Having been a Land Navigation (non GPS) instructor, a very well done explanation without getting too deep into the weeds. I will add that with practice, you can actually get the 10m accuracy down to 5 or less meters of precision once you are comfortable with the UTM, or Miiitary Grid Reference System (MGRS).
This is great to hear. I was very new to UTM when I recorded this video. I think the "newbie" context helps communicating the concepts simply. Hopefully, I did not mangle the subject. Do you have a site for your courses?

Thank you...another ham! Honestly, it's one of those skills that I can't imagine ever forgetting. It's so simple. I gave my wife an even simpler explanation and showed her how to find herself on the map. I didn't even explain the units of measure or other details. It's also nice to quickly eyeball the grid just to quickly double check your grid location.

I have a friend and fellow ham in TN and we're planning to run some field expedient commo exercises (and other drills) some time in 2022. Part of the commo plan is to split up, navigate to a remote location, establish comms and exchange field reports. Is this what you are looking for?
If I am not mistaken both USNG and MGRS both use UTM under the hood? Either way, UTM, USNG, MGRS all make more sense for land navigation compared to lat/long. Thanks for the comments!

Maybe it is just because I grew up around boats and my father was in the Navy, but for me "bearing" and "heading" are 2 related but different things, and every Land Nav video i watch uses them interchangeably....or more specifically never uses "heading" and exclusively uses "bearing"

I may do that at 10K. Pulling UTM coordinates from the Garmin is really handy.
I've been using USNG , United States National Grid, basically the same as the Military Grid Reference System
Use the big font numbers to identify the 1k meter grid square...just less numbers to work with
