Good luck, good to hear. This guy is an inspiration and shows age is just an excuse.. I was quite a good runner until my mid 40s when i gave up the running club for family commitments but never ran more than a 1/2 in about 1:36 ( i can only do about 1:55 now i reckon). I have kept reasonably fit but having turned 60 am getting as fit as i can. I run 3 times as week, 13, 6 and 4 miles, plus out on my bike twice and do strength training which is essential when you turn 50 due to muscle loss
I recently completed an ultra, but nothing like the Western States. To those that don't know, a race of that magnitude (heat and massive elevation changes) would destroy 99.99% of people on the planet. It isn't for the faint of heart. To do it at 72 is not just amazing and inspiring- it is super human. Wally...I love your spirit and indomitable will. You. Are. A. Beast!!!
I'm 67 years old i have been running for 43 years but i don't like competition i love to run and to walk every day before sun rise i walk 1 or 2 miles to warm up then i run 10 miles and about 6 houers lator i walk 3 miles and then i run 12 more miles and after dinner i walk 4 more miles and i do this from monday to saturday and sunday i walk 25 miles in the day i do 211 miles per week every week and i'll keep doing it for as long as i can
Omg this had me in tears almost the whole way through.🤧💗💗💗 So inspirational! My 73 year old mom won't even vacuum. Even in older age, people are not the same, their true character will shine through. So much respect and admiration for this dad and grandfather!!🏆
When he stumbled on the track I was just bawling. These are the runners that inspire me. Yes the big name runners are cool, but it's the people I don't know, I love their stories so much. Did he run the 2017 race?
You mean that you wish you get into Western States 100 then just miss the final cutoff of 30 hours at the finish line??? Why not wish that you officially finish Western States 100 when you are 72???
It is sad that he was not able to complete the run within the given time. I can only hope he is able to monitor his timed distances and is able to crack it in 2017. Love and best wishes from the UK.
Neil Badger I looked up western states on twitter and they have done it already for 2017. Wally got a "DNF" result. I was so bummed!!! I'm 20 and would probably stop at 10km. Hope he does it again and gets the time he deserves it 👌
Really an inspiration for all of us. Well, it directly shows one thing; age is just a number and it can never become an obstacle if we are dedicated and devoted to our fitness. Respect to Wally Hesseltine!!!
Congratulations for your video, I was walking mixed by slow jogging 80 km per day for 60 days(Athens 15th international ultra marathon festival 2020 in age 64) I did 4750 kilometers! In total time 60 days, What do u think? Is that good?.😊😊.
I am 70 YEARS young. Did a MARATHON OCTOBER 4 2020 4 hrs 12 sec. and preparing to run a half Marathon OCTOBER 17 ans a Ultra Marathon 50k + 10 to 14 days later. IT is my objective and a dream for now.
So sad. He missed it by tens of seconds in 2016. I too had a goal of doing a race per month in 2015. But my goal was a marathon a month. Then I upgraded that to an ultra marathon a month in 2015 and surpassed that goal. Wally does a race a month but he does a short race just in case he can't finish a longer one. By short, I assume he means a 5K.
What an inspiration. At 50 I’m training for my first half marathon after losing 70 lbs. then on to a marathon and an ultra eventually

I want to know who gave up his spot for 2017, to give to Wally. Whoever it was, is a stud. Big thumbs up to that person...
I think it was the man that won two raffle tickets. He kept one and gave one to Wally.
Gloria King - how could someone win 2 tickets?
No hype, that last push brought me to tears..the human spirit can't be put into words in moments like that..huge inspiration, all the power to ya!!
I crying right now :'( :D What a hero!! If I can run like that when I'm 72 I will be so HAPPY!! Thanks for a magical video!!
Run Fredrik Run! I cried too!
Run Fredrik Run! I
I didn't cry. But it is a sad ending when he doesn't make it by tens of seconds.
He only missed the cut off by 30 seconds or so. Not a big deal for a runner that old. Nothing to be sad about.
Yea I was crying when i seen it too! I just want to run 10 miles.

