- Journey to the unknown Ko'olau ridge is an adventure for the books. This is not your every day hiking trip. Climbing Lanihuli peak, can be a fun adventure, but most of the routes leading to it are pretty dangerous. Maybe not the one through Kapalama trail. Climbing Lanihuli through Mo'ole Ridge is not the most technical, but is the hardest way in my opinion.
It needed some preparations, some planning, involved clearing some parts of the trail, studying topographic maps and of course some serious bushwhacking.
This route was partially done by HTMC members back in the 90's and some other hiking groups too. Most of the groups only went up to the first spur ridge to the top of the pu'u on the main ridge, and one group made it to the second pu'u (hill top) where instead of dropping 40 ft down, they bailed down in Mo'ole Valley.
Our challenge today was to make it all the way to Lanihuli!
Maybe we will be the 1st ones who can finish this route? Who knows.
Follow our journey, and find out if we make it up to the the 2700ft high peak in the Ko'olau Mountains!

Nice one! I climbed Lanihuli from Pali Puka and wasn't really sure which ridge to take done. Luckily we didn't try to go down this ridge but took the Kapalama tail 😂
One crazy ridge a day is enough.

What are some items you carry with you when doing a new hiking route?
kona_popcorn Great choice! I use my Gaia Topo App for offline routefinding, works well. Only downside is on my phone, so I have to use it smart.
