However Fury should have beaten Ngannou easily, whether he took it seriously or not, unless Ngannou is much better than he is given credit for. It was a freak show initially, but Ngannou went toe to toe with an elite boxer, arguably the best in his division, if not a generation and lost by the slimmest margins and for AJ this is as good as any fight available for him, with the IBF tied up, Wilder's shock defeat against Parker and Fury fighting Usyk for the undisputed. Even Conor mcgregor who was in peak form and knocking out people with puches and had just won his second belt, fought mayweather who was 40 2 years retired, and was admittedly not training hard crushed him. Yeah Conor landed one punch that caught Mayweathers attention but for most of the fight he was throwing wierd punches that looked like hammer fists and by the end he could barely lift his arms he was so exhausted. AJ's post-Usyk rebuild was supposed to include Jermaine Franklin, Dillain Whyte & Otto Wallin, along with an already agreed two-fight deal with Deontay Wilder only for all of that to fall apart because of 1/2) Whyte popped dirty, 2/2) Wilder lost to Joseph Parker. Tyson Fury handpicked 39-year-old Derek Chisora who had lost 3 of his last 5 fights for his 3rd title defence. He then followed that up with a fight against Ngannou, who was making his boxing debut. All of this also occurred amid Fury quite clearly ducking Usyk, even after Usyk had accepted the 70-30 split. Simon is oversimplifying this. It was not the Saudis who staged Fury vs Chisora. It is disingenuous to make it seem as if the Saudis are just making gimmicky fights.

Same with Wilder, he never threw a punch until he got clocked in the third, that wasn't Fury & Wilder in those fights & it's because Warren & Hearn stand to make a vast fortune out of it, they only said that Usyk (23rd) & Joshua fights were happening to generate interest (& it worked) & not surprisingly both fights got cancelled......

The mistake these folks make is they are generalizing MMA fighters. Francis Nganouu to me is the exception. For instance Jon jones to me is the all time greatest mma fighter and probably would beat Nganou in mma. He would get murdered inside the ring with any of those heavyweights. Ngannou in his mind has always been a boxer. He didn’t even know what MMA was months before he started competing in it and had to be talked away from boxing into mma because it was easier to get an mma fight. The fact that he went on to be a UFC champion despite that not even being his passion and him starting training it at 26 should tell people what an exceptional athlete he is. Not to mention his life story. He’s not a threat to boxing as an mma fighter. He is a one off once in a lifetime athlete

It's an absolute disgrace. With all due respect to Ngannou, dozens of fighters have been working for years to get into a position to fight as a top contender (there are 18 fighters in the top ten across the 4 different alphabelts). Why isn't AJ fighting Zhang, or Kabayel after his brilliant dismantling of Makhmudov, or the up and coming Frank Sanchez for example? Those guys deserve the shots after many years of dedication, and blood, sweat and tears (and frankly, they're the better fights); as opposed to Ngannou just leapfroging to the top of the pile because of the greed of the boxing business: the promoters and the TV companies. Another plus for the business of boxing and a big fat minus for boxing as a sport.