Me to
You have your elite runners who are amazing at what they do, but then you have people like Wally who are just true warriors. Inspiring!
I think I found a new hero in the running world! Great job, young man!
Omg this had me in tears almost the whole way through.🤧💗💗💗 So inspirational! My 73 year old mom won't even vacuum.

I met this guy yesterday. Such a cool dude. !!!
Very inspirational !
Hope to see you again soon Mr Wally!

Be at the finish during golden hour of Leadville 100 - totally awesome.
Where is the love button for this? Such an inspiration
I’m running my first 100 miler next month. I’ve watched this at least 10 times. Wally is an inspiration during those hard miles to keep going
Unfortunately he DNF'd in 2017 but he's still running 50Ks in 2021 at the age of 77. Go Wally!!!!
This is so beautiful and so emotional. Wally is a hero.
Very moving...
Great gesture from whoever gave up there spot too
"I'D LIKE TO RUN TIL THE DAY I DIE" . THAT'S what I'm talking about! 😁 This was beautiful!
This was so emotional, I cried. Such an inspiration.
Been along time since I got that emotional about running I needed that. Congrats Wally!
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
What a fantastic story! And very well depicted.
Absolutely Awesome! Congrats Wally! This is why I love running! Don't ever quit!
OMG, I’m so proud of him. You’re my hero.!!
Really inspiring! Might even have shed a manly tear or two
This is the best video I've ever scene.
Greatness courts failure and this man defines the moment. He defines it as exceptional. He's a 'Finisher' in everyone's eyes. Everyone that matters.
That is amazing. I wish I can do that when I am 72. Very inspirational.

Tears pretty much start to finish. So inspiring.
I spy a Sage Canaday at 4:31!
Also, wow.
The main reason I run hard: So my daughter won't think her dad is a loser, at least I do something well.
My daughter is a big reason I run too, I can’t bear the thought of being her fat dad.
You have my utter respect ✊🏼
I cryd when i first time watch this video...love it so much cause i would like to become grandpa like this legend!
Awesome - Wally - thank you for the inspiration - be great!
It is sad that he was not able to complete the run within the given time. I can only hope he is able to monitor his timed distances and is able to crack it in 2017. Love and best wishes from the UK.

What a finish! He's truly a hero!
There is a WS100 buckle in 2017 with Wally's name on it.
Just think. Had he spent one minute less at an aid station, he'd have made it.
Truly inspiring!
great video is he still running today?
Would be interesting to know how he showed this toughness in his early life -- his education, where he served in Vietnam, etc
A true inspiration . 👏
Absolute legend 🔥
Wally is a warrior for seniors Wally is a an example to kids dont quit or sterotype an older person !
FANTASTIC, CONGRATULATIONS
Many thanks!!
Love this video. Did he finish this year?
I am 70 YEARS young. Did a MARATHON OCTOBER 4 2020 4 hrs 12 sec. and preparing to run a half Marathon OCTOBER 17 ans a Ultra Marathon 50k + 10 to 14 days later. IT is my objective and a dream for now.

He is great a great runner I salute you.
Does anyone know if he finished in 2017 or is planning to run again this year?

"I really like running" - Wally
Amazing!
True warrior!
Well done Wally!

Uh oh, I started crying 28 seconds in...

Did Wally run WS in 2017?
Amazing.
hey fellow classmates!
Wow wow wow!
Respect....
he is my HERO.
God:
Give the strength to get to this age and be half the man this guys is
It's a pity that most part of this video is in slow motion! This makes Wally looking running much slower than he actually does.
There is a reason why they call it the "old man shuffle"...
A lot respect
awesome :-)
It’s always that last bit and all those people putting all that pressure, seems like it over exerts the mind and body, btw ur tough as nails old man
anyone know the musical score in the background?
Ahora tengo un nuevo HEROE !!!!
Close enough.
Awesome that his bib number was his age.
Come back next year stronger and take the record proper.
Wally!
