I read Alvin Ailey's most important solo piece, Cry, was choreographed for Judith Jamison and is dedicated to "all Black women everywhere--especially our mothers." For me, it was the part where she lifted her skirt and marched. That's where it took flight for me.
This monumental Piece danced by Judith Jamison had such an impact on me as a child and student (when I was studying in SERMAC) Judith Jamison became one of my heroes. My Director at the time Jean-Paul Césaire and teacher Jean-Claude Zadith made sure to introduce us to the works of the great Artists and choreographers such as Alvin Ailey. Grateful!!!
I love the generation of cry dancers such as Donna Wood, Deborah Manning, Renee Robinson, Nasha Thomas the late Deborah Chase. I never saw Ms. Jamison perform this work before my time. It seems all the dancers get the hidden gem to move forward with the work.❤
I first saw this dance at Wolf Trap in the mid-1970s, when I was a child with my mother. I think Judith Jamison was dancing it. Suddenly, a woman in the audience got up and screamed. I was so young, at the time, I wondered why she did that, and I asked Mom. Now, of course, I realize why she was so moved. Then, about a decade later, I saw, I think, Donna Wood dance this in NYC. I may be recalling this wrong, but from my recollection, Judith was in the wings, dancing along, and I think she came out for the final moments and danced in her muumuu alongside Donna. It was very exciting.
I actually have the DVD of this performance. Glad I purchased it years ago. The price is jacked up so high now. And I have to say, Deborah Manning is the best performing this piece. I've see Judith Jamison, Donna Wood and other dancers perform it. But Ms. Manning has it down!!!
@@davidawilliams8603 Yes, Ms. Jamison is the first to perform the piece. But Deborah stole my heart with her moves. I am still today. reference her performance when I see it.
I think the way I would described each act would be as follows: Act 1: Bound but Proud and Dignified, Act 2: Unbound and Recapturing that which has been compromised and Act 3: Liberated Elevate and Free. I think the only other performance that elevates me like Cry is Leontyne’s final performance in Aida at the Met.
Great to see different interpretations of this, I think Debra Manning is most solid technically, but I wish she'd let it go more, so for me, Donna Wood is my favorite.
I agree it's an absolutely vile practice that RUclips has adapted in an effort to blackmail watchers into paying for relief from their continued relentless harassment. They have no shame, no respect for the people who help to keep them viable they need to be called out for their behavior. They have become the definition of evil by causing unnecessary spikes in anger, frustration, and blood pressure that undoubtedly have an adverse impact upon innumerable people. As if they needed more of our money its not enough that they have hijacked our information in the most vile of means and manipulated our minds with algorithms that are anything but just and logical.
It is also worth noting that I make no money on any of these videos. This site was demonetized a long time ago. The only people making money are Google and the copyright holders. Be assured that the artists get nothing. They could address this issue also by donating to the many struggling arts programs throughout the world.
I wonder will there ever be a male allowed to do this piece. There was a male allowed to do the lead in Judith Jamison's Divining. I would have loved to see it.
Probably not, although I agree that would look amazing. I only say this because Ailey made this piece as an homage to black women, specifically his mother. Having a man dance this piece would take away from his original intent.
I pray that they don't allow a male to perform this piece like I wouldn't want to see 3 women doing the Sinnerman section. In other words everything has its place. Period.
I agree with the two replies, I’ve recently been studying Alvin Ailey, specifically revelations and all of his pieces have their place. A white dancer actually left as he wouldn’t allow her to have the cry solo, saying that he favoured black women, when in actuality, she’d had the lead on every other dance in the company at one stage, that was the only dance she wasn’t allowed to do. This piece has its meaning and it’s heritage and to take the meaning away, by letting a male or a white woman on it would not only disrespect Ailey, but his mother and the African-American women around the world
I believe his autobiography, Ailey said he would never let any one other than a Black woman perform "Cry." "Dedicated to 'all black women everywhere-especially our mothers,' this iconic solo was created by Alvin Ailey as a birthday present to his own mother."
...this was filmed for west German television...after ailey's death...Judith Jameson is in charge of the company at the time of this filming...Donna woods is gone and ...Deborah Manning is the third dancer to dance...cry...the year is...perhaps...1991,92,93..
Sidney Johnson Judith retired a few years ago. Robert Battle is the director now. He has modernized a lot of the pieces. They are nice, but don’t have the same feel of the original.
@@kikibrown9548 ki ki I know that battle is in charge of the company now but at the time of the filming Judith Jameson was in charge of the company and the dancers in the film is Deborah Manning, who is, at that time, the time of the filming the third person to dance "cry"

Simply put, "A Pillar of American Art." Cry always makes me, well, cry.

This dancer is very good, but Judith Jamison killed this.
Maravillosa!!! No me canso de verla, más la veo, más la quiero ver. Una artista a 360° grados, me alimenta el alma

Agreed!!! Amazing
still looking for the Judith j Jamison performing of this song
I also thought Linda Sims' performance at the white house was phenomenal.

I saw Judith Jamison do this role back in the day .
No body did this piece as fierce as Deborah Manning. Not even Judith.

Beautiful :)💖💖💖
That woman is magnificent. ❤
Deborah strength, lines, is everything. I saw none of the sort when Judith did this piece.
I like the costumes. The men were dressed appropriate and all the women wore long skirts and not touching each other.
Powerful !!!

this lacks SOUL
Please explain before making such a statement
You clearly don’t know dance!! You clearly don’t know THE BEST TO EVER DO THIS SOLO..... As Desmond Richardson would call her “MANICOVA!”
Согласна!Для меня тоже нет души женщины...она разрушительный образ...
Really what are you viewing?
I cant feel her, too technical, no history, no jiggle/jive in her moves, shes good..... but? 🤔
