by Eric Bogle.. this shortened version crops off the second half of the song reducing the intended impact of antiwar sentiment. This version just seems too fluffy for me. (and what's with the "misleading " written by Jacques Brel?)
This is a sickly sweet sanitized version that omits completely the Anti war ethos of the song written by Eric Bogle. I suppose mentions of "butchered and damned" wouldn't sit well with this version which makes the 1st World War sound like a good night out. These are the missing lyrics Or are you a stranger without even a name? Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane In an old photograph torn, tattered, and stained And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame Did they beat the drums slowly? Did they play the fife lowly? Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down? Did the band play the last post and chorus? Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest? The sun shining down on these green fields of France The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance The trenches have vanished long under the plow No gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now But here in this graveyard that's still no man's land The countless white crosses in mute witness stand To man's blind indifference to his fellow man And a whole generation were butchered and damned . Chorus And I can't help but wonder, oh Willie McBride Do all those who lie here know why they died? Did you really believe them when they told you the cause? Did you really believe that this war would end wars? Well, the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame The killing and dying it was all done in vain Oh Willie McBride, it all happened again And again, and again, and again, and again Chorus
The song is not about any Easter uprising in Ireland, not at all, it is a song about the thousands and thousands of young mainly British soldiers who were sent to their deaths in France in WW1, and all soldiers who have died in all wars since
Seems to me like an over the top "Hollywood" production where they completely miss the whole point of this great anti war song to the fallen. Very disrespectful
An insult to this deep song. The lyrics "was butchered and downed" The conclusion of this song is in the last verse: And I can't help but wonder now Willie McBride Do all those who lie here know why they died? Did you really believe them when they told you the cause? Did you really believe that this war would end war? But the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame - The killing, the dying - it was all done in vain For Willie McBride, it's all happened again And again, and again, and again, and again
Absolutely awful version of a brilliant anti war song . This has to be the worst version of I’ve ever heard . Jos Stone just doesn’t have the right voice for this song for a start . There’s just so many things wrong with this version . Absolute rubbish ! This is an insult to a great song ! In my opinion if you want to hear this song sung as it should be then listen to the Clancy Brothers or my favourite version by The men they couldn’t hang .
From someone who has never heard the original this is a beutifully recorded song, love it for what it is.

God bless every man/women who's ever served .
This might be the most jarring cover of any song I've ever heard. And I've heard the cover of this same song by 1914.
This is the best version, no more war 🙌🏽
Absolutely brutal version of Eric Bogle's song!
Fuck me that is awful far worse than Hi Hol silver lining

Noted historic reverence. Epic Dress. Gorgeous hair, and makeup. Jolly good showing!

The inconvenient last verse left off.
Along with the third verse. But then, whose counting?
Love this, I love joss version of it ❤️
Overproduced, overdramatised and completely misses the point that the senseless slaughter of brave young men continues to this day - which is what Eric Bogle presented in a far more humble and meaningful way.
Tan hermoso todo ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤🇦🇷🇦🇷
Anyone here because of Hannah Van Der Westhuysen 🧚♀️✨
Me :)
I am here because of Jeff & Joss otherwise I would never have know of this song.

These are the missing lyrics
Or are you a stranger without even a name?
Forever enshrined behind some old glass pane
In an old photograph torn, tattered, and stained
And faded to yellow in a brown leather frame
Did they beat the drums slowly?
Did they play the fife lowly?
Did they sound the death march as they lowered you down?
Did the band play the last post and chorus?
Did the pipes play the flowers of the forest?
The sun shining down on these green fields of France
The warm wind blows gently and the red poppies dance
The trenches have vanished long under the plow
No gas, no barbed wire, no guns firing now
But here in this graveyard that's still no man's land
The countless white crosses in mute witness stand
To man's blind indifference to his fellow man
And a whole generation were butchered and damned
.
Chorus
And I can't help but wonder, oh Willie McBride
Do all those who lie here know why they died?
Did you really believe them when they told you the cause?
Did you really believe that this war would end wars?
Well, the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame
The killing and dying it was all done in vain
Oh Willie McBride, it all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again
Chorus
What a disgraceful debasement of Eric Bogle's song.
It’s a little too American Baptist church I’m the south for a song about the 1916 Easter uprising in Ireland.
It's a little too not about the 1916 Easter Rising at all for a song about the 1916 Easter "up" rising in Ireland.
The song is not about any Easter uprising in Ireland, not at all, it is a song about the thousands and thousands of young mainly British soldiers who were sent to their deaths in France in WW1, and all soldiers who have died in all wars since
What.....?! Have you been snorting your Valium again Aethal? Let's try 'n' keep up here, eh?
Conveniently missing the strong anti-war message of Eric Bogle's original song
Seems to me like an over the top "Hollywood" production where they completely miss the whole point of this great anti war song to the fallen. Very disrespectful
No emotion or heartfelt sadness at all in this horrendous version.
But it is The Green Field's of France by Eric Bogle
Yes, The Green Fields of France (Fr) OR No Man's Land (Eng).
so... "But" what?
What do you mean by (Fr) and (Eng)? The song was written by a Scotsman living in Australia and this is a particularly butchered version!
Virgil Moldovan "But" why is Eric Bogle's song falsely credited to Jacques Brel?
This is bad, and you should feel bad for destroying the original
An insult to this deep song. The lyrics "was butchered and downed"
The conclusion of this song is in the last verse:
And I can't help but wonder now Willie McBride
Do all those who lie here know why they died?
Did you really believe them when they told you the cause?
Did you really believe that this war would end war?
But the suffering, the sorrow, the glory, the shame -
The killing, the dying - it was all done in vain
For Willie McBride, it's all happened again
And again, and again, and again, and again
