INNER SANCTUM Mystery is a radio drama that originally aired on the Blue Network between January 7, 1941, and October 5, 1952. It was created by producer Himan Brown and was based on the imprint given to the mystery novels of Simon & Schuster.
The program's familiar and famed audio trademark was the eerie creaking door which opened and closed the broadcasts. Himan Brown got the idea from a door in the basement. The door sound was actually made by a rusty desk chair. The stories mixed horror and humor in equal doses.
Film stars who appeared on the program included: Bela Lugosi, Mary Astor, Helen Hayes, Peter Lorre, Paul Lukas, Claude Rains, Frank Sinatra, and Orson Welles. Most of the lead and supporting players were stalwarts of New York radio. These included Santos Ortega, Larry Haines, Ted Osborne, Luis van Rooten, Stefan Schnabel, Ralph Bell, Mercedes McCambridge, Berry Kroeger, Arnold Moss, Leon Janney, Myron McCormick, and Mason Adams.
Players like Richard Widmark, Everett Sloane, Burgess Meredith, Agnes Moorehead, Ken Lynch, and Anne Seymour also found fame or notability in film or television. A total of 527 episodes were produced, but a majority are presumed to be lost. Less than 200 are known to exist today.

I love reading the names of the people who star in these, and the writers, recognizing so many of them. Yeah, telling on myself, and how old I am. (I'm 65) And my parents, being born in '34,had me familiar with those from their generation. Enjoying these shows, especially to go to sleep by. But I have to go back to where I remember last to catch up on what I missed, the next time. I don't want to miss a thing, not a clue, not a nuance. And I love not having to try to turn to try to see a TV set, and being able to just listen and let my imagination paint the scenes.

The scariest part of these tales is all the Colgate Toothpaste Powder washed down with Carter’s Little Liver Pills…
No wonder they were always hearing strange grumblings and screams and seeing strange ethereal visions….
    😳
Thanks so much for posting these utterly brilliant episodes.

I Was hoping someone knew the name of a radio show that opened with a better sounding creaky door and the host would say GOOD EVENING AND WELCOME TO....
I can't remember the rest. It was an old time radio show.( Horror stories,) The intro sounded like inner sanctum, but it was a better newer type version of it. Some of the best stories ull ever hear. If anybody remembers the name of that show pls let me know. 💯.
