Deanna See i spilled water on my macbook and can’t turn it on. the due date will be past by the time it drys out and i probably lost everything . all my hard work was for nothing. i’m actually so sad :(
I’m so sorry to hear that Victoria, that’s awful and you must be so stressed out right now D: how bad was the spill? I knocked a mug of tea on mine before - I turned it upside down, wrapped it with a towel and pointed a fan at it for 24 hours and it’s still holding up. And it’s absolutely not a total waste even if your work didn’t save! The experience will go a long way, whether you decide to try again or really with any work you do involving videos in future. You’ll be okay!
Deanna See You are so sweet! Your words are very reassuring. I appreciate it a lot. The spill wasn’t directly on top of the device, it seeped underneath. I’m glad to hear you experience ended up on the bright side. Hoping mine turns out okay. And you’re so right, I have learned a lot even though i’ve only been at it for 4 days. I’m still going to try submit something. My brother’s letting me use his laptop for a couple hours a day and i was lucky to have a few things saved on my phone. The final product will be rushed an definitely won’t be as good quality as i’d hoped it be but i’m super happy i didn’t give up. i’ll definitely try again next year! thanks :))

Hey Tanushree! Happy to help - I just record indoors with all the fans off haha
From negative experiences with Hitfilm Express that are unfolding right now I would steer clear from it. I spent a few hours editing my BJC project and saved it, only to have the program crash upon opening every time (my laptop is not even bad spec with a Ryzen 5 and 12GB RAM). I will try out Shotcut and DaVinci Resolve and see if they do job better...

Hey Avinash, that sounds like a great topic! I definitely think it is complex enough (and highly relevant to the COVID situation) - just keep in mind that 3 minutes is not a lot of time to go deep into many topics, so focus on a few key points

If you search “green screen” on RUclips you’ll get a lot of examples that you can download and play around on iMovie

Hii, How do i get the green screen. Generally how do i use the green screen to make objects appear
Hi Jennifer, anything with a bright green background can be used as a green screen! Once you click the imovie green screen function it basically erases the green part so it becomes transparent :)
Hii. Please can you give me a suggestion on the animation apps i could use and other apps that could help with my editing.
Hey Jennifer! I actually got the animations from RUclips videos based on RUclips's fair use policy. I'm not exactly sure what Breakthrough's policy on copyright is though (like to what extent we can use outside images etc.) so I recommend using whiteboard drawings/stopmotion/greenscreen to be on the safe side. vllo is a good app, I don't use it personally but have heard good things. Also if you're using an iPhone, iMovie has a mobile version too :)

1. It's entirely possible to edit the video on your phone, some iOS apps you can use are iMovie (comes with iPhone) and VLLO. I don't have experience with Android apps unfortunately.
2. You definitely won't be penalized for using your phone! I recorded all my videos on my phone.
3. Yep you can! An easy way to animate (to increase engagement) is to use stopmotion.

I am participating in the BJC and I want to ask you a question.
Do all animations have to be created by me or can I use ones from movies or so.
Also do you know any site that helps me in making animations cause I have no experience in it.
Heya! You should check if the animations you want to use have a creative commons license (TED Talks for example are copyrighted but have a creative commons license, so we're allowed to use their footage for educational purposes).
Animaker is a good website with pre-made animations, or you can try to animate graphics (from stock sites like Flat Icon) yourself in Powerpoint. I'm really bad at animating so I stick to drawing/doing my own stop-motion animations nowadays.

I remember you using an animation from SpongeBob (I guess) of bacteria multiplying. I also plan to include a couple of footage from a movie related to my topic.
So how do I make sure I don't violate any copy rights?
No worries! That clip I used was on RUclips, so I just followed RUclips's fair use policy: ruclips.net/user/ytabout/copyright/fair-use/
From my understanding, we can use source clips
1. for non-profit educational purposes
2. that are fact-based
3. that form only a small part of the original video (and our use of the clip brings new meaning to it)
4. if it does not harm the owner's ability to profit
You'll just have to mention these references during the Verification Process (the round after Peer-to-Peer)

Hey Rhea! Nah not entering this year, just here to help :) I film mostly indoors because I don't have a mic and it can get really noisy outside. Unless you're doing a lot of outside demonstrations, it's easier to film indoors. But if you have a mic either works just as well :)

Thanks for all of the tips! I have a really weird question though- what if a topic is not actually based on a biological concept or theory? Say for example, I choose basic immunology as a topic for my video (of course the immune system is simple to understand 😂). Might it qualify? ☺ Many thanks!
Immunology is considered biology and life sciences
Though don't speak about it in general search for a breakthrough instead

Hey Grace! In my year, after passing peer-to-peer and the evaluation panel I was set up on a phone call with one of the Breakthrough staff to verify my school, teacher and things like that. That's about it :)
